Bill Gates no longer world’s richest man

“Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim is the world’s richest man, worth an estimated $US67.8 billion, after overtaking Microsoft Corp founder Bill Gates, according to a respected tracker of Mexican financial wealth today,” The Herald Sun reports.

“A 27-percent surge in the share price of America Movil, Latin America’s largest mobile phone operator controlled by Mr Slim, from March to June made him close to $US8.6 billion wealthier than Mr Gates, said Eduardo Garcia in Sentido Comun, the online financial publication he founded,” The Herald Sun reports. “Mr Garcia estimated that Mr Gates was worth $US59.2 billion.”

“The Mexican billionaire has also made some savvy stock picks. In 1997, he bought about three percent of Apple Computer at 17 dollars a share shortly before the company launched its hit iMac computer. Twelve months later, Apple’s shares topped $100,” AFP reports.

  1. HAHA!

    Bill you looooooooooosssssssssseeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrr!

What’s it like not being the top dog anymore?

Well, Microsoft has’nt been he top dog for 20+ years – but that’s another story…

  2. No wonder we pay so much for cell service here in Mexico, I guy controls #1 and # 2

#1 in Mexico TelCell (part of Telmex) and #2 Movil

it cost 26 cents a minute to call Cancun, 30 miles away, and 10 cents a minute to call a local number

  3. Kind of a lame MDN, piece. You can harp on Gates all you want for what Microsoft has done to the computing world, but he has done loads more than any of us have for humanitarian causes. And probably a lot more than Mr. Slim.

  4. Let me ‘splain it to you M…You see, Mr. Gates is a noted personality in the Computer Software industry. Apple (Mac) is also involved in this industry. In fact, the two are top competitors with each other. So, you see M, developments involving Mr. Gates can be of interest to many of those who are interested in Mac news. But hey! the good news is you don’t have to click on every story that appears on MDN! That’s right, you can actually choose to read only those stories that appeal to your interests! Hope I’ve helped sort things out for ya! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  5. Sadly, Mr. Slim is no more endearing than Mr. Gates, and even suggested that giving away a large fortune to help the world (as in Mr. Gates and Mr. Buffett’s philanthropy) was foolhardy.

  6. but he (Gates) has done loads more than any of us have for humanitarian causes….

What a pile of ****, trickling money into “humanitarian causes” after taking billions from people with such methods as billing schools for number of computers (including Macintosh models). Oh yeah, the guy just HAS to be admired.

  7. Where’s the Mac news in this?

M, you idiot, this site keeps tabs on the story arc of all thing Apple. Like many a good yarn, there are villains involved, and the Arch Villian, the head of the evil counter organization, the Anti-Jobs- is Bill Gates. News about him is therefore a part of the Apple story and will be fodder for the site. If you don’t like it, skip the post, skip the site, or start your own website. Nitwit.

  8. He may be “Latin America’s largest mobile phone operator” but if he doesn’t get the iPhone contract from Apple, that may not last for long.

BTW – I wouldn’t mind being the 2nd richest man in the world. I’d even settle for being able to use the word “rich” and my name in the same sentence. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

At least I love my job.

  9. If you thought that Gates made his money through an illegal monopoly, this guy makes him look like mother Teresa. What’s not mentioned in the article is how Carlos made his money. It all started with illegal insider trading in the Mexican stock market. Then he bought some mining facilities, then during the Carlos Salinas presidential term, Telefonos de Mexico got privatized, guess who was granted a favorable monopolistic deal. Funny, my uncle was just talking about how this guy was already narrowing the wealth gap with Gates, I thought it would take a bit longer thou. To amass this amount of wealth you have to step on someone feet.

  10. I dunno Mac-Nugget.
One man’s stock tip is another’s insider trading. So because he bought mining facilities he’s a criminal?

You make him sound like a major shrewd player, not necessarily a bad guy.

Gates made one decision that cause him to become wealthy, the decision to lease DOS to IBM. Doesn’t make him evil, makes IBM stupid.

  11. @The Other Steve
You just don’t know what this guy owns. Have you walked in to a CompUSA. He owns them. His wealth is diversified so much that he could care less if he gets the exclusive with Apple. Besides, it’s the other way around, Apple needs the deal with him to sell the iPhone to Latin America.
