Apple wants their OS to be stolen and run on PC’s, it gives them more market penetration.
Apple isn’t interested in the common man who need a computer at a fair price. They just want the rich folks and those who will accept whatever hardware choices Apple makes for them.
Since Apple isn’t going to sell the common working man a computer, at least they have their OS running on his PC. Eventually hoping they will get more money as they get older and just go ahead and buy a Mac.
So Apple isn’t worried about us stealing their OS to run on PC’s or else they would make it harder for us to crack.

The price of macs are going down in general. I bought a 17 inch PB for over 3000 4 years ago (and it is still running). Now the equivalent model is 2600. You can get a 15 inch MBP for 1800 if you look around. Get the previous model for a discount.
If your business requires a mac then the upgrade of your computer will be worth it in terms of efficiency. Plus you can probably put some of the costs against tax.

I needed a small, reliable OS X based laptop with a matte screen to upload photos for about $1000.
I don’t need a laptop like a MPB that cost 3x as much as a MB just to get a matte screen because I might drop the thing tripping over a piece of wreckage or something.
I’m looking at getting a ToughBook as my next PC if I’m going to spend the big bucks.

On a more practical note, running important work on an unsupported configuration probably isn’t the smartest thing to do. When it eventually fails, don’t expect to get any sympathy.
Also, the MacBook is a consumer machine, so don’t expect it to do everything you want as a profesional photographer. By the way, you did have a choice about which computer to buy and you chose not to buy the MacBook Pro with a Matte screen. Don’t make it look like Apple is forcing you to buy anything. That attitude is as stupid as the one that people are suing Apple because they dropped the iPhone price.

If you buy a Macbook Pro, you get significantly more for your money that a matte screen. I think working on photos on a Macbook is kinda slumming, but I like a bigger monitor myself.

Well what happened is I got caught in a OS AND A HARDWARE lockin.
Now if I was running XP I could just switch hardware vendors and got a $1000 laptop PC with a matte screen which I need no problem. Install XP and my apps and been running just fine, although a crappy OS experience compared to OS X which I’m used to using all these years.
So my experience goes to show the dangers of a hardware lockin.
Apple shoves glossy displays down your neck and you just have to pony up 3x for a matte screen MBP or hit the highway.
Even if the $1000 MacBook with a matte screen was a few hundred dollars more than a glossy I would have gotten it because it’s worth it. But $3000 isn’t worth it for what I do.

Got to have AppleCare for a laptop especially. Then you need a case to protect the $3000 computer and they go for $100.
So it adds up to about $3000.
When a $1000 (or less) PC does the job and if it’s trashed it’s not that big of a loss compared to a $3000 MBP. Plus I don’t have to baby it.
Like I said, if the matte screen MB was a few hundred more than the glossy I would have gotten it.
But Apple didn’t offer that option, they just decided to force anyone who needed a matte screen to upgrade to expensive MBP where they make huge profits.

You must be using the New Math, because I get $2,512.36. And, you nicely neglect to add Apple Care to the price of the Macbook, and when you do, and add another Gig of RAM (I don’t care who you are, you need 2GB to use Photoshop in any sort of successful way), your $1,000 Macbook comes to $1,602.86. So the Pro is 900 bucks more.
And for that matter, you don’t add any extended warranty into the PC price, either. Or do you think you don’t need it on a Toughbook?

Apple made the decision to discontinue MacBooks with a matte screens and force us to buy expensive MacBook Pro’s instead using their OS and our investment in Mac OS X software as a leverage.

Well the PC I got was under $1000. came with a 3 year warranty and has a matte screen. Runs Mac OS X just fine. Don’t plan on updating the OS either in the shortterm. Will switch to XP or Vista so I have a larger range of hardware choices, Toughbook or cheap. My choice, not what Apple decides with a OS lockin.

It did cost over 500 dollars US.
The reason I got it was because batteries, replacement parts and such are easily obtained at any Walmart all over the country which I travel constantly.

I am still amazed the lengths this guy will go to justify why it is okay to be a thief. Wow, I have never interacted with someone that so fully felt justified in having stolen something. Your ability to justify stealing is amazing.

At least he actually has a case for why a glossy screen isn’t good enough. Most whiners are just like “ZOMG GLOSSY IS THE DEVIL!” without actually having tried it. I have, and even outside it’s not THAT bad except it direct, bright sunlight, especially if you turn the screen brightness down a bit.
The only time I’ve had trouble with glossy screens is helping out on a film shoot… and the monitors were pointed straight up at the sky, a couple pieces of cardboard shading it solved the problem.

Oh, I completely agree on the gloss/matte debate. But he thinks a Macbook is A-Okay otherwise, and that’s just silly for a professional photographer. His real gripe should be about the screen size, not the glossy monitor. I can’t imagine being at all satisfied with a 13 inch screen for doing anything productive in Photoshop. Hell, the Camera Raw dialog box is almost that big by itself. {ahem} But of course he’s not shooting Raw, so no biggie there. A 13 inch notebook of any finish is of no use to me. I’ve been waiting for a 20″ MBP myself, so I really don’t get the griping for a 13″ option for editing photos.
So anyone that downloaded it… try it on your PC.. there is still a rumor that it may work on standard x86 hardware… does it>???

I think OSX on PC has made a brilliant argument and justified his case.
Basically Apple backed him into a corner and he had no other option but to run a cracked OS X on his PC.
It’s similar to why some people download music off P2P networks before iTunes arrived. Because there was no other viable economic alternatives.
1: He needed a matte screen laptop around $1000 to $1200 because that’s all he can afford.
2: He needed Mac OS X because his investment in software was based on that OS.
3: He needed a Intel chip for the same reason.
4; He would be willing to buy a matte screen MacBook, even if it was a few hundred more.
So left with no legal economic recourse to solve his issue, he did what he had to do.
Laws are just rules of the game of society. Laws are based upon previous similar actions by others, so when someone faces a unknown situation they can consult the law for guidence.
Take for instance the mother who killed a rabid raccoon that was attacking her son. The law states killing animals is illegal and she could have just driven the animal away, but if the mother let the raccoon live it could have attacked another person, so she killed it while she had the chance. So where is the law for a instance like this?
In OSX on PC’s case the law fails hiim, because Apple decided to back him into a situation by discontinuing matte screen MacBooks. I’m sure he checked out al the options, checked his credit and such and found he could only afford the $1000 model..
Now if he ran XP or Vista on his new PC he would have then had to buy all new versions of software.
Apple left him high and dry. He is attempting the next best thing while he migrates to XP or Vista.

Traveling on the road is very expensive, especially food and lodging. He has to pinch everywhere. He trusted Apple to produce a reliable OS but then goes and switches their hardware he can afford to glossy screens, which I don’t care what the mac apologists say, completely sucks ass when used outside on the road.
I can just see this sort of thing happening to lots of people because of Apple LIMITED hardware choices and rapid changes in specs.
Sure a shiny screen Macbook might look nice in the store, but doesn’t translate into practical use.
There is a study somewhere where a group of people were secretly observed watching TV in a large room. One large screen was glossy and another was matte.
The matte screen got more main use. The glossy one only used in case the group spilt about what to watch. But when everyone agreed, the matte screen was used.

It doesn\’t make any sense to risk a nearly $3000 MacBook Pro when all he needed was a $1000 computer.
Accidents happen on the road, he needed a reliable, OS X based, matte screen notebook for around $1000.
This way if he dropped it, left it on the roof of his car or in a motel room it wouldn\’t be that much of a loss compared to a $3000 machine.
He would have bought a matte screen MacBook, but Apple no longer offers such a device. Since was \”tied in\” to Mac OS X with his investment in software, he had no choice but to buy a $1000 PC and run a cracked version of Mac OS X on it.
