“What could/should Apple do to take sales and profits to the next level? Simple. Release an Apple branded Windows-based PC. I know, I know, this kind of talk is bound to upset the hardened Apple fanatic, but it makes perfect sense. One of the things that’s undoubtedly helped boost Mac sales is Boot Camp. Now there’s no punishment for switching platforms because you can take your old platform with you, but just as some people got tired of paying the Microsoft tax when they wanted a PC to run Linux on it, people who want Apple hardware in order to run Windows on it will eventually see the Mac OS as an Apple tax. Why doesn’t Jobs and the crew at Cupertino just skip that whole Apple tax step and offer customers a choice of operating systems. Since Windows is the dominant OS at present, that’s a good place to start, but if Apple really wants to offer the customer real choice, Linux would also be great,” Adrian Kingsley-Hughes blogs for ZDNet.
“If Apple really wants to rock investors and take profits to the next level, it should start offering Windows-based Macs. Profits would skyrocket, Apple would enter an existing market and shake it up, investors would be happy because Apple’s market share would explode and everyone would be happy,” Kingsley-Hughes writes.

Why doesn’t BMW just start offering vehicles with 3-cylinder Suzuki engines? Kingsley-Hughes obviously doesn’t get it: Windows tries to be an upside-down and ass-backwards fake Mac; and an older Mac, at that. Based on history, one would imagine that Apple CEO Steve Jobs thinks Windoze is a bad rip-off of his own company’s OS, perpetrated and inflicted upon the world by Bill Gates. The very last thing that an Apple headed by Steve Jobs would ever do would be to execute Kingsley-Hughes’ dopey, wrong-headed lunacy.
The world made a mistake with Windows. They must be educated; and, slowly, they are learning. Windows is junk compared to Mac OS X. Frustrating, uninspiring, derivative junk. Offering junk when you have a vastly superior product is not a recipe for success.
Boot Camp exists to provide a “Windows Insecurity Blanket” for the ignorant masses. It is an educational tool. It embraces junk in order to ultimately extinguish it. Boot Camp entices the Windows-only sufferers and quickly teaches them via simple comparison that, contrary to their belief, they do not need Windows and that they greatly prefer Macintosh.

“It’s closer to half and it’s called the Republican Party.”
Just because you don’t agree with someone, it doesn’t make them idiots. It’s called democracy. Elitism always has lead to absolute rule, I for one, don’t want to live in that kind of world. Think about it.
“Should Apple start offering Windows-based Macs?”
Of course!
And then “Steve Jobs should ‘shut down’ Apple Inc. and return the money to shareholders,”.
Being stupid is the one inalienable right no government can take away.
The man is quite obviously detached from reality in general, and computers in particular.
;(
I can’t believe someone would write this with any seriousness. It’s the innovation of products like OS/X that are the reason sales are soaring. If anything, the correct statement would be to sell OS/X for regular pcs, not give it up.
And to think this person gets paid a salary to say things like that…
And Olive Garden should start offering ravioli covered in poop sauce.
I don’t think Apple wants to add to their support headaches. It would be wise for Apple to steer clear of such silly nonsense!
MDN: You were served up a slow pitch right down the center of the plate and that was the best “Take” you could come up with?
If you need help writing these things, I am available…
“Just because you don’t agree with someone, it doesn’t make them idiots.”
I thought everyone else’s opinion was always wrong? Isn’t that how it works?
“And Olive Garden should start offering ravioli covered in poop sauce.”
Start?
Yes Apple really should go into the business of supporting Windows malware……
N O T !
Oh, crap…here we go again.
Magic Word: “staff” as in, “The MDN staff has infected us with THIS topic once again!”
Apple selling Windows-only boxes would reduce margins down to nearly nothing, and corporate IT departments would still ignore them because they’re afraid of Apple.
Apple should only sell Vista-based Macs if Microsoft will take responsibility for all the customer tech support calls. Having to run a customer tech support operation for Windows Vista would bankrupt Apple. Let Microsoft handle that mess.
I run Windows in Parallels and Boot Camp out of necessity. Software that I implement runs on MS SQL Server and Oracle – Windows only. Well, that’s life. Hopefully someday that will change, but not likely in the near future.
But to suggest Windows-only Apple systems defeats the purpose of a Mac. Mac OSX is simply a better, more stable, and more secure operating system. Push Boot Camp or Parallels and you get to run Windows without losing the superior OS. Which is what this clown is suggesting – lose MacOSX Shit, if you want to be a lemming just set your Mac up to initially startup with Windows!
Bad idea. This dude has some other agenda.
Lose the religion. Yes, Apple should offer Windows OS as a built-to-order option. However, it will be as a dual boot option. Then people can buy Parallel to run Windows in VM with Boot Camp Windows Partition.
Hell NO!
Instead, try capturing corporate and enthusiast business by releasing an $899 mid-tower.

or, looked at another way, it is true that if i disagree with someone they are not automatically stupid. but just maybe the reason i disagree with them is BECAUSE they are stupid.

stupid idea that caused alot of comments here.
However! Apple should release OS X and allow companies like Dell and Gateway to sell “their” own OS X boxes. THAT would take the apple to the next level. imagine an iDell, iSony or iAcer…. hmm i should trade mark that….
Should Apple start offering Windows-based Macs?
YES! To keep the like of DELL, HP and SONY out of the retail space as much as possible and in the crappy office/computer stores where they belong!!
STOP
THE
INSANITY!
What a retard.
I’m retarded so I can use that word. Anyone who is not a retard will be maliciously sued for using that term.
Should Apple start offering Windows (and Linux) -based Macs?
YES! To keep most all PC users coming in to Apple Stores and making it that their primary computer store.
Mac OS X is clearly the superior OS and will remain so, but others have other needs or something they are used to and can’t install a OS themselves.
By having something a computer user is used to first, then have them try another OS to see if they like it. Then make it easy to switch between OS’s.
Auto file transfer between OS’s!! and applications!
There really are some incredibly stupid people and Adrian Kingsley-Hughes is one of them.
Stupidest idea ever. Mac hardware is only 50% of the experience. And the hardware isn’t what you use to “work”. It’s the operating system. Duh.
