Analyst: Apple TV update planned; Next-gen iPhone in final phase; iPod ahead of expectations

“After meeting with key component suppliers and manufacturers in Asia, researchers for investment bank Goldman Sachs said this week they believe Apple will introduce two revisions to the iPhone in 2008 — one minor, one major — in addition to an Apple TV overhaul during the second half of the year,” Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider. “In a research note on Tuesday, analyst David Bailey advised clients that his Far Eastern contacts have lead him to believe that ‘Apple has several important new products lined up for 2008.'”

The analyst’s note includes:
• Next-gen iPhone will “probably” include 3G; due 2nd half of 2008
• Current iPhone may get storage capacity bump before next-gen is released
• Changes to Apple TV “could include an LCD display”
• Subnotebook info is scarce; one supplier says product may be pushed out due “design issues”
• iPod shipments higher than expected this quarter
• Double-digit iPod growth expected for 2008

  1. No DVR in ATV, i mean come on, is there a DVR on your iPod. geez. It is like you want the ATV to DVD or Blu Ray player installed on it, and have the application run too. Hmm what i think they have something like that already, OH yeah it is called a computer and the mac mini can do this all, so if you want an apple TV buy it, if you want what soon becomes a computer buy a damn computer and hook it up to your TV simple fix.

  2. WOW Mac Mini can do all that, and Blu-Ray too where can I get one!

“It is like you want the ATV to DVD or Blu Ray player installed on it, and have the application run too. Hmm what i think they have something like that already, OH yeah it is called a computer and the mac mini can do this all,”

Every once in a wile I need a good swift kick in the but, to day could be one of these days. Sorry for the snarkyness but it had to be said.

  3. LCD display for Apple TV is at most a “good to have” but not a necessity. Movie rentals is a necessity. More iTunes content in general is an absolute necessity.

DVR added to Apple TV is probably the stupidest thing one could ever think of, as long as you have iTunes in the picture.

Ultra-thin portable laptop will come. And the big suprise will be a “detachable” screen, making the keyboard a dock station, and the display a multi-touch MacTablet.

    Macworld will reveal all

  4. “Apple has several important new products lined up for 2008”

And I heard from key moisture suppliers in the atmosphere that the weather probably has several important snow storms lined up for 2008, somewhere in North America or Europe.

Amazing what can be predicted these days.

  5. An LCD could be pretty cool. Apple could use it for such non-existent features as a clock when the device is turned off. Clearly this will boost sales ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  6. Hmmm, a device with a 40 – 160gb hard drive and display screen, that syncs up to your computer and allows you to view and listen to multimedia content. And I thought Steve was kidding about the 8lb iPod. I don’t believe this rumor though. Actually, an LED that displayed the track would be nice (I have both and Apple TV and a Roku Soundbridge in different rooms), but the navigation could be confusing. And I don’t think Apple would do something that common (or ugly). Sometime it would be nice to listen to music on the Apple TV without having to turn the TV on though. As for Apple TV upgrades, the only thing I’d like is to add an external drive without having to hack it. I have to stream content from my Macbook Pro because the 40gb is to small (and the 160gb wouldn’t be enough either now that I’m holding video).
