AT&T’s MMS carrier settings update now available via iTunes; MMS now working on iPhone 3G, 3GS

AT&T’s MMS carrier settings update is now available via iTunes for Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS models.

To check if a carrier settings update is available for your iPhone:
1. Make sure you have a working Internet connection on your computer and you have iTunes 7.7 or later.
2. Connect iPhone to the computer and open iTunes.
3. Click “Update Settings.”
4. Restart your iPhone:
   – Hold the power button until “slide to power off” appears.
   – Slide to power off your device.
   – When it is off, press the power button to turn it back on.

MacDailyNews Note: On your iPhone, in Settings > MMS Messaging, make sure the slider in “ON. Carrier settings version should be AT&T 5.5.

In your iPhone’s “Messages” app, you’ll now see a camera icon next to the text input field that will allow you to take or use an existing photo or video to send via MMS:

Now let’s all go decimate AT&T’s network!

  1. Network issues will exist for a while (days?) while everyone plays around with this. Then I suspect it will finally progress to the “barely useful” stage when only a few users are trying it out. Finally, after everyone gives up on it, it will eventually work.

    Love iPhone, Hate ATT…

  2. It’s working for me.
I’ve had a 50/50 experience with ATT customer service. Half good – half bad. The bad – Got attitude from the rep and her supervisor when I questioned text charges that originated in Ontario. I was in Washington, near the Canadian border but still in Washington. The distance of approximately Seattle to Chicago. Attitude for 8 bucks. It was as though it came out of their paycheck. Sheesh.

The good – A rep reduced my bill substantially when I actually was in Canada because I had forgotten the exorbitant roaming charges.

  3. Soo ATT…. brag about “unlimited data” and then brag aboutv offering MMS today.
I just got a message from ATT warning that if you don’t have a messaging plan each MMS will cost 30 cents. iPhone needs to be on additional networks.

  4. It isn’t working for me either, Whatever4real. I can receive them but can’t send them, I get the red exclamation like you said. I think they are just ironing out the network as my buddy in Florida sent me a message and his MMS feature is working fine.

  5. Does the size of the file determine how many texts are charged against the account? More than 160 characters and you’re charged for 2 messages. Just curious if the same applies to MMS.

  6. The ONLY way to ‘beat the system’ is to have Ublimited Text and Data (Internet) plans on your iPhone. ZERO $$ for Unlimited text and data and Internet (after the cost of the plans of course)

  7. MMS hasn’t worked all day, not even once, and still isn’t working late in the evening here in the Pacific Northwest. That’s after installing the latest carrier update and rebooting a iPhone 3G OS 3.1. Seems like more than a heavy system overload. It simply doesn’t work.

  8. MMS has worked fine in Portland, OR / Vancouver, WA metro area all day. Have only had one/two MMS Messages get the Red Explainition Marks which indicate the messages did not Send.
Waited a few minutes and hit ReSend and they went just fine…

  9. Disaster here in DC

Long time iPhone user, and I am finally converting to the BB Storm … the AT&T;network is awful in large population centers where the iPhone density is greatest … I am GONE BABY GONE from the iPhone after standing in line for 2 hours when the original came out

    Goodbye Apple and AT&T;
