iWork ‘07 to debut at WWDC?

MacTechNews.de is reporting about a delay in the delivery of iWork ’06 which may signal that the release of iWork ’07 is imminent.

MacTechNews.de reports that a client recieved an email from Apple announcing a new delivery date of June 12 and speculates that iWork ’07 – possibly with a spreadsheet app – may launch at WWDC 2007, in order to adapt certain functions to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

  1. This would be good news if Apple has done some SERIOUS work on Pages.

I’d been hoping that Pages ’06 would finally allow me abandon AppleWorks, but it really felt more like a SLOW beta than a finished product. The interface is pretty klunky, slow and convoluted… NOT very Apple-like! So until those issues are addressed, I’ll stick with AppleWorks. I only use it for time sheets and invoicing, but still…

MDN Magic Word: Pages CLEARLY needs some work!

  2. I wrote my last novel in Pages – had some learning to do. My current novel, also written in Pages seems much more intuitive, maybe it’s the APP, maybe me.

I’m looking forward to both iWork ’07, and iLife ’07.

    Bring it on, AAPL!

  3. I’ve just done a quick translation; here it is:-

Many were very surprised that there wasn’t a new version of Apple iWork in January at the Mac World Expo, as was the case in previous years.
We have just been informed by e-mail, that the delivery of iWork 06 has been rescheduled. A lady customer should have received her delivery about now, but she’s just heard that she will have to wait. This wouldn’t normally be anything out-of-the way if the WWDC wasn’t about to begin. Her new delivery date is June 12, the day after Steve Jobs’ Keynote. This could be interpreted as an indication that a new version of iWork is imminent.
Recent rumours have suggested that Apple is planning new spreadsheet software. This would be somewhat unusual at this point, as the WWDC is a developers conference where mostly products for the profi or developer market are introduced. It’s possible though that Apple iWork 07 has been delayed for the WWDC so that certain features could be synchronized with Mac OS X Leopard. Theoretically, certain functions in iWork 07 could have given away too much about new features in Leopard, which Apple, of course, would have wanted to avoid.

  4. 1a. iWork with improved Pages
    1b. iWork with improved Keynote
    1c. iWork with improved spreadsheet
    2a. Improved iMacs (20-, 24-, and 26-inch)
    2b. Improved iMacs (Core 2 Duo E6700, E6600, and/or E6400)
2c. Improved iMacs (800 to 1066 MHz bus)
3a. Newly designed expensive cinema displays (20-, 24-, and 30-inch)
    3b. Less expensive cinema displays
    3c. Swiveling cinema displays

  5. It seems strange to me that Apple will release new versions of iWork and iLife half way through the year and still call them ’07.

Furthermore, I thought the reason that they weren’t launched in January was because there was functionality that would tie in with features only availabe in Leopard.. Leopard’s not coming till October, why would iWork and iLife be released now?

  6. If it really is going to be released shortly, maybe the time has come to change the naming convention.

Instead of linking iWork and iLife versions to the year, it might make more sense to either link it to the latest OS name, or to name it independently.

  7. Tricky call…

On the one hand, I like to reiterate Developers Conference. So we’re talking about stuff that is of interest to Developers. A new iLife or iWork doesn’t really fit the bill here.

However, if there are Leopard-only features, I could see a new iLife or iWork being shown after Leopard. It might make an entertaining segue (“So you’ve seen all these features. Let’s show you how you might use them in your apps by showing how we’re using them in ours…”)

  8. > I thought the reason it was delayed was because iLife/iWork ’07 relied on features in Leopard

I never heard that as anything more than a rumor. It doesn’t even make sense. Just because Leopard is released, it doesn’t mean every person with Tiger is going to immediately upgrade. A lot of Mac users don’t automatically upgrade to the latest and greatest on Day One (or ever – until they buy a new Mac). So it doesn’t make sense that a standalone software package would rely on features in Leopard.

I have a feeling that Apple will drop the “year” designation for software packages. It’s very Microsoft. Let’s just give a version number like everything else Apple releases. We don’t have iTunes 2007 or QuickTime 2007 or Mac OS X 2007.

  9. In my opinion it has some reason to give now a new iWork. Not because only for the Mac but also for the iPhone. It would not surprise me that if we purchase the new iWork maybe all its apps could go to the iPhone also with simplified features (maybe readers and some edit possible) to challenge the market with some more PDA features. With this the iPhone can capture more interested people.
The iLife makes sense only on Mac and that’s why some more waiting for the Leopard release. Newer iWork can has double-life for Apple and maybe an even more selling reason: For both your Mac and iPhone!

  10. I ordered a base 17″ MBP on May 25th. It originally showed an expected delivery date of May 27th, but then changed to June1-5 for what turned out to be their update. I also had iLife 06 preinstalled. Even after the update, my expected delivery date has been pushed back to June 18th. It could be a supply issue, but then again it could be an iLife update.
