“iPhone’s 2.1 update last Friday was supposed to fix a whole dump truck-load of issues people have been having with the iPhone 3G,” Jason Chen reports for Gizmodo. “Did the 2.1 firmware do everything it promised? Oh yes.”
Chen notes positive improvements in the following areas:
• Reception
• Battery Life
• Reduced Backup Time
• Application Install
• Crashing and hanging apps
• Text messaging
Chen reports, ” Apple’s really fixed the glaring reception, crashing and backup problems everyone’s been seeing. Not only is everyone getting more bars than they were before, they’re getting actual results… Apple has finally put most of the iPhone 3G launch problems behind it.”

“My iPhone 3G still refuses to wake from sleep about once a week, requiring a hard reboot.”
How can this be, the update has been out no longer then 4 days? It is ether happening a lot more frequently then a week, or you need to complete reset your iPhone.
The 2.1 update seems to fix all my issues. I stopped adding apps because I would have to do a complete restore every time due to apps not starting. The restore would take hours and then still not complete. After stalling at ~95% for a couple of hours, I would have to stop it and them do a sync (another hour or more) and then would still have to reset some settings like ringtone assignments plus re-arrange apps on appropriate screens. This was the first Apple product I wanted to send back and recommend against.
Now, with 2.1, I have not had to restore at all and syncing only takes a minute or two. I never had problems with the receptions and battery life was not an issue since I had access to a charger wherever I was–work office and home office had connection to computer, car has charger, and couch has a plug next to it that we use for my wife’s cell phone and her Macbook. No problems.
Plus iTunes 8.0 seems to have fixed the wacky update problem.
I am now a happy Apple fanboi again!
i’m still having call dropped and call failed issues. I’m on a 2g unlocked iphone, and ever since 2.0 all my calls have dropped and gone straight to voicemail. now the problem is much worse with about 75% of my incoming calls going to voicemail and my calls failing. also my reception bar goes down to zero after a while, and sometimes i get no service a few minutes after i had full bars when a call fails.
not sure if its a hardware issue but it got way worse after 2.1
Apple seems to have found the one way to make Safari crashes more irritating. It was once a plus that the system would quickly return to the homescreen and allow me to continue on about my business. Now when Safari crashes, it hangs for several seconds (screen black except for the status bar) and then I finally get back to the homescreen. Often I’ll have to hold the home button and reset Safari in the midst of the crash itself! It sucks so bad.

They repealed the Glass-Steagall Act.

And their greed did the rest.
The Glass-Steagall Act should be reinstated and they would not be able to do the BS that they did that led to the mortgage meltdown.
My GPS still doesn’t work most of the time when 3G is turned on and even not all of the time when Edge is on.
Most of the problem I have been having are gone, but for SMS still crash just after it loads and not I can’t listen to my audiobook as this app crashes on opening on both my iphone and touch.
Any had same problem or know a fix
Thanks
After the update, my SIM-less iPhone is still in emergency call only mode. This happens after every update, but after a while becomes fully working iPhone minus the phone. Does anyone know a quick way to make it functional after the update, without resorting to cracks?
It’s the funnest update ever!
“Report: Apple’s iPhone 2.1 Software fixes pretty much everything”
Oh, if only it could – our economy, our culture, our government, businesses, activist groups… those could all use fixing!
Ah well, maybe the iPhone 2.2 software update will sort those out…
*waits for this post to spawn the usual off-topic political/financial commentary*

Email fetching is now broken for me after the 2.1 update. It worked great in the other 2.0 firmwares, but now it consistently does not fetch my mail every 15 minutes even though I set it to. Others are having the same problem on the Apple discussion boards.
I updated my 3Gg to 2.1 with great results and this morning got a brief screen message from AT&T;stating I needed to go to my iTunes software and update the AT&T;contribution to the 2.1 update. That screen message did not save so cannot recall it but I tried the iTunes again for an update and was informed I had received all due to me at this date.
Anyone else had a note like this?
I came to to post about how I still can’t get Safari to stop crashing on me–I didn’t even get through the first sentence!
Safari is as unstable as ever, and I still get system-wide lag. The lag may be the result of a Winterboard element that I have installed, so that may not be Apple’s fault, but the instability is a real pain in the ass!
Safari still crashes. It crashes a lot.
I had a nice long post typed out on my iPhone as a response to this article, and before I could submit, it crashed. Three times.
Oh, look at that. One of my iPhone posts actually got through. I had no way of knowing that from my iPhone. Grrrr…
