Inquirer tech writer switches to Apple Mac: ‘Fed up with the absolute turd that is Windows Vista’

“Hell has finally frozen over,” Dean Pullen reports for The Inquirer. “This INQ hack has gone Mac. I’m now using a Macbook full-time and expect to be using a Macbook Pro when the (likely) August refresh occurs. I’m also buying a 3G Iphone in July.”

“I’m simply fed up. I’m fed up with the absolute turd that is Windows Vista,” Pullen explains.

Pullen reports, “Don’t get me wrong, I hate a lot of what Apple stands for. Fanboys bordering on zealotry is one major reason I’ve wanted to avoid Macs for a long time.”

MacDailyNews Take: Yes, by all means, always base your decisions on what other people say and do.

Pullen continues, “I like Steve Jobs as about much as Steve Balmer. Not a lot.”

MacDailyNews Take: Dude, you’re a “fanboy” already, whether you know it or not and Steve Ballmer isn’t fit to carry Steve Job’s sandals. Much of what constitutes the “tech” world today is due to Steve Jobs. From the GUI to Multi-Touch™.

Pullen continues, “I admit, I love an OS full of eye-candy. Why, in 2008, should I be looking at low-res icons and opaque windows? I pay good money for a decent CPU and graphics card, I expect the underlying software to utilise it. OSX does. OSX is also ‘nix based, being built from Nextstep, which was originally based on BSD, which most ‘nix advocates will tell you is ‘a good thing.'”

“I like the no-fuss OS, the bells and whistles, and the ability to work for longer than ten minutes without my disk rotating at maximum velocity for an eternity,” Pullen explains.

Pullen asks, “If (alleged) IT professionals, like myself, start making the switch and bemoaning the state of Microsoft’s offerings, how long before the masses take heed?”

MacDailyNews Take: It’s already happening, Dean.

Pullen plows on, “How long will it be before Microsoft’s market share starts to falter at the burgeoning up-take of hassle-free operating systems and devices?”

MacDailyNews Take: Dean, that’s already been happening for some time, too. Where’ve you been?

  1. OSX is more than eye candy Dean, it’s an OS that is fast, secure, and stable. It does what you want, and it doesn’t get in your face every time you open an app or file. You call us fanboys, no were not. We just know which platform works better for us the users. Something that you Windows fanboys couldn’t understand, but are starting to, finally.

  2. Pullen continues, “I like Steve Jobs as about much as Steve Balmer. Not a lot.”

Here’s a few more MDN slogans,

“Get a Mac, become a cretin.”

“Possess a Mac, lose your individuality.”

“Gain a Mac, lose your mind.”

    “Own a Mac, disown intelligence,”

“Fanbois can’t breed, they can only recruit.”

  3. “OSX is also ‘nix based, being built from Nextstep, which was originally based on BSD, which most ‘nix advocates will tell you is ‘a good thing.'”

What an absolute amateur. Is this is big revelation to you like you make it sound?

  4. @ha ha ha
For someone who hates all that is Apple you really love spending time here. You should stop being such a hater and join a MS forum. Better yet try losing weight, getting out of the basement who knows you might like the sunshine, you might even get laid! (someone other than your drunk uncle)

  5. Fanboys bordering on zealotry is one major reason I’ve wanted to avoid Macs for a long time.

    Zealotry?

One has to ask HOW DID WE GET SO ZEALOUS?

He will see the light of the holy Steve Jobs and his vision of the future very shortly!

Much like people will realize that McCain is America’s best choice for president. Served his country, tourtured in ‘nam, Loves America!

  6. “Why, in 2008, should I be looking at low-res icons and opaque windows?”

wait, doesn’t Vista have all the GUI bells and whistles? wasn’t that the point of the Aero interface? that statement only makes sense if you moved to Mac OS from Win XP.

  7. I hate the whole fan boy thing. People snidely insinuate that Apple somehow attracts weak minded disciples who blindly buy anything Apple. When the truth is that Apple has earned loyal customers by consistently providing a superior consumer experience.

The best customer a company can hope for is one who is loyal to the brand and actively encourages others to use that brand. Guess what Dean Pullen? Your article makes it clear that you’re doing both of those things. You’re a fanboy.

  8. He has a point. Besides the one on top of his head, I mean. Most of the Mac users he has had contact with have been the freaking zealots that have flamed him every time he has said something anti-Mac – even slightly so. There are ten Windows users out there for every Mac user and they are less offensive – take that any way you want – when “their OS” gets dinged. Of course, they have less to be defensive about, WE know that, but mainly it’s that they just don’t care!
And, he didn’t say anything about XP, he said Vista was a turd.

  9. Isn’t it just as easy to type “Unix” vs. “‘nix”?

“nix” came about because of the trademark of the “Unix” name and code.

So when developers made versions of Unix but were not certified “Unix” they referred to them as “*nix” which later became “nix”.

    So “nix” means Unix like.

    Read Slashdot.com more often.

  10. Actually, I’m just as productive with OS X as I am with XP. It’s all a matter of learning how to use the software.

    Your not more productive!

How can you be more productive when your dedicating a whole processor core to anti-malware software?

I made the mistake of using a Dell PC with XP (SP2) and anti-virus software running all the time to rip a friends 200 cd collection in iTunes (which gets the cd tracks over the internet so I couldn’t just unhook the internet and turn off the anti-virus software.)

So I transfered all this music to my laptop, to catagorize it as I listen to it.

The rips were absolutely horrible and now I’m spending all my time re-ripping the music on my Mac like I should have done in the first place!

    All that time wasted!!

There are two approaches in life, you can go cheap and fight with your product to make it work or you can spend slightly more and reap “It just works!”

    Mac’s work and Microsoft PC’s don’t.
