“The eagerly-awaited Apple Computer retail store at 23 N. Santa Cruz Ave. seems likely to open in September. Glass and some stainless steel have been installed at the sidewalk level, and the stucco facade above it is nearly complete,” Alastair Dallas reports for The Los Gatos Observer.

You’ve got to be kidding me… They used GLOSSY windows?
@Chumper.
Best reply of the day!
Everyone else, shutup!
Good one, Chumper!
At least they weren’t Windows®…
I second that (third it), sure your nym should be Champer, or Trumper?
The article this links to does NOT say that it may be controvertial. Where did that come from? MDN: You even put it in the title.
Read it again, it’s right there in the title. the only difference is in the article it’s the second line instead of the title line
i live in los gatos and it might be controversial because most of the other store fronts on the street are more subdued and traditional.
I’d have thought apple would have gotten all the permissions from the local authorities so i’m sure it’ll just be some locals complaining nothing major.
As long as they have a matte option too, it shouldn’t be a problem. But leave it to Mac users to find something to bitch about anyway.
I used to live in Los Gatos. The historical commission has quite a bit of sway in development projects and they’re pretty up tight about maintaining the historical look of the entire town, especially the downtown/shopping area.
There’s nothing wrong with a city/town wanting to maintain a certain look.
I live in Pasadena, and we’re the same way – THANK GOD.
All the artsy-fartsy folks think that anything older than 2-years should be torn down.
That’s what happens when you have a 1 sentence article.
We should play along. Everyone go to their comments box, type how outraged you are over the controversy, but say nothing abut what about the Apple store is bothering you!
If you scroll down the page of the Los Gatos article and click on the Related Article “Apple Store Progress Report (5/16/07)”, you’ll see what the controversy is.
“It is not clear that everyone connected with approving the Apple Store project realized that the existing facade would be ripped away. The store, just north of Andale Taqueria, is in a designated historic district. Likewise, did they know that a 14′ high portion of the 30′ facade would be stainless steel and glass with a 3′-2″ glowing white apple in the midst of the Victorian charm?”
And now brave men and women will have to fight the horrors of change and contrasting tastes in architecture. Ironically, the bronze statues honoring the Style Wars dead will never get approval.
Yeah, I guess the Victorians didn’t like it when that first ankle was shown in public. The HORROR.
Downtown Los Gatos is one of the few small downtowns with a lot of local stores and fairly intact style of architecture. This store’s style will be pointed to as the beginning of the end of Los Gatos.
Love Apple products. But there is a time and place. After this glaring breach of historical standards I think we can expect a nice big Disney store front soon.
Burlingame, up the Peninsula, also used to be a very small town street. Now it is 90% big chains (yawn) and yeah, an Apple store. I don’t shop there anymore. Frankly, what the chains are doing to Main Street is worse than what some claim Walmart is doing. With chains on Main Streets where can small owner-run stores go and afford rents?
And when the economy turns, there will be tumbleweeds blowing up the streets of these new outside Malls.
Downtown Los Gatos is/was well on its way to corporate ownership before the apple store went in
from memory: Gap, Kids Gap, Banana Republic, Sur La Table, Williams Sonoma, Borders, Cold Stone Creamery, Sharper Image – Just because none of them do Stainless Steel as part of their corporate identity doesn’t make them fit in that much better…
all within a 1 – 1.5 blocks of the apple store
