CoolTechZone: ‘Apple iPhone nothing more than a temporary novelty that will eventually wear off’

Apple Store“I have to ask one question from Apple, if I may. What’s up with the sheer arrogance in regards to iPhone? Yeah, you know what I’m talking about. The lack of presence at last week’s CTIA tradeshow was purely disgusting and an insult to the entire industry. Sure, I guess I can understand the magical feel you are going for, Steve Jobs style, but to barely showoff the iPhone at the wireless industry’s largest tradeshow was downright pathetic,” Gundeep Hora, CoolTechZone’s Editor-in-Chief, writes.

Hora writes, “It’s great that you are quite possibly the only company to pull off something like this successfully, but it doesn’t make it any less annoying. Not to mention, Jobs, didn’t your PR people recommend you to show off the iPhone at CTIA? Personally, I wouldn’t be too arrogant at this point, especially considering the fact that the iPhone is going to be nothing more than a temporary novelty that will eventually wear off.”

“Had you let the industry (press, analysts and competitors) experience the iPhone throughout CTIA, maybe you may have realized the idiocy behind the $599 price tag, and the phone’s lack of usefulness. Clearly, it’s not designed for business users, and very few average consumers, mainly teenagers (the seemingly obvious target market of the iPhone), will have the budget to invest in a ludicrously priced cell phone,” Hora writes.

Waaa! Apple didn’t show up at a show featuring outmoded tech that suddenly looks hopelessly dated! Apple insulted the entire wireless industry! Waaa!

  1. I think it is actually amusing that Apple doesn’t feel that they need to be at this show. Heck! What extra press do they possibly need right now? They are going to sell by the zillions when it launches.

  2. How does this person know how useful it is or isn’t? The thing wasn’t demonstrated at the largest industry show! You can’t make sweeping judgements as if you know what you’re talking about then moan about not having seen it. Unless you’re an internet hack of course.

  3. Wait until it comes out weenie boy, then you can finger it all you want. This guy talks about being arrogant, pathetic and disgusting. He should be looking inward. He’s as shrill as my two year old girl, but she’s a lot easier to forgive. A$$hole doesn’t understand that the purpose of those shows is to perpetuate the status quo of the industry, which sucks. Apple wants no part of it. This was made clear @ the introduction of the iPhone.

  4. Gman hit the nail on the head. These hacks and flacks are used to getting the freebies from the other guys to play with. Being left out drives them nuts. What’s the point of being a tech writer if you don’t get the gadgets to play with before everyone else. Being the kid stuck outside the candy store looking in the window is a new experience for these bozos.

  5. Took a look at the site and read one of the Blackberry reviews.

I think this is a blogger who sells link space. That means they generate funds by making lots of noise and by saying great things of the phones that they review (paid for?? ). So, Apple did not let you review a phone, wahhh wahhhh, name calling will get you nowhere.

  6. Trade shows are designed businesses to hook up with other businesses. Apple already has all the hookups it wants right now. Without a finished product, and the iPhone is not yet finished, Apple’s appearance at this show would have been counter productive. This guy, and all the other whiners, are pissed because the iPhone was the only reason they made the trip to the show this year.

  7. Didn’t they say the car, talkies, TV, etc were all novelties that would wear off? Hmm, I would say the iPhone is in very good, longstanding company.

BTW-teenagers?!?! I am a long way from being a teenager and I really really want an iPhone – but I resolved to make myself wait until 2G (I want a new MacBook Pro this year). whether or not I keep that resolution is entirely up for debate.

MW: Second, I would love to buy an iPhone the second it is available

  8. It’s a lot like the fact that Apple doesn’t make a presence at E3 or most of the other Expos (save the NAB which they frequently use to appeal directly to the industry)! They march to their own drum and don’t feel the need to pander to everyone that organizes a gathering of potential purchasers.

  9. Sometimes the things that make you want them the most are the things you can’t immediately have. Yeah the whole bit about not show it off might be maddening, but think of it as foreplay. Half of what makes sex great is good foreplay. Everything else just sort of “comes” naturally into place.

  10. Vendors show up at CTIA to sell their phones to Telcos. They get to show off their new wares to Telcos from all over the planet in one place at one time.

    What could be better?

Apple has Telcos coming to Cupertino to beg Apple to let them carry the iPhone under Apple’s conditions and to offer to share their iPhone revenues with Apple.

Mohammed does not need to go to the mountain when the mountain is coming to Mohammed.

No need for arrogance CoolTechZone. Not conceited, convinced.

  11. Why are these people so surprised that Apple doesn’t play by the set of rules that they adhere to? For that matter do we want Apple to play by the rules? Would we have many of the technologies that we take for granted if Apple went with conventional wisdom? Apple is a loner that does its own thing and thank goodness for that. I don’t even want to know where the technology industry today would be today if Apple played by the rules of other companies.

  12. It seems so funny that all of these nay sayers are balking at the price. I can remember about 4 years ago another company that sold just a standard P.O.S phone called the RAZR for $599 w/2 Year contract, and Cingular couldn’t keep that phone on the shelves. It’s amazing how soon people like Hora forget.

  13. HaHaHa What a self important Wanker
“it’s not designed for business users”…. Well we can tell right there what kind of business cred Mr Gundeep “Editor-in-chief” Hora has.
Where does MDN find these people?
Do you make them up ?

  14. Almost every teenager I know (and I know a great many) has:

    An iPod,
An Xbox, PS3, PSP, Wii, or all of these,
    A computer,
    Money to party every weekend.

Trust me, they will find a way to buy an iPhone. All of them.

    -c

  15. Here is the REAL reason Apple wasn’t there:

From the day of the announcement, the shell-shocked industry tried to downplay the iPhone with statements like, “Yeah, we’ll have a $200 copy that does the same thing in 3 weeks”

Why would Apple give the industry more time to TRY and COPY the iPhone’s features?!?!

These guys are desperate to try and reverse engineer HALF of the iPhone’s features (Look at the CRAP MS is trying: http://www.macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/microsoft_tries_to_outdo_apple_iphone_with_new_zenzui_mobile_ui/ ) It’s funny and pathetic.

Anyone angry at Apple is just upset that it will take them longer to rip off REAL innovative ideas.

MW: schools: Apple SCHOOLS the industry again!

  16. Hora is right – the novelty will eventually wear off. Probably as soon as version 2 of the iPhone is released.

Agree with iScott – I know where NOT to go for tech news.

My wife and I are each getting an iPhone. Fortunately we’re already with Cingular. And for what it is worth, we have not had any problems with Cingular. I realize this may not be true for everyone – but we’re very pleased with Cingular (ATT)and are looking forward to the iPhone. (Oh and new monitors from Apple too.)

    Peace.

  17. HA! What a self-important ass! So Apple has insulted the ENTIRE INDUSTRY!?! Now they’ll never get invited to any parties 🙁

Gundeep needs to pull his head out of his ass and take a look around. The iPhone is going to rock the “entire industry”. Poor old Gundeep might just be the last to know.

  18. iPhone will quickly get outdated and is mostly a fad…

Lets see…. isn’t that EVERY phone on the mareket?!

Evidently, now it is just for iPhone, but the latest Chocolate, Razor and BlackBerry look set to stand the test of time.

    A. Don’t click and give this guy hits.
    B. Watch him look really, really, dumb come June – five-years from now.
    C. Watch this guy buy an iPhone and love it.

  19. Not that it really matters, but “Hora” in my language means someone (usually a female) who does certain things for money. Maybe kind of fits this guy ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  20. Gundeep Hora,

    You ignorant Gundeep!!!

Perhaps Apple felt that it would be better to have a product that was shipping before being in your sacred trade show CTIA.

Was it not better to have the CEO of AT&T touting it or is he just wasting
his time with a “Temporary novelty that will eventually wear off.”

The FCC Chairman might differ with you as well.

But you are the Great Gundeep of the award winning CoolTechZone
    web site are you not?

Lets just see what happens to your beloved CTIA show after June.
I wager the new name will be MacWorld Wireless.

    Just a great gundeep thought.

  21. My email to Gundeep:

I’d like to ask a question, too, if I may. What’s the point of CTIA tradeshow? Well, according to their website it’s “to exchange ideas, create partnerships and collaborate to bring wireless telecommunications to new heights.”

Where in there does it say, “let every Tom, Dick and Harry play with your stuff?” I think you’ve jumped the shark Gundeep. And why should Apple, or anyone, have to appease the great Gundeep, God and Gatekeeper of Wireless in order to compete in the marketplace? Paradigms are bad for technology, bad for creativity and bad for consumers. You should Think Different, Gundeep. Really.

  22. I think iPhone has been hard to see for three reasons. 1. It isn’t finished – maiinly because of the integration with ATT and ironing out some of the features (therefore they don’t want to be there to be asked too many questions); 2. They don’t want people to copy it – Apple is becoming wise to the successful knockoffs out there, they don’t want the knockoffs to beat them to the punch on either iPhone or Leopard; 3. They want the actual release to be news. If they tell everything now and let it appear to be an established deal, it won’t have the news worthy impact that today’s viewing market craves!

And by the way, isn’t Gundeep Hora being just a wee bit arrogant in claiming to speak for an entire industry? I mean, I know that CoolTechZone is right up there with the Wall Street Journal and all, but still.

MDN Magic Word “full” as in everybody is full of something…

  23. I just did some checking:

An 8GB iPod Nano costs US$249. A Blackberry 8800 (from Cingular) costs US$349.99 with a two-year contract. Just doing the math to buy both of those devices would cost me US$598.99.

How much does an 8GB iPhone cost? $599.

The shame is that CoolTechZone’s editor is judging the iPhone against other “smartphones” with anemic media capabilities. Unlike other smartphones, the iPhone has a full feature set without compromising functionality.

A lot of things deserve to be iCal’d but this article belongs in the FUD Hall of Fame.

  24. Who paid him for this hatchet job? Did cooltechzone say hey
we sure would like some hits to show our advertisers that we truly do
get eyeballs, lets say something untrue and stupid about the iPhones and drive them Mac nuts wild.

Tell this Palm and Rim licking boy to hold on to his beaded car seat
and wait for the storm which is the iPhone.

    Take no prisoners Steve…

    Just a uncooltechzone thought

  26. M.X.N.T.4.1

You can’t make sweeping judgements as if you know what you’re talking about then moan about not having seen it.

Oh, but we know that you can! More than half of the rants against the iPhone, to this point, written by supposed “tech” writers, have them blathering on about things Steve addressed in the Keynote. All they had to do was watch to get the information and not look like an ass.

But nooooooooo, that was too difficult.

Apparently ranting and raving like an ass about a topic you are uninformed about is not just for Usenet anymore. 😀

  27. Well, Apple apparently had a reason to not make a big scene at this trade show. I don’t think they were trying to make a statement or piss people off by not going/making a bigger scene but there was a marketing scheme behind it. Perhaps more suspense maybe? I don’t know, I’m not in the marketing field.

However, I do find this comment quite funny:
“Personally, I wouldn’t be too arrogant at this point, especially considering the fact that the iPhone is going to be nothing more than a temporary novelty that will eventually wear off.”

I seem to remember a time, years ago, when people thought the same thing about the Ipod. I now see more people with Ipods than I see without Ipods. Now, I’m not saying I think the Iphone will be as good as a product for Apple as the Ipod was/is but it’s not going to be a bust 3 years from now either.

  28. I like this line…

The lack of presence at last week’s CTIA tradeshow was purely disgusting and an insult to the entire industry.

It can even be applied to this show…

The lack of presence at any CES tradeshow is purely disgusting and an insult to the entire industry.

This is just another one of the many things I love about Apple. There’s Apple, then there’s the rest of them. Apple isn’t about rubbing shoulders with mediocrity. Furthermore, another message to this industry might be this…

The lack of innovation or consumer focus in mobile phone offerings is purely disgusting and an insult to the entire industry.

Who wants to be a part of that?

  29. This explains alot. I just found Gundeep’s post on Chris Pirillo’s blog.

He is only 18 years old….

  32. Unlike most corporations, Apple lives in a glass house. They can’t file for a trademark in Tuvalu without someone noticing.

There are a lot of people who know that wireless devices have to have FCC approval, and that the process is public, so it was very probable that some fanboy was monitoring the FCC for the iPhone.

Apple wasn’t arrogant, they were put into a position where they had to walk a tightrope between announcing a product they couldn’t legally offer for sale on the one hand and having the FCC do their product announcement on the other.

Would they have preferred to have the product announcement after it was legal to sell it? I don’t know, but I do know that their hand was forced.

  33. This incident reminds me of the scene in the movie “Perfect Storm” where the stud goes upstairs to bed the babe, while the losers downstairs get to listen to the creaking springs and the squeals of orgasm. Where would you rather be — getting laid or drinking with the guys? Jealous bastards.

Who wants to be a part of that? Why does Apple have to play by a crappy industry’s rules?

  35. Who’s this guy? I work in the enterprise IT and never heard of him. Based on his whining I can already ascertain his personality. He’s another “industry analyst” who thinks the products he monitors will rise and fall on his perception. What a joke!

Dvorak doesn’t get it either (Gartner much less). I don’t care what you think, I’m getting an iPhone. My wife will probably have an iPhone, and my kids (when the prices come down with other models and Cingular offers product replacement insurance) will probably have iPhones or some iteration of an iPhone as well. Gundeep, you’re either a troll trying to get more click through revenue for your site (I’m sorry I went there in the first place) or you’re having delusions of granduer concerning your own grasp of the market. Apparently, he’s never really seen what people pay for Blackberry’s or Palm devices that really work. Having to work with these things everyday, I know what the real cost is and if the iPhone even does half of what Job’s demoed, it would be a bargain compaired to these other devices.

If it’s not such a big deal, stop making it one.

    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cheese” style=”border:0;” />

  36. You’re Gundeep in your own shit. Shut the fuck up and get a brain. If you had any marketing savvy you would know that this thing will sell millions. And guess what? If you think Apple is stupid enough to forget about Exchange integration, forget it. By the time the iPhone reaches market it will have that functionality.

Is that a novelty item, ASSHOLE??

  37. ” fact that the iPhone is going to be nothing more than a temporary novelty that will eventually wear off.”

Sorry but not if  has as many patents as Steve made seem that they had and he enforces them. Not one cell manufaturer will be able to copy the services that the iphone has. Besides they couldn’t think of this stuff before , so expect nothing new from them as they spend most of their time in court.

This guy contadicts himself, seems he can’t remember what he wrote before. Just another guy looking for hits.

bye bye lard a$$….. HARDHAT, HARDHAT.

  38. “Not that it really matters, but “Hora” in my language means someone (usually a female) who does certain things for money. Maybe kind of fits this guy

In my language Themotie means a person of indeterminate gender.

  39. Apple didn’t show up at CES either. How “arrogant”!

Thanks, Gundeep Hora, for yet another bit if free publicity for iPhone. That was such a stupid rant, it will make more people want to check out what all the “novelty” is about. If it was posted yesterday, I would have thought it was meant as an April Fool’s joke.

  40. Besides they couldn’t think of this stuff before , so expect nothing new from them as they spend most of their time in court.

A good point. Certain tech elements are falling all over themselves to pretend the iPhone has no compelling features, yet if it’s feature set is so pedestrian, why has no manufacturer offered the seamless OS integration, multitouch interface, true web browsing and full MP3 functionality?

They just can’t. As long as the industries associated with data, it’s presentation and access to same try to ape Microsoft, there will be no room for innovation and certainly no revolutionary ideas.

  41. Apple received more press for 30 seconds of iPhone with AT&T’s CEO than all of the other new and coming phones combined.

Apparently this guy needs to learn a little about marketing and performing – always leave ’em wanting more!

  42. MDN take is dead on, BUT they left out that Apple did the other phone manufacturers a favor by not showing up.

The way it sits now, they have 2-2.5 months to sell their outdated ancient crap technology. Had Apple shown up in force, they other vendors/ manufacturers would have had a SERIOUS problem moving their stuff. Apple showed a little mercy by giving them another 2 months.
