Microsoft: Windows Mobile will grab 40% market share in 2012

“Microsoft expects sales of its Windows Mobile platform products will account for 40% of the global smartphone market in fiscal 2012 (July 2011-June 2012), according to Eddie Wu, managing director of Microsoft ODM embedded devices, Asia,” Daniel Shen and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes.

“Microsoft currently focuses its efforts on promoting the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system and the company has no plans to launch Windows Mobile 7 until 2009, Wu stated,” Shen and Shen report.

Good God, they must be giving them hallucinogens now!

Microsoft’s sales of its Windows Mobile platform products will account for 40% of the global smartphone market the day they exclude Apple (and all other non-Microsoft) products from the definition of “smartphone market.” And not a day sooner.

[UPDATE: 5:06pm EDT: Added “(and all other non-Microsoft)” to Take. Thanks, Predrag.]

  1. MS 40 % of Smartphone market: Even though iPhone isn’t available in Greenland, I think Nokia is selling phones, operator (At&T;/O2…) are selling networks, Symbian are selling the OS.
But the only company making a SMART combination of them is Apple -hence Apple is the only SMARTPHONE maker -right ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  2. In related news, Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Inc., was admitted to an emergency ward with severe bruising and a concussion. Reportedly, he read a quote by a certain Eddie Wu (who?) and had to laugh so hard, he fell off his chair.

  3. As usual, the problem is bad reporting.
What was really said was, “Microsoft Windows Mobile will have 40% of it’s current market share.”

That is to say, it will only be 40% of what it is today.

  4. This reminds of the MS claim about how the Xbox has outsold Wii and PSx in total units. MS forgot to mention that they had the 360 on the market for quite a while before the competition. So today when the NPD April figures came out, I looked to see:
      Wii – 714.2K
      Nintendo DS – 414.8K
      PSP – 192.7K
      PlayStation 3 – 187.1K
      Xbox 360 – 188.0K
      PlayStation 2 – 124.4K

Looks like a real “winner” from MS once again. Hey, they managed to beat the PS2 – what a feat!

What’s that? Oh, the sound of chairs flying in Redmond…

  5. Seems that MS sell a lot more 360s than Apple sell AppleTVs. It’s time for Apple to give the last rights to that product.

How does a game deck compare to a media box? Because they plug into a TV?

Next we’re gonna compare cars to tractors because they both have wheels. Different products, different markets.
