MobileMess weighs on Apple shares

“MobileMe is Apple’s foray into so-called ‘cloud computing’ in which information stored on a computer server, or cloud, can be updated via any device linked to the cloud. Once one device is used to update information, then all devices connected directly or wirelessly to the cloud are updated. It’s one of the company’s main initiatives to expand the reach of its 3G iPhone,” Rex Crum reports for MarketWatch.

“The MobileMe service includes email, a calendar and contacts, Web-based photo galleries and 20 gigabytes of storage, and works with both Apple’s Macintosh PCs and Windows-based PCs, along with the iPhone and iPod Touch,” Crum reports.

“Apple launched MobileMe the same day it rolled out the new iPhone, and almost immediately, the company became deluged with complaints about service disruptions and lost emails as Apple transferred members of its older .Mac service to MobileMe and added new iPhone customers to the service,” Crum reports.

“Analysts that follow Apple say the MobileMe issue is important because since the company is putting so much on the line with the iPhone, it needs to show it can offer a consistent, reliable service for consumers that want mobile access to all of their important data,” Crum reports.

“Shiv Bakhshi of IDC said that Apple is experiencing some of the growing pains that are common when a company first enters a business segment,” Crum reports. “‘Apple isn’t used to the mobile-platform market, so this is new to them,’ he added. ‘They may have underestimated the scale and pressure of that new customer base.'”

MacDailyNews Note: In afternoon trading, Apple shares are currently down $6.61, or 4.08%, to $155.51. If this drop is due to MobileMe, then investors obviously do not fully understand the situation and are overreacting. It would hardly be the first time. iPhone 3G does not require MobileMe at all. In fact, the vast majority of iPhone owners most likely do not even know what MobileMe is, much less subscribe to it.

That said, MobileMe is working for us (always has been since the initial first day or two traffic deluge dissipated) and, when coupled with Macs and iPhones, has already become an indispensable service for us.

  1. MobileMe is not syncing my contacts, calendars, or email to my iphone. It is syncing with my computers. I’ve been to the genuis bar, no luck, currently I’m awaiting a chat with someone at mobleme support.

Having said that, I just bought another 10 shares of apple.

Chatting with Mobile me support now, I’ll report back

  2. “Investors are reacting to the incompetence that has taken place since the 3G launch.”
Proof please. Cite specific references from brokers.

“Steve Jobs was clearly not running these events. “
Proof please. Explain how you know this for sure.

“He IS sicker than being revealed.”
Please cite your sources for this info.

“There is reason to be concerned about Apple, Inc right now. The company. And their arrogance.”
How about I buy you a hot cup of STFU.

  3. ok.. so there’s an hour and a half I won’t get back.

So the rep comes back on the line, tells me that they created a test account for me to use, gives me the account and password, AND BEFORE I CAN COPY IT DOWN TERMINATES THE SESSION!

Of course, I go straight back to the mobileme support page to log back into chat AND…….. it is DOWN AGAIN.

I’m going to the fridge to get a beer.

Steve – I know you read MDN. Light a fire under them brother. If we could get just a little help, just a little.

  4. MobileMe syncing is definitely experiencing growing pains. Syncing for Contacts/Calendars was down for most of this afternoon. However, it’s now back up and working perfectly among my three Macs and iPhone.

  5. Arnold Ziffel and Jamie. You two must love this MDN site.

Blind to reality, just as this site is. Your belief that Apple can do no wrong is a joke.

You are two pathetic and hateful people. Enjoy your fantasy lives.

  6. Chill Mozart. You’re in that 1%. it will be fixed soon. 99% of us are having no problems at all. Works as advertised. Being in that 1% must suck, and I feel bad for you, they’ll soon fix it and you’ll be very happy. But for now, i do feel bad for you.

  7. garymac I’m fine. It’s the others that felt the need to attack me personally for no reason.

Being anonymous behind a computer on the internet makes some people feel so smart I guess.

Apple has some serious technical trouble on their hands. And for people to deny it is foolish. Investors have not denied these troubles.

Sure Apple will get them fixed. But it’s coming up on three weeks. And if this was Microsoft, those that attack me personally, would be all over this site posting ridiculing comments of Microsoft. But Apple’s s**t doesn’t stink to some. Even to the MDN site.

Apple has had to backtrack on it’s claims of “exchange for the rest of us”. True “push” etc…

I call it like it is. But if all that has occurred to Apple since July 11th was Microsoft or Dell? Apple has joined that club to a degree. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.a

  8. “may have underestimated the scale and pressure of that new customer base”

That would be a non fanboy base who complain when things go wrong and don’t like losing email as opposed to a user base who get shafted yet continue to post how wonderful Apple is.

Truly having to provide good customer service, rather than just dealing with people who will pretend they are completely happy no matter how badly they are treated must be tough for Apple.

  9. “Apple has had to backtrack on it’s claims of “exchange for the rest of us”. True “push” etc…”

Unless they have rocks in their heads, no-one who relies on email is going to trust MobileMess for some time. This is no RIM killer people, it’s a killer of Apple’s reputation.
