Apple special event coming soon?

“Apple has on many occasions uncrated new products on the heels of Macworld,” John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD.

“In February of 2008, the company announced new iPhone and iPod touch models,” Paczkowski reports. “In February of 2006 it debuted the Intel Mac mini and iPod Hi-Fi. In January 2005 it uncrated new PowerBooks and a month later, it announced a new iPod mini and an update to iPod photo.”

Paczkowski reports, “Clearly there’s quite a precedent for post-Macworld announcements, and in all likelihood this year will see a few as well.”

  1. apple is not nostalgic. one of the first things steve jobs did when returning to apple was sending all the old computers and prototypes to stanford. so, no announcement around jan. 24th, i bet.

and apple will or will have not a special event soon? it really amazes with how little these “writers” nowadays get away with.

  2. @ fergman –

Yes, we will. I have been waiting for my sprint contract to expire, now that it has ( 1 year and 3 months after the iPhone debut ) I can finally pick up an iPhone – seriously, my contract expires tomorrow.

However, I once again am going to be waiting, because I have to believe another version of the iPhone is right around the corner…

Sorry, but what is a “iPod mini???”

The announcements after MWSF, thus far, have not been earth shattering. The closest we come to that being the case is the iPod Hi-Fi, but Apple pulled out of the peripheral market due to it sending too much fear into accessory vendors (it was not due to sales – it sold nearly as well as the Bose Dock, yet ran $50 – $100 more).

Apple cannot pre-announce an iPhone nano, or it will hurt existing iPhone sales. Apple cannot pre-announce a new large-screen iPod touch, or it will dent existing iPod touch sales.

In short, if Apple announces something in the next few months:
    A. If adding to, or replacing an existing product, it must launch it soon after the event.
    B. If entering an entirely new category of product (i.e. home server market), then Apple can announce, and ship several months out, as it will only boost media attention, build up demand, and slow competitive products (HP, etc…) that are selling now.

  4. To hell with waiting, if you need the hardware today, just buy it and enjoy. I upgraded my iPhone last month and I am quite happy with it enjoying the heck out of it TODAY. Sure, they could announce one tomorrow, but does it really matter that much. 8 GB of space is plenty for my needs and in the end is all perception. You only get a good deal if you THINK you got a good deal.

  5. Geologically speaking, the next Apple event will be VERY soon. Also geologically speaking, SJ will retire soon after. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  6. I don’t know why one of these Brainiacs doesn’t go back and graph all the Apple product announcements over the last three years.

If this transition away from MacWorld has been in the works as long as Apple usually does things, there should be a clear pattern of when Apple would *prefer* to announce their products. Thsu we could easily have some idea of when Apple will announce new products in the future.

Tech bloggers have it easy, they do less work than I do on any given day and get all the benefits of having all the cool toys. They are mostly spoiled lazy, rotten ….

Kids today, … I tells ya … (shakes fist in the air)

  7. Tommyr wrote,”I’m not believing ANYTHING until they actually announce stuff.”

…and I’m not buying anything until Apple actually produces a Mac mini with Intel’s Core i7 or an iMac with Intel’s Core i7 and a minimum 24-inch LED monitor.

  8. While I appreciate the attempt to bump the stock price, saying Apple may release a new product soon is like say Steve Ballmer may overpower his antiperspirant soon….you know it’s going to happen, you just don’t know when.

  9. I’m with those who say “how do you define ‘SOON’?”. Maybe because I’m “old” and don’t require it to mean “by tomorrow”, maybe that means it will actually be “soon” … for me. I’m in no real hurry. But I’d LOVE a Quad-Core powered iMac! OK, so it would be the “top of the line” … not a problem. Co-announced with Snow Leopard? Sure, I can wait ’til summer. My son, who will inherit my Dual G5 (to replace his inherited G4) may be a bit more eager. My grandson, who will inherit the G4, doesn’t even know it’s coming. How many gens of PCs could you pass down the line?

  10. Apple pulled out of Macworld because they said it was a bad time of year for them, they won’t be releasing anything new via major events in the next 2 months.

Small speed bumps with a press release perhaps, but nothing more.
