Apple iPhone, iPod touch emerge as popular gaming devices

“It’s already a groundbreaking phone and digital music player, and now Apple’s iPhone [and iPod touch are] emerging as a popular gaming device[s] as well. Of the 1,300 add-on programs currently available for [them], about a quarter are games — as are seven of the 10 most popular selections in the Apple App Store, which opened on July 11. That kind of demand, along with plans for more and better offerings, could launch the iPhone [and iPod touch] into a whole new stratosphere of mobile gaming,” Anita Hamilton reports for Time Magazine.

“The cell-phone gaming market is ripe for the picking. While millions of people play games on the portable Nintendo DS and Sony PSP every day, fewer than 10% of cell-phone users in the U.S. do the same on their phones, according to Nielsen Mobile. What’s more, the average cell-phone gamer spends just $8 a year on new games, versus an estimated $45 a year for users of the PSP and $65 yearly for DS players. The iPhone [and iPod touch] — with [their] gorgeous touchscreens, wireless delivery of applications and hundreds of entertainment titles — [are] poised to bridge that gap. The Gartner Group research firm projects that iPhone games will help propel cell-phone gaming revenues in the U.S. from $845 million in 2008 to $1.2 billion in 2011,” Hamilton reports.

  1. Apple first needs to work out how to actually deliver on what it has promised. They are impossible to get in white here in Spain and near impossible in black… those that do get one are treated to cracks and buggy software. Apple is a small company that needs to learn how to ship large quantities properly, with proper quality control if they want to play in the big league… Otherwise all that carefull image making will be for nothing.

  2. John, John, John, less of the patronisation please. Apple a small company? Well that simply depends on who you compare them too doesn’t it or indeed how you quantify size, (I can imagine how you do it).

As for quality control from my own, and from the information and stats widely available (and agreed there are always low points and room to improve), quality control of its computer products are simply unmatched and certainly only Lenovo is even close. 20 years with 3 Macs and only 3 days down time and not a penny on IT or phone support so far, is pretty good quality control in my book, but then I don’t read much fiction… nor fantasy. On the other hand I have just had to throw out an HP printer after 18 months light use.

  3. @spyinthe sky:

I agree with you. No major problems with my apple products. In fact, just to give a simple illustration. I had an eMac couple of years ago. I bought it for my daughter. When I upgraded her to her 20″ iMac, she gave the eMac to her friends. Prior to giving to her friends, I had the video card fixed by Apple for free–even though the warranty ran out and the recall expired by more than a week. I uploaded with 10.4 and passed it along. To this day, the eMac still works.

  4. To John:

It’s a myth that Apple are a small company and that they don’t know how to ship quantities. They are valued on the stock market higher than Dell and they have been shipping tens of millions of iPods each quarter!

  5. Yup. Me too MegaMe.

I have others that I want to buy too, but I told myself that I would master the ones that I’ve already downloaded first, before I spend anymore money.

If not for just a little bit of discipline, I could easily see myself dropping a few hundred on games alone. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  6. If Apple comes out with a $199 iPod touch, this really will be a bloodbath for Nintendo DS and PSP. Everyone thinks Apple has no traction here, but with people like John Carmack getting excited about the iPhone, I think we are in for a sea change.

Portable gaming that includes wifi, internet, email, messaging, movies, iTunes AND most of the games will be under $20 as opposed to $30 to $40.

BTW, note that the App store started with 500 title, then last week it was 1000 titles and now it is 1300 titles?

    Wow.

  7. I always felt that Apple sold quality products but the last two products I purchased either broke or had to be returned. I bought touch that had a defective screen and my year and a half year old shuffle quite working. Also, my MacBook has a few cracks in the case. I still love the products but they are hardly perfect.

  8. As another one irked by the “small company” remark, I felt the strong urge to add here that Apple has been in the top 25 companies by market cap for quite some time now. The companies above Apple on this list are mostly big Oil (Exxon-Mobile, Total SpA, etc), and tech giants such as Microsoft, IBM and Google. Among computer hardware makers, Apple is by far the largest, well past HP, Dell and others. Not to mention bigger than JP Morgan Chase, Pfizer, Glaxo-SmithKline, Coca-Cola, Intel…

If Spain has shortage, it’s their carrier (Telefonica?). They might have it in San Sebastian, or Gijon, or someplace smaller…

Sorry, but I’m a stickler for grammar. It should be:

It are a myth that Apple are a small company and that they doesn’t know how to ship quantities.

  10. Apple are a small player in the mobile phone market and computer markets. Others ship far greater volumes than them. Nokia for instance.

The evidence is clear for all too see: Apple cannot supply enough iPhones to meet demand. They didnt make anywhere near enough. Try walking into a store in most of Europe and walking out with an iPhone, its very very hard, and this is three weeks after launch.

Lets face it. Apple talks the talk but canot walk the walk. Stand and deliver.

  11. John,

“Try walking into a store in most of Europe and walking out with an iPhone, its very very hard, and this is three weeks after launch.”

I’ll sure give it a try if you’ll pay for the transportation, food and lodging (all first class, of course). We got a deal?

  12. Random note:

I just saw my first Zune in the wild! A medical assistant here bought it over the weekend. She didn’t buy an iPod because the store clerk said no iPod had enough storage space to fit a movie on it. So, she basically bought the Zune because this guy convinced her it would be the only way she could watch a movie on the go.

She also had no idea who made it. There is no Micro$ucks logo on it or in the software.

  13. Two iPhones since last Tuesday, both killed by 3rd party apps! Apple has major issues with this 2.0 beta iPhone software which should have been tested before being released. iPhone…can u say iBrick…iJunk…iTrash…iRefund, and move back to Blackberry for business. Apple makes nice toys, but when you need a phone that’s essential to your life, you gotta get what works! Sorry Apple as much as I’m a fan of your company stay out of the phone biz til you get your product past the beta stage!!!!!

  14. “… but when you need a phone that’s essential to your life …”

Sounds like someone made a very stupid decision. They bought one of Apple’s toys to replace their business capable BlackBerry. Guess you need to learn to think these things out a little better.
