NPD: Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard launch its best ever

The launch of Apple Inc’s latest operating system, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, was its best ever, NPD Group said on Monday.

“When comparing the first full month of sales of Apple Mac OS 10.5 ‘Leopard’ (November 2007) to the first full month of sales for Mac OS 10.4 ‘Tiger’ (May 2005), dollar volume for Leopard was up 32.8 percent and unit volume up 20.5 percent, NPD Group Inc said in a statement,” Duncan Martell reports for Reuters.

“The new version of Apple’s OS X software costs $129 for a single user and $199 for a ‘family pack’ that can be installed on as many as five computers in a single household,” Martell reports.

“Leopard is the sixth version in as many years, a fact the Cupertino, California-based concern is quick to contrast with Microsoft Corp, which went more than five years between new versions of its Windows operating system,” Martell reports.

  1. OSX user since Cheeta. Boy, that sounds like ages ago. I had a dual USB iBook, 128MB ram, 10GB hd, G3 500MHZ processor. Even though Cheeta was the beta OSX, I was running it because it was still more stable than OS9.

Even when OSX was in beta it was still better than where Windows is today, but only six years ago.

  2. @ Chris

I’ll agree the majority of people probably don’t use all of the 5 pack, but I’ll bet quite a few do. I certainly did.

Compare a family wiht 3 windows boxes. Well over $600 bucks to upgrade to Vista–if it even makes sense to do so hardware wise.

Under $200 to upgrade 3 Macs to Leopard.

so ever 2 years you pay a small price to upgrade a great operating system with great new feautres, or wait 7 years for a disaster like Vista to come out.

    It’s not even even close.

And all these Windows trolls trying to make the comparison are keeping P.T. Barnum laughing in his grave.

  3. “And all these Windows trolls trying to make the comparison are keeping P.T. Barnum laughing in his grave.”

That certainly explains the odd chuckling noises wafting from Mountain Grove Cemetery in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Be careful or Fox will make a reality series from it.

  4. @Jimbo von Winskinheimer and all other trolls…

Funny how XP SP2 was considered an upgrade (and every other service pack, code hack and vulnerability patch also). Yet any point release for Apple is just minor even though the system usually runs faster, is more secure and more stable than the last. None of which can be said for the innumerable hacks that have fuqued up millions of Dell, Hp, and generic windows boxes over the past 8 years.

Balmer isn’t the only one throwing chairs. So are his customers. The end of the empire is near sycophants. Flee to Argentina if you can…

  5. It sure is entertaining to see the anecdotal stories of how bad Vista is and the problems people are having with it.

I’ll boil this down to one basic element. These are people I call an acronym but will simply say it here.

    Cannot Understand New Technology.(s) ;P

This is applicable to EVERYTHING, no matter what it is. From that fancy new colour photocopier in the office to a Tivo or an iPod or a myriad of other new devices that peole just are not willing to RTFM!!! The endless drivel of the whining and groaning that someone cannot stand something new all because they are unwilling to LEARN how to function with the new technology.

I’m primarily focused on the thing that people are so called downgrading to XP because Vista doesn’t work, has incompatibilities, differences ad nauseum.

Focus on that all ya want, but this same thing was said of previous iterations with the Mac OS when major changes came along. The seemingly endless whines about incompatibilities and other issues surrounding those rollouts was pretty loud and clear.

    Cannot Understand New Technology. (s)

Diss MS if you want, but don’t gloss over the fact that Apple has had its share of woes along the way with those unwilling souls who do not read information on how to use and navigate the workings of a new generation OS. Add to that the few links I noted on the page as I write this speaking of updates and things for the various apple warez to resolve ongoing issues. It’s irrelevant to make such statements without first looking in one’s own back yard for problems there.

Linux is an awesome environment, but it is not for novice or intermediate users. Period. The acronym most definitely applies here.

Windows and Mac OS environments are all derived from the same minds that brought the GUI to us, never forget that. Virii issues with Windows would be just as prevalent on the Mac OS, had the market share been the reverse. Larger targets mean more mischief for them little pissants out there with nothing better to do.

Incidently, someone said something about 6-7 year wait for vista? Try 5. And SP2 came out somewhere in the middle. I could nitpick and casually say that the dot iterations of the current Mac OS are no different to me than that of a service pack from MS. Bit annoying that you have to pay in some situations for what amounts to an update to an OS, to *fix* something or add something. Those apples look alot like oranges when I compare the two.

I had to laugh at one post about a guy who spends a month tweaking his PC after the install. A MONTH? You running a 286 there bub? Took me 20 minutes to install the Vista OS, and about 30 minutes or so of other post install items (drivers, additional software etc) and I was done. This incidently includes the few tweaks to turn this and that feature off to allow me to “use” the OS. That was over a year ago and I have NEVER had to reinstall since and everything is running great. Can’t understand…..

Odd. The same bitching was heard similarly across both camps for the shortcomings and dissapointment of those salivating to be at the bleeding edge in their chosen OS. “The previous version was better” can be heard all over the place for both OSs, both past and current. Issues with compatibility are the most common, both camps failing to take into consideration these new OSs will have flaws and issues along the way, with a service pack or dot release to come along and fix those and give you more headaches as you try to get past the bugs this new pack introduced with its new features and things.

The computer world changes rapidly, and with it come changes to the requirements of the OS of choice.

Oh…and about backwards compatibility in another comment I read. Try installing Mac X on an older mac pre G3 and see how far you get. I can install Vista on any Pentium 1 machine if I so chose to do so. Gathering enough hard memory for such an old system would be difficult, but it can be done. How well it runs (re: speed) is up for debate however. Some hardware may not be available depending on how “generic” it is. I can still use win2000 drivers for some older printers in Vista for example, something the mac commercial that talks of this conveniently left out. Or that other one with the web cam being taped to the guy’s head. Funny, but Dell and HP had been doing the built in camera for a couple years before I saw that commercial.

    I digress….

  6. Well well now we see the real numbers. Apple 2 million in the first month, and that is the best ever? Vista went 20 million in the first month is is being disected by you Ifanbois like it is a thanksging turkey. Man what you boys smokin? Oh must be some of that fervent Reichstag propaganda from der Fuerer Steve Jobs….
You guys cant even keep your stories in focus
