RUMOR: Apple preps major iPhone software updates

Apple is preparing to introduce a slew of new capabilities and features to iPhone via software updates, a post on PDA Live.com claims. The post is based upon inside info from an Apple employee

Rumored additions to iPhone include a file browser similar to Leopard Finder, Disk Mode, Spotlight search, special version of iWork, widescreen keyboard for all apps, Clipboard with select, copy, paste, iChat, “real” third-party app support, ringtones, and more.

MacDailyNews Note: This is an unconfirmed rumor. It also sounds like most every iPhone users’ wish list. We’ll leave it up to you to decide if that helps support or discount this rumor. The best we can offer (and it isn’t much): it’s fairly probable that at least one of the items on this laundry list will come true as Apple has already stated that iPhone (and Apple TV) would gain features and capabilities via free software updates over time.

  1. All the bugs with software or missing app features can be easily fixed with a software update. What is most disappointing to me, though, was that Apple did not build a standard headphone jack in the iPhone, so that it is impossible for me to plug it into my car’s stereo without using the huge adapter sold in stores that sticks out of the phone like an antenna of satellite phones of the early nineties. It is plain ugly and completely disappointing of Apple, who concern themselves over the aesthetic beauty of their products. What gives? Could they not have made it slightly less difficult, or offered at least a smaller adapter?

  2. Not sure I trust any of this but who knows. In regards to Steve firmly stating no stand-alone apps – didn’t he really just say no SDK for everyone? It is quite possible that Apple hand-picked 1 or 2 companies to develop some apps for the iphone under Apple’s guidance/control. At least that is what I would like to see happen.

  3. Haven’t there been a lot of complaints over the years of people screwing up their headphone jacks by keeping headphones in while keeping ipods in pockets? I assume this is an attempt to prevent this sort of damage. However, it does stink that so many headphones no longer work without an adaptor.

  4. Will Apple charge for this? They “had” to charge $1.99 for the AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler. Likewise, this wishlist is software above & beyond what anyone was promised with their purchase, and the inept accountants have found it unthinkable to associate development costs with free updates.

  5. no matter what software they put at the start – people would find shortcomings.
Now they have a better idea and can make a splash and get some more media attention – so makes perfect sense that they will introduce softwate update soon.

  6. Apple is using a different accounting scheme with iPhone and apple TV so that they don’t get stuck having to charge for these updates. They are recording the revenue over a certain period of time or something like that. So no, they won’t have to charge a small amount for these updates.

  7. As previously noted, Apple is accounting for iPhone sales revenue over a two-year period. This more or less neatly solves the can of worms opened by SAB 101 and allows them to provide updates free of charge without running up against SEC regulations.

  8. This is almost completely off subject, but I just noticed that mojits.com is now showing an iWeathr app like the Radar in Motion widget. From my perspective that’s something to get excited about.

  9. Simply too good to be true…even for Åpple. At the same time…they showed a working model in January…seven months is a long time to at least get a few of these features ready. It would be nice to see the Verizon and Blackberry CEO’s face with a dream upgrade like that.

  10. “Also mail will see an upgrade so you can add accounts without doing so through itunes.”

This statement basically discounts the entire post, considering you can already do this. It points to the ignorance of the poster.
