“ClimateCounts.org aims to force companies to clearly state their environmental efforts and provide this information to customers as a tool that contributes to their purchase decision. “Business is being pushed by consumers to do its part to solve the climate crisis. The scorecard allows consumers to make good climate decisions in their everyday purchases, and it’s having an impact,” said Gary Hirshberg, ClimateCounts.org chairman. Hirshberg is also the CEO of organic yogurt maker Stonyfield Farm, which finances the campaign,” Christian Zibreg and Wolfgang Gruener report for TG Daily.
“At least in this survey, Apple doesn’t look great. The Cupertino-based company ended up with only 11 out of a maximum of 100 points for its ecological and climate efforts. Apple’s results fall far behind other tech companies: IBM is at the top with 77 points, followed by Canon (74), Toshiba (70), Sony (68), Hewlett-Packard (68), Motorola (66), Hitachi (51), Samsung (51), Siemens (51), Dell (49) and Nokia (37). ClimateCounts.org claims that Apple has no publicly stated climate impact review information available, there are insufficient efforts to reduce the climate impact, there is no climate policy stance and very little reporting on its emissions available,” Zibreg and Gruener report.
Full article here.
MacDailyNews Note: More about Apple’s environmental efforts here.
God will solve ‘Climate thingy’. We should be more focused on the “Morals Crisis”.
Maybe Algore and Slick Willy could help in that area.
Who appointed these turkeys environmental judges and juries? Enough of this pseudo-science. Please don’t give these self-appointed nannies a platform.
This is all about grabbing headlines of a phony ECO organization looking to cash in from the public.
Man caused Global Warning in a load of Crap anyway. Any scientist that has reviewed the data and does have a BIG GRANT pending on Global Warming research will tell that it’s crap too.
Notice what they are talking about here? “Publicly stated” goals. Many companies have been promising the sun the moon and the stars. What they’ve been delivering is quite different.
Rating a company on their promises is less than helpful. It encourages big press announcements, nothing more. If countries were rated for their “publicly stated” goals concerning democratization I’m guessing China would come in first and the United States and other established democracies would come in last.
I’m all for encouraging environmentalism. But I’m all for USEFUL measures, not measures that distort and conceal the truth.
Missed the word NOT
Any scientist that has reviewed the data and does NOT have a BIG GRANT pending on Global Warming research will tell that it’s crap too.
Just a load of BS! Do the math. With current technology, only nuclear power works as a way to reduce emissions deemed harmful. Nuclear power reduces dependancy on outside sources of fuel, provides jobs, saves lives.
Sorry, I take that back about god solving our problems. I shouldn’t have been posting on the Internet anyway; I was supposed to be at church. Damn me to Hell.
Besides, I realized that we decide to task God with solving our problems, then by exacerbating these problems we are fighting against God. And by advocating this blasphemy, I was going to be damned to Hell anyway.
Sorry all.
from the linked apple webpage it looks like apple has had an environmental policy since 1990…..
Are these guys working closely with greenpeace marketing?
I’m so sick of environmentalist…
Always complaining and finding problems about others but have no real solutions to them.
While I’m all for helping minimize global warming and being more “green” I think its getting a bit tiring when groups like this slam Apple when they openly admit they have no information to go by. You can’t just give a bad score because Apple doesn’t publicly boast about their efforts.
Piss off ron. Fake-o little puss.
The Day After Tommorow…its a true story, once that happens in real life the air will “smell cleaner”
Who cares.
Im just happy that my new 24″ iMac is on the FedEx truck to be delivered TODAY!!
Replacing my 5yr old Dual 1GB G4 should help reduce my electric bill (not that that’s why I bought it).
I too agree that Nuke power + reasonable conservation is the only solution to America’s energy needs. Unfortunately, here in Ca, the State Gov has fully submitted to the Enviro Natzis and outlawed any new nuke plants. So we just buy our energy from other states that produce it mostly by burning coal, the dirtiest fossil fuel.
But hey-
I’m getting my new iMac today!! Frickin cool!
They’re just after headlines. Apple is one of the few companies these days that are guaranteed column inches.
For years they were ignored, but now their a focus point.
Apparently the new media is not very bright. I blame “Journalism” degrees. A proper education in economics or Poli-Sci will produce a thinking journalist. Journalism degrees just produce monkeys who can type.
But I’m not bitter, just a Swing Geezer.
As Falkirk said, this is the exact same thing Greenpeace was latching on to: the fact that Apple doesn’t SAY anything about the fact that they are FAR ahead of EVERY OTHER COMPUTER MANUFACTURER from an environmental perspective.
Morons. All they want is free publicity. It’s much more effective to just go guide your friends towards environmental-friendliness rather than being stereotypical jerk liberals like these groups.
Global Cooling
Lot’s of “real” scientists, with “real” data point to cooling not warming.
Next time the “Global Warming” hyper idiots scream about the world will end, ask them to show you the hard data, actual recorded past historical data that shows this.
They can’t.
This warming hype is ALL based on computer models looking to the future. How accurate are those? Just ask your local weather man how well they predict the weather 5 days in advance. NOT VERY WELL.
There is no climate crisis, never has been, never will be. This is nothing more then a way for government to control more of your lives, and you should be writing your congressman to tell them so.
Otherwise one day, your going to wake up and in the name of some man made crisis with no basis in reality, your going be living in a world with no freedom to do much of anything and it will make the depression of the 30’s look trivial.
From Apple’s Environment page: “Purchase any qualifying Apple computer or monitor and receive free recycling of your old computer and monitor — regardless of manufacturer”
This says it all. Buy something, recycle your old stuff.
Besides, I currently have four computers. Instead of trashing them, I passed them on to friends and family who are still using them. They’re all working great and running the latest and greatest! Recycling for them is a long way off.
Mankind has nothing to do with climate change. Climate change has been happening as long as the earth has been around. Climate change happens regardless of what we do. The were no “polluting” cars around to warm up the earth after the last ice age. Global warming just happened. The pyramids used to be surrounded by farm land! You are better off investing in a company that makes state of the art multi-wavelength sunscreen than investing in green electronics companies. You will need the sunscreen regardless of what Al Gore thinks.
Just my $0.02
OK. How do any of Apple’s products contribute to global warming and climate change? I think this organization needs to explain that first before trying to hold any company accountable.
WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE! MOMMYYYYYYYY!!!!!!
Nuclear power, oh god not that! It doesn’t work safely.
That’s crap too!
If nuclear power was so unsafe please explain to me how the US Aircraft carriers and Subs have been running on nuclear power for over 30 years. Gee, not exactly a smooth ride in the big old ocean and they just keep running.
Oil and gas companies like their monopoly for energy, they are not about to loose Billions to Nuke power plants, so they fund all the anti-nuke groups to keep the public scared of them.
I always go back to the old George Carlin bit:
“Save the Planet? The Planet is fine. The people are fucked!”
Bastards!!!
Don’t they know it was that volcano in Chile that caused the cyclone in Burma?
I don’t think Apple is much better or worse than the other manufacturers here. But in terms of pollution and carbon in particular, wouldn’t these groups be much better targeting all the unnecessary waste? You look at the big picture and the massive carbon production comes from fires (many of them intentional), incinerators and factories, and fossil fuel powered engines. It’s suicidal to stop factories and gas/diesel engines. If they put their time & money into research and education to improve and bring down the cost of scrubbers and other filters, and battery fuel cells, it would make more sense than targeting small players like electronics manufacturers.
Just my two cents.
I have requested a list of Climate Counts technical qualifications to pass judgement on the companies on its hit list. So far no reply.
Enviros are a fundraising RACKET. They’re NOT objective, well-meaning groups. The more crazy nonsense they spew, the more headlines they get from a compliant media that needs to draw readers/viewers with the latest “crisis”! Even if there were a bit of global warming due to CO2, there’s very little we could do about it and it probably wouldn’t cause too much harm. The only long-term energy solution, of course, is nuclear. Oh, and BTW, nuclear power plants can now be built that produce basically NO radioactive waste. The real disaster is our energy policy.
@Think
So were not going to be cooked slowly in our own juices? Were going to be frozen as a food supply for future generations instead, wow what a relief.
ditto what the real ron said.
Wouldn’t Algore and Slick Willy have to have morals to help solve the “Morals Crisis”?
I actually believe that climate change is a problem, whether it’s caused by human activity or not (I actually believe the evidence supports the former).
However, even I take exception to this kind of reverse-McCarthyism that basically says “if you haven’t come up with some kind of shallow lip-service statement of intent, you’re basically part of the global problem.”
This is, of course, total and utter bullshit.
Let’s analyse a couple of areas where Apple has – for whatever selfish commercial reason – changed things in a way that benefits the environment.
• They produce computers that have longer in-service lifespans than most of their competitors in the PC marketplace. This has the effect of reducing the demand for new computers as well as a benefit in placing less stress on either landfill, recycling or other disposal methodologies.
• The iPod, which supplanted both the tape and CD Walkman as the de facto standard for portable music, is by its very nature more environmentally-friendly than the items it replaced: fewer moving parts and less wear-and-tear are just two reasons why an MP3 player – a market that Apple defined – is better than its predecessors. One battery that needs to be replaced every eighteen months to three years is another reason as opposed to filling the world with alkaline batteries.
And then there’s the simple fact that an iPod evolves with every new firmware update, thus enhancing the functionality and increasing the lifespan of the product: again this reduces strain on the world’s natural resources and reduces the carbon footprint of each unit when compared to the technology predecessor.
• Thanks to Apple’s development of a viable market for digital downloads, both the music and the video industry have a mechanism for servicing their respective markets by moving bits as opposed to atoms. Whether they like it or not, Apple has indirectly helped those companies to reduce their carbon footprints as they a) don’t have to produce a physical product, b) they don’t have to transport that product and c) customers don’t have to drive to a retail location to buy or rent that product.
This advantage now also extends to TV as well as iPod.
• Connecting an iPod to a car’s personal stereo is a far more environmentally-friendly approach to in-car entertainment than a daisy-chain of CD or MD autochangers. Less cabling and less plastic are just two factors. But we should also remember that we’re using the same iPod we use when we’re walking or listening to our home stereo. The net result is only one product being produced as opposed to three or four which serve the same purpose in different spaces.
• Apple’s packaging is also more efficient than it was before: I have the box for an iPod touch in front of me and the box for an old 1G iPod up on my shelf – I would argue that you can fit about eight times as many iPod Touch containers into the space taken by the older unit. That means one-eighth of the burden on transportation and recycling. And don’t even get me started on iPod nano or the Mac mini.
Some companies need to make environmental amends because their products and their methods of doing business suck (did I hear someone say Coca-Cola?), however some other businesses – and I include Apple – have created an environmental advantage simply by the products they make and the way in which they’re used.
It is partly Apple’s fault. They should have gone public with a denunciation of Greenpeace when they pulled their extortion act. Appeasement does not work. It only leads to more blackmail.
I do think it is important not to poison the environment we live in to the degree possible. That said, these kinds of groups do not do their supposed cause any favor with such stupid methods of determining who follows the values they favor. Even a 5-year-old conservative could see what’s wrong with that method, as evidenced here.
Still, all these pressure groups of all persuasions have one thing in common, particularly the conservative (as opposed to conservationist, though they’re guilty too) groups, they want power over other people’s lives. Power-seekers are the lowest form of scum in my book. We have so-called liberal groups that want to control production via all manner of schemes, and control and take what people have earned. Then worse, are the conservatives who also want to take what others have earned and finance bullshit like the endless Iraq undeclared war while not going after the people who actually attacked us, but also want to control people’s bodies, by making illegal private consensual activity between adults, and trying to control women’s bodies by making abortion illegal, the idiotic drug “wars” and other crap only the most vicious brain-dead could be for. These pressure groups are all evil, and are made possible by the same notion that other’s individual lives are within their domain.
There seems to be no one of real standing that questions the premise of anyone to control the lives of others, to question the whole premise underlying so much of what’s going on, particularly not the people who should be in the front lines of this effort, University professors, and to a lesser extent, the media (who are almost totally worthless, worse than worthless, directly harmful).
@ClimateCounts.org
Tell the guys who pay your bills I don’t like ground glass in my dairy, even if it’s environmentally friendly ground glass.
http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/stonyfield03_08.html
BOYCOTT STONYFIELD FARM.
This is a PR stunt for this yogurt company. They’re smearing Apple to get publicity for their self-serving “environmentalist” sales campaign. Let it backfire on them in a big way.
BOYCOTT STONYFIELD FARM. Spread the word, Apple fans!
ClimateCounts.org stupidly learned from Greenpiss? Haven’t we learned that publicly stated goal is a meaningless nonsense as a tool for ranking?
Yeah, I wonder why Apple DIDN’T counter Greenpeace more forcefully?
I’m with Falkirk, Steev, LinuxGuyAndMacProdigalSon and a half dozen others here.
Piss on the climate and these looney tunes. Sound like asshat libs, proud they are part of the entitlement generation, and cant cope with the real world.
The world will end in the year 1900… opps, no I mean 1985, opps, forgot, missed again, umm, oh, yeah 1999, that french dead dude who wrote a bunch of nonsense that no one seems to understand said that! Opps, we read that wrong, its 2000, damn it! Ok, then it has to be 2012, because that one group, ummm, oh, yeah, the Mayans said so, because you see their calendar stopped on Dec 21st 2012, you see, yeah, those Mayans knew something we don’t, beside how to feed themselves, oh yeah, and human sacrifices to some would be Sun God and Wind God really won’t save you starving civilization. I mean, come on, living on this god forsaken planet just sucks, so I really must comment on all of it and tell you all that the world will end… soon, no really, it will… I think?
All these tree huggers measure is what companies are SAYING they do. Not what they ARE doing.
So now Apple too has to waste time and resources on this non-issue…
Idiots.
Stonyfield Farm??? Where on earth did this come from??? And how is it related to this ClimateCounts.org? Or Apple?? (and while at that, why would you boycot Stonyfield Farm for an obvious accident; do you actually believe they put glass in their yogurt on purpose!!!???).
I can see a lot of people here who claim here that Holocaust never existed. It is a bit surprising, mainly for two reasons. First, the usual stereotype of a Mac user is that he/she is liberal-leaning, progressive, educated type (generally receptive to what overwhelming numbers in scientific community support). Second, now that even the most resistive of all governments in modern history has begun admitting that human-induced climate change is real and needs to be addressed, it’s rather strange to see people who still, for some strange reason, refuse to accept that (perhaps they work for oil companies….?).
Still, I agree with LeMecDuTex about the fact that Apple as a company generally does more with respect to climate change than it is credited for. I don’t know anything about ClimateCounts.org, so I won’t pass summary judgment on them (there is plenty of that already done here, I’m sure with no more specific knowledge about the organisation than mine). They may be in it for publicity. They also may be doing it because the actually believe in what they are doing. Again, not knowing anything about them doesn’t allow me to declare anything.
If they are in fact right, this is an easy problem for Apple to fix. All they need to do is appoint an environmental officer (if they don’t already have that function) and have this person work with all those eco-NGOs around the world to make sure they know what Apple does in this respect. All these NGOs are necessary in today’s world when big energy has so much power they can get away with anything and everything.
It doesn’t take long (approx. 5 sec) to search the net for info on how the “scientific community” feels about Global Warming….everyone above this post seems to think it’s fake….why? Sleep better at night? ——— copied from Wiki – “These basic conclusions have been endorsed by at least thirty scientific societies and academies of science,[4] including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries.[5][6][7] While individual scientists have voiced disagreement with some findings of the IPCC,[8] the overwhelming majority of scientists working on climate change agree with the IPCC’s main conclusions.[9][10]”
The threat of glabal warming notwithstanding, how can anybody differentiate between computer makers? They all (including Apple) have their production outsourced to the same Chinese sweatshops, they use the same components from the same manufacturers (Intel, Toshiba) who also outsource production to Taiwan or Mainland China.
This outfit is simply steaming because nobody at Apple sent them a list of promises. Wankers!
I think we may have to go back to the drawing board when the world cooled off this past winter and emissions are still up. How about building it right the first time, not cutting costs on material, and having the customer dispose of our equipment properly. Is that to hard?
@Ray
And you’ll go to heaven when you die… Get a flippin’ clue dude! Sure the climate has changed on this planet in the past…ON A GEOLOGIC TIMEFRAME!! Not over a matter of years/decades! But ignorance is bliss so keep on keeping on with your “beliefs” and let “God” take care of you.
@MCCFR
Thank you for some excellent points. I agree that digital downloads have made a welcome reduction in energy usage and pollution due to the decreased manufacturing and transportation-related requirements of digital downloads vs. physical media.
This is nothing more than a publicity stunt by a group who knows that no headlines would be generated if Sony or Dell were named as the worst because, honestly, those are companies who are no longer relevant. But the media idiots would love to jump on Apple because it’s a hugely high-profile company.
As someone who formerly believed in global warming until I began researching the issue myself (as opposed to listening to the media always state this hypothesis as if it were fact), I’d suggest reading these articles:
Little Ice Age is still with us
The politics of global warming
There is no man made global warming. Everything works in cycles. These are the same idiots who diverted food to make fuel that was less effcient than what we already have in the earth naturally, OIL.
@I’m confused…
you lost me at “copied from wiki”
Hey Cleetus, who put a nickel in your back and pulled your string? No need to dig on someone for their religious beliefs. Leave that to the MicroSuck boys in their forums. Be a bit more courteous here.
People – you have got to wake up and smell the money trail. Al Gore has won a Oscar and the freakin’ Nobel Peace Prize (how does the facade of Global Warming bring about peace, by the way?) for his load of crap. He will even sell you Carbon Credits for your misdeeds of carbon emissions. He will fly his huge jet across this world, spewing who knows how much carbon emissions, just to tell you to ride your bike to work instead of driving. ALL of this to be holier than thou. Oh, and let’s not forget that little thing called the almighty dollar. That’s what he is really after.
In the 70’s, Time Magazine told us that right about now, we should actually be in an Ice Age. A FREAKIN’ ICE AGE. How are we supposed to predict the future when my weather can’t the the 5 day forecast right?
1) There is free energy available everywhere, the problem with that is that it is free so there is no profit to be made from it.
2) Control of energy supplies is crucial to maintaining power.
3) Apple stands out as a truthteller, that’s not good for the other guys.
4) Any way to bash Apple helps the bad guys
5) Messing up your own back yard is foolish. It’s a globalized world, your back yard is my back yard.
6) Global warming is a red herring, but it is a problem and humans are contributing. It is a red herring because the problem can be solved in very short order, working out how to profit from it is more difficult, there is a long term plan, and a plan B….. and while they are worried about global warming they may not notice what else is going on.
7) For every atom of carbon put in to the atmosphere two atoms of oxygen are taken away from oxygen breathing species.
8) The technological answer is to use more energy in freeing oxygen from mineral compounds to pump in to the atmosphere. Sounds very profitable, even more so than “healthcare” – provided they can keep the lid on free energy.
9) It matters little who you vote for, they are mostly all bought and paid for by the same cartels.
10) Free energy has been known about for 150 years.
Recommended viewings: search for “heavy watergate”, search for “the history of oil”, search for “thunderbolts of the gods”.
Also research why the banks closed down Tesla’s free energy transmitter?
Don’t pollute – yes
don’t be wasteful – yes
Believe in man-made global warming hype – NO!
What will climatecounts.org do with the next volcano that spews more gasses and debris into the atmosphere than what we’ve done in the last thousand years?
Maybe they’ve never heard of Mt. St. Helens.
Greenland was once green. Now it is frozen tundra.
So much for man-made global warming and destroying the earth with “paper or plastic”.
The UN extortionists and other environmental whack job should be as concerned with Iran, N. Korea, as nuclear threats as with goin’ green pseudo-science.
Global warming is an immense myth, just like the Y2K bug was. It’s just used as a vehicle to line Al Gore’s pockets. Any idiot that believes in this crap deserves to be taken for every dime they have.
Based on the comments to this article I now see the downside of Apple’s increased market share–ignorant fools have become Mac fanboys.
Well let’s just turn up the air conditioning while we play on our Macs and not worry about the planet being overwhelmed with people and their impacts. We all know when it gets really bad the rapture will come and suck us all up to Heaven. Unfortunately, that guy at the gates of heaven looks a lot like Ballmer and he has a nice Vista-loaded Dell just waiting for you in the clouds.
P.S. – I’m certainly not defending tactics of ClimateCounts.org. Using Apple’s name is just their way of drawing attention to themselves.
84 Mac Guy…
Don’t wish to shatter your delusion, but the ‘ignorant fools’ have been here for ages: in addition, they’ve been pretty abusive to anyone who might happen to believe in anthropogenic climate change change.
These people would actually turn up their air-conditioning or buy a more obscene SUV simply out of a point of principle, which appears to be linked to some perceived entitlement in some imaginary version of the Constitution. I’ll take a guess that a Venn diagram would show a massive overlap with the people who believe that income taxes are The Man’s way of keeping an ordinary joe in his place as opposed to being a necessary part of running a sophisticated industrialised economy.
Climate change is NORMAL.
Manmade Global Heating (my new term for it just cause it sounds funny) is a hoax.
When even George Bush admits he was wrong, that man-made global warming exists, maybe some of you should step back and re-evaluate the evidence.
This might help:
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Library/GlobalWarmingUpdate
Mark,
You’re dealing with people who take things literally: they’re all going to actually take a step back and then complain that they can’t reach the keyboard.
I want to know who to blame for the end of the LAST ice age. See, remember how we learned about the ice bridge connecting Alaska to Russia? That disappeared at the end of the last ice age. Now, who do we need to blame for that because obviously somebody needs to pay up. Obviously there was a conservative conspiracy to bring about the end of the earth even back then.
Now that my tongue-in-cheek rant is over:
THE EARTH EXPERIENCES NATURAL CYCLES OF CLIMATE CHANGE.
I’m not disputing that we’re experiencing an upswing now, I’m just saying that there’s literally nothing we can do to effect the weather and bend it to our wills.
The great thing about Americans that believe in freedom (as in, willing to die to protect it) is that we can learn to adapt.
I knew a family in Georgia that actually built an underground home (more or less built into the side of a small hill – the front was exposed but there was grass on top) that stays warm in winter and cool in the summer. Their electricity bill is typically around $35/month. It’s easy to pick on them because we don’t see this often, but hey, maybe they’re not too crazy after all. I’m not sure how that worked out for the extra cost of digging out the ground and waterproofing and so on, and that’s certainly not an option in my region (we would need to have immersible homes here in South Louisiana).
I’m looking into options for reducing my cost in fuel and electricity but it’s primarily to reduce my dependency on utility companies, financial savings, emergency preparedness. When the grid power goes out, I don’t want to lose everything in my refrigerator/freezer. I would also like the ability to have lighting and radios in an emergency.
Please don’t let politicians scare you into action. Trust me, they have ulterior motives. Probably stock in the companies selling stuff to “make you green.” Do it because you have reached down into the cocles, or even the sub-cocles of your heart (credit to D Leary) and you realize that you are ultimately responsible for your own fate.
Climate change is a reality… what’s not is that Man has much impact on it.
Climate change is simply an aspect of the Earth’s environment and has occurred more times in the Earth’s past than any one can know. We only know for certain about the ones we do know by what their remains in the surviving geological record, but there is no way to know about all those that occurred that left no record or where remains were destroyed by changes in the geological record.
And, when it comes down to it, there is no clear-cut, start-to-finish complete trail of evidence for past climate change. There’s lot of purely speculative deduction that has been drawn to reach climate change conclusions. Just like there is no clear-cut, start-to-finish complete trail of evidence for the evolution of life or the development of man. Most stuff just hasn’t survived the upheavals of geological change. You know… the upwelling of mountain ranges, the flooding of the Mediterranean basin, continental drift and all that.
And, BTW, those geological changes… they’re a part of climate change, too. So, we’re going to have to figure out how to stop those from occurring also. After all mankind is responsible for climate change.
Scientists Studying global warming are not objective, they have a financial stake in the findings that Man is causing global warming. If the global warning studying scientists said tomorrow we were wrong this is just a natural warming cycle the planet is have, all the research money would dry up over night, the non-profits collecting money to fund their jobs, and the companies working to cash in would all go belly up.
The planet has gone through heating and cooling cycles for eons, is man having an effect on the planets natural cycles? “yes”, will it be runaway greenhouse global warming? “no”, the science and studies all show that man’s effect on climate change is less then .01 degrees per year. Can you redo the math to make is look worse? “sure”, it’s done all the time in statistic and deviations math.
The truth on human effect on global warming is between, Not at all and well maybe a fraction. Is this a reason to dismiss environmental concerns no. Pollution and waste are real problems that need to be addressed. Global warming is not an issue that should or be allowed to remove the spotlight from Pollution and waste. If the scientist that are now spending Billions and Billions of our dollars, pounds, euros, yen, pesos…. on Global Warming Research send that money on cleaning up the pollution and to create cheaper environmentally friendly sources of energy to replace carbon based fuels. They’d solve their own concerns and speculations on what is causing the Global warming according to them.
The Money stream is to lucrative to give up right now. In a few more years when the Global Warming money starts drying up it’s be off to some other natural disaster man is causing, that we need to spend Billions, Upon billions, upon Billions to study so we can prevent it.
Who remembers the Antarctic OZone hole, that scientist predicted would cause global disaster and nuclear type death and destruction. Research Scientist now are saying that the Ozone hole would not cause a major disaster to earths environment. Nor, would it have likely effect humans much. it also appears their are naturally fluctuating Ozone holes at the poles that go from very small to huge over time. So, it’s likely that their never was a serious OZone layer hole to panic about.
The Ozone Panic Scientists and the Global Warming panic Scientist are mostly the same.
April 2008 was the coolest month of April in 114 years.
Al Gore must have forgotten to sacrifice a goat to the AGW gods!
@Predrag
The connection between ClimateCounts.org and Stonyfield Farm is that Stonyfield Farm is the source of funding for ClimateCounts.org. The implication is that Stonyfield sanctioned the study which made Apple look environmentally unfriendly. That perception is seen as inaccurate by the majority members on this board.
I’m not entirely sure see your connection to holocaust denial or how it applies to an Apple Inc fan site. However this statement bleeds hypocrisy given that one paragraph later you abstain from passing judgment on ClimateCounts.org for lack of information.
How can you possibly claim deduce from responses to article that the commenters here hare anti-global warming or anti-semitic? It is inconceivable you are any more informed on the socio-political and environmental leanings of this community than you are on climatecounts.org. So given your own which you proudly planted your flag on, it is egregious that you claim competency to judge us.
By the look of this thread more conservatives are coming over from the dark side. It’s about time.
Climate change is a hoax, evolution is just a “theory”, stem cells are against nature, nuclear power is a clean energy system, we’ve been ignoring free energy for over 150 years, “abstinence only” is a successful program, we’re winning in Iraq, the economy is going swimmingly.
And the estimated population of the world will pass 6,666,666,666 today. It’s true, it’s on Slashdot!
Climate crisis or not… I am really sick of these “ratings” that are all about lip service.
Frankly, I much prefer organizations that speak through actions not words. Whether it be issues, products, whatever.
I mean Al Gore is on the friggin’ board. Surely such issues are not ignored at Apple (his OWN footprint aside.)
Plus the whole thing seems absurd. Measure the carbon produced by the server farms serving up iTunes. Do they get credit for the CDs not trucked? All absurd to worry about. Reality: the dramatic increases in energy costs will provide far more motivation than some sort of eco rating. (Now if oil as still $10 bbl, we could debate its hidden costs. But it’s $130, so every less greedy capitalist organization on the planet will conserve.)
Global warming (or climate change as they are calling it now since it is not warming) is the same as the ozone holes in the 90s. The holes were said to be man-made, caused by car exhaust, freon from air conditioners, and hair spray. If that was true the holes would be over the big cities where the people are, not over the south or north pole.
The true cause is a natural reaction of the ozonosphere when the sun’s radiation hits it. Or in the case of the ‘hole’ doesn’t hit it.
Always research all sides of an issue first and don’t just parrot what someone else has says. Otherwise you might as well be a typical PC user.
I worried about global BS.
Global warming has to do with what the average temperature is over a period of time. The average temperature of the Earth has been going up at about 1.5 degrees per year last year and I think the year before. Over the past decade there have be highest average temperature record for three or four years. It is not that there aren’t cycles of climate change but that the length of the cycles has shortened over the pas 100 years or so.
I have to agree that these organizations seem to come out of nowhere to complain about Apple. It seems they use Apple to try and get street credit and to raise money. They are not always doing it for the best reasons. Apple does needs to be proactive and not reactive. They to be upfront and to tell what they are doing to help the planet.
@hagar57 I agree with your basic conclusion but I disagree that they all use the same components. Even if Apple outsources to the same factory as say a Dell or an HP. Apple has a history of using higher quality components and even quality vendors. Tis all goes into the design considerations for which aApple pays a higher price and passes it on to us the consumer. By the same token fewer Mac end up in land fills or become toasters with blue screes of death, by virtue of Apple having a more thoughtful design, better quality control and hence a better environmental record than all those wanker computer companies that give lip service to the butt cheeks of these brainless environmentalist mouth pieces.
Apple is unfairly singled out on environmental issues BUT….
you folks posting here are acting like a bunch of materialist egomaniac fascists!
Shameful!
“you folks posting here are acting like a bunch of materialist egomaniac fascists!

Thanks for all that Peter. make many friends ?
Here is a thought, how about instead of going after apple for not helping to solve the climate crisis, how about you go after the oil companies whose products are causing this crap in the first place!!!!! We need a president that will actually do something about it, not hillary though, she can’t satisfy her husband, you think she can satisify america? As bob says “I doubt it”.
“…how about you go after the oil companies whose products are causing this crap in the first place!!!!!”
‘Cause the crisis* is made up to begin with? Besides, I think all but the most fever-swamped activists would agree that Big Oil™ is getting their comeupins already with their execs appearing before congress…
*By crisis, I mean man-made Global Heating. There IS an oil crisis as indicated by the rising cost of fuel, but I place most of the fault on unneeded artificial government controls and regulation.
To all those who claim climate change is normal:
Yes, climate change is normal – over centuries and millennia, not decades. Much of “global warming” has occurred over the last 30 years or so (an OBSERVED measurement for all those who decry computer-generated models).
And for those of you who criticize our ability (or lack thereof) to predict the weather:
Weather patterns occur and shift constantly whereas climate is (or was and should be) much more consistent and stable.
Also, keep in mind that volcanic eruptions actually cool the Earth’s surface by spewing sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere (one level up from where we are, the troposphere, so don’t think sulfur emissions are beneficial because they will most likely never reach the stratosphere without the help of some kind of upwards pushing force), which reflects the sun’s radiation, resulting in a short-term global cooling.
I’m not condoning climatecounts.org or criticizing Apple, but denying that the Earth is warming at an unusual rate is rather ignorant. Personally, I think it’s a little too late to stop it now, but we’d best be ready for any future rapid climate change, should it occur. After all, history has shown us that what goes up must eventually come down.
This is all BS. I say who contributes to global warming. I got me a Nobel prize and an oscar for fcuk sake.
Those stupid people in Florida ruined everything.
Regarding: “Global warming has to do with what the average temperature is over a period of time. The average temperature of the Earth has been going up at about 1.5 degrees per year last year and I think the year before.”
Not true. In fact, global average temperature DROPPED 0.7 deg C from March 1, 2007 through Feb. 29, 2008, losing much of what it gained over the previous century. Oops! That’s why it’s now called “climate change” (playing both ends against the middle).
Here’s a question to deal with: What temperature SHOULD it be?
How does anyone know what the “right” global temperature should be? What it was during the LIA? Or the MWP? Or the RWP? Or during the Holocene warming? Or maybe during the last ice age? How about what was typical during the Jurassic? Climate history is not so simple and the question about whether or not we’re going to have significant global warming in future years cannot be answered with any degree of certainty, despite IPCC computer-based projections.
Climate changes. Whether or not humans have any significant role has not been determined, it’s only been hypothesized. Some scientists believe the theory plausible. Others do not. But it is only a THEORY that has yet to be demonstrated scientifically.
Also worthy of comment: “Over the past decade there have be highest average temperature record for three or four years. It is not that there aren’t cycles of climate change but that the length of the cycles has shortened over the pas 100 years or so.”
Looking at a snippet of time of such short duration is meaningless in terms of climate. It would be like taking a 4 second portion of an NFL football game in the first quarter and trying to predict what the rest of the game will be like.
Climate change spans much larger periods than a few years. Temperatures since 2002 have actually been trending downward (take a look at
for the quarterly results and linear regression data fits showing the trend), based on UAH MSU and Hadley measurements.
Temperature spikes coming out of the LIA are very similar to what was observed in the 1990s. Temperature spikes entering the MWP were also similar, and the Earth has still not reached the warming levels of the MWP, a warming that spanned centuries, was not uniform, and certainly not caused by humans.
There are those who would say, “But wait, CO2 was much lower then” … to which one can reply, yes, and CO2 was much higher during past ice eras and epochs. Over the scale of millions of years, there is no correlation between CO2 and global temperature. Over the scale of centuries, there is no correlation. Over the scale of hundreds of thousands of years, there appears to be a correlation, but only by shifting CO2 to make up for the lag it exhibits behind temperature changes. Until those “scientists” (who believe in the IPCC/Gore THEORY that regards CO2 as a significant climate change force) can explain why CO2 has never before in Earth’s history been a significant climate change force, then why should anyone believe their opinions about future warming based in the relatively miniscule CO2 input from human activity?
I am – have been – a customer of Stonyfield Farms products…
No more…
Do you know the CEO of Stonyfield has written a book he heavily advertises? Do you think this campaign will add to the sales of his book?
What he has not counted on though is that his unwarranted attack will piss off a lot of Apple people – like me – and they will certainly lose a lot of customers – like me…
And what really piss me off – you can’t email the a$$hole… Think they prepared for a storm of pissed off customers?

re:”It doesn’t take long (approx. 5 sec) to search the net for info on how the “scientific community” feels about Global Warming….everyone above this post seems to think it’s fake….why? Sleep better at night? ——— copied from Wiki – “These basic conclusions have been endorsed by at least thirty scientific societies and academies of science,[4] including all of the national academies of science of the major industrialized countries.[5][6][7] While individual scientists have voiced disagreement with some findings of the IPCC,[8] the overwhelming majority of scientists working on climate change agree with the IPCC’s main conclusions.[9][10]””
I teach English. If a student uses anything out of Wiki to support a position, we require that every Wiki source be backed up by independent evidence.
Wiki in an of itself is just a big dumping ground for whatever people want to put in it, a mix of opinion and facts.
I know there are people of believe that opinion = fact. They are wrong. Political correctness requires that we not use the word wrong. Politically correct people are wrong!
Nuclear power is an insane fantasy, a “cop out” and another silly way to boil water. It is an excuse to turn technology originally used to kill people into “peaceful purposes”, much like chemical agriculture, chemo-therapy etc. I’d rather have pollution that I can see and choke on (very motivating!) than insidious, sickly and deadly radiation that we pretend is “clean” and “green”. There are plenty of viable alternatives that could have been implemented decades ago. Get a clue – we are surrounded by energy.
Hello ‘down’,
You know, come to think of it, TNT is just a silly excuse to turn yellow dye (its original use) into high explosives. They should have just kept using TNT for dye…
Technology itself is amoral, and that’s the beauty of it; technology developed for warfare can be used for any number of civilian applications. And nobody’s “pretending” nuclear power is 100% clean, but it’s a heck of a lot more efficient than solar or wind power (not to mention more reliable). The reason newer ‘green’ energy sources haven’t caught on (without extremely wasteful government subsidies) is because they just plain suck.
Your comments, especially in regards to chemotherapy (which has SAVED THE LIVES of many people I know) lead me to believe that you are a moron.
A few hours later and I feel that I need to apologize for calling ‘down’ a moron. I still have the same opinions about things, but I shouldn’t resort to name-calling.
Global warming caused by man? Such a sickly and ugly scam.
Folks who read and understand know that planet earth is very
Stained by man, it’s true, but here we
Differ knowing what is what – Fundamental – Obvious.
It’s not man, the ice cores scream, it’s just some plan
That’s slow and clean and has no ‘carbon offset’ sheen,
But still so many fools exist to parrot foolish words that miss
And so misunderstand that weather models aren’t so grand,
In fact, this science falls apart, it’s fragile numbers all distort
What has been going on and on, an icy age and then a warm,
Again and then again, as well, this cold and warm is cyclical…
Cycles are not weird or strange, they’re normal, though we rearrange
The numbers, it’s still so plain that nature rules and man just fools
Around with silly human games…
There are only 3 things you need to know about the anthropogenic global warming hoax:
1. C02 (which plants love BTW) increases in the atmosphere FOLLOW global warming, not the other way around. If you look closely at the graph in “An Inconvenient Truth” you can see this. However, in this particular section of the film, Al Gore glosses over this fact and claims the opposite. The man is a greedy liar and should be kicked off the board of our beloved Apple.
2. If it were possible for man to warm the planet, IT WOULD BE A GOOD THING. When the planet was warmer in the past than it is now, civilization thrived. Cooling is MUCH more dangerous than warming and, ironically, global cooling will require much more energy to be expended to keep us and our crops warm.
3. We are officially now in our tenth year of global cooling and many scientists without an AGW grant are confirming that this is just the beginning. Expect MUCH cooler years ahead.
And another thing.
Oil is not a fossil fuel! It is abiotic and has been found as deep as 30,000 ft. below the surface, much deeper than any past organic life has lived. Oil is in endless supply but like diamonds, it is kept expensive by keeping it rare. If it is a “fossil” fuel then it must eventually run out, right? If it can be found at deep levels everywhere then what usefulness is that to the government (who is the primary profiteer on the high price of oil not the eeevil oil companies).
Therefore, it is said we need to move to conservation even though there is no way to “conserve” our way out of the current oil supply mess given that China is adding car drivers by the millions every year.
The reality is that oil is an almost magical substance. It is plentiful, can be acquired with very little damage to the local environment, new IC engine technology makes using it for fuel very enviornmentally friendly, and it is continually replenished in the crust of the earth.
The US has enough known reserves to last us 200 years without ever using a drop of oil from the terrorist nations of the ME or doing more exploration (which would produce hundreds of years of new reserves. But instead, this country has to be an environmentally imperialist nation. We refuse to use our own resources but instead, take them from other countries. It is the End of the World™ if we drill in the arctic wasteland but just fine to drill in the fragile deserts of Kuwait.
Bottom line: There is zero reason to abandon oil. We have the infrastructure to transport and refine it. It can now be burned cleanly in the latest engines from Detroit and Japan. It is plentiful and we need it for the manufacture of plastics anyway. It forms the foundation of freedom.
Although I am not encouraging this because it is not the government’s job to give stuff away; if we were to take all the boondoggle funding for things like ethanol mandates, windmill farms (a truly idiotic energy source if there ever was one), solar panel subsidies, and other government energy porkbarrel projects and just bought everyone a new car (getting rid of those old VW buses, and 1975 Volvo station wagons that professors drive around with Save the Whale bumper stickers on them), we could clean the atmosphere up really quick.
But the reason that oil is eeevil is that it allows people to drive and we can’t have that, nosiree. If people can drive where they want to then how can the we possibly control their lives? After all, the proletariate need to live in tall government provided housing near the center of crime ridden cities and ideally, should move from place to place using a urine encrusted public transportation system of some kind.
Yeah, that’s the ticket.
