“We have just gotten an anonymous tip from a source that indicates that Apple is planning a special event on February 20 to introduce Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), iLife ‘07 and iWork ‘07 as well as updated Mac Pros,” Apple Recon reports.
Apple Recon reports, “Mac Pros will be available immediately with a free upgrade to 10.5 when it ships, and the ship date for 10.5 will be confirmed for 3/24/07 as we have been predicting for quite some time now. There is some speculation that we may see a week earlier or later for this event, depending on the status of Leopard, but this is the most likely date which is being planned (by this time, Leopard’s new interface will be complete and the OS will be finishing up testing). What better way to demo Leopard than with a brand new 8-core Mac Pro?”
Full RUMOR here.
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Readers “Josh” and “RadDoc” for the heads up.]
This is a rumor report. We have heard nothing about an upcoming Apple Special Event on or around February 20th.
Macnut222,
Exactly what I was about to say. Apple Recon???
No wide screen for you until Xmas. Sorry.Too good of a product to waste
outside of the holiday feeding frenzy/buzz that will be created when the REAL vid iPod comes out. It will KO the Zune.
There was a rumor about the LED MacBook Pro a few days ago so this Special Event could be its debut; it is possible that with a new screen there would be a new design for this model. The Mac Pros are overdue for an update but if it is a simple processor upgrade the announcement could be made on Apple’s website. Who knows at what stage of development OS X 10.5 could be but it is not impossible for Apple to release it early.
A full screen iPod is like an iPhone without the phone and internet features. This would be attractive to users who do not wish to buy a new phone
On the other hand, a video iPod with wireless internet and NO PHONE could have iChat…
Doubt if iChat will comebefore the iPhone’s release.
How bout this? This possible special event is to put on full display the amazing “secret feature” of Leopard, which i’ve almost completely convinced myself is…Multi-Touch! Why would Apple keep this amazing new(ish) interface completely in the iPhone/probably on the new iPod? People keep saying a tablet Mac, which would be part of it, but why not convert every display Apple sells into a Multi-Touch display, including iMacs, Cinema Displays, and all notebooks, and potentially (in the long-view) ditching the mouse completely? If you’ve seen the video of Jeff Han showing off some of the cool things Multi-Touch can do, and then you’ve seen Multi-Touch in the iPhone, you’ve gotta be wondering when Apple will start using Multi-Touch in computers. Why not right away? And I know a lot of people wanna talk about that SuperBowl ad being for the new iPod, possibly with the Beatles contract, but here’s the thing: iPod creates its own press. Just look at the iPhone. Because of the iPod, people paid more attention (a lot more attention) to the MacWorld keynote on the iPhone than they did to the biggest consumer electronics display in the world. So why would Apple waste that much money on advertising a product that will sell itself without a billion dollar commercial? Get the word out on the new Mac interface, cause otherwise, word would take a while to filter down. Then, on the possible event on the 20th, they go into detail on everything Leopard. I could be wrong, but it just kinda makes sense to me. Anyone agree?
MW: “certain”-I’m almost certain I’m right on this.
With Quad Xeon CPUs & it’s own Fuel Cell.
You heard it here first…
Crabs, I’m not sure that I agree, but I certainly hope you’re right. Is multi-touch software or hardware based? Can an existing iMac be converted by just using a software upgrade? Not sure but it would be an amazing achievement if so.
I used to go to Apple Recon back in the 1990s to read their Mac boosting info. I stopped when the idiots took over the good ship Apple after Captain Steve was forced to walk the plank by the mutineers. I do not know their current performance on getting real information on Apple.
Unfortunately, I’m pretty sure Multi-Touch is hardware based, so very sadly, if we wanted our Leopard machines to use Multi-Touch instead of point-and-click, we’d probably have to upgrade the whole computer for iMacs or notebooks, or just the displays for Mac Minis and Mac Pros
Or, maybe, until they can make a full conversion to Multi-Touch displays, they produce a peripheral, about the size of an iPhone, but all it is is a Multi-Touch display that you use to control your computer. So it’s a gradiated transition rather than a sudden one that immediately requires all users to spend hundreds or probably thousands of dollars, but eventually leads to a full Multi-Touch GUI. I’m bettin on it. (And hopin for it)
The wide-screen touch-screen “video” iPod will not happen before the release of iPhone. It would be nice, but it does not seem feasible or logical. Apple needs the time until June to perfect the interface and ramp up production for iPhone. Just because Apple had five or six working prototypes of iPhone at MacWorld Expo, it does not mean Apple can start cranking out millions of similarly equipped iPods today (or in February).
Most likely scenario. Focus development and marketing on release of iPhone in June. It’s been announced; it would be a huge disappointment (and embarrassment) if Apple misses the date, or if initial sales are lower than expected because consumers are distracted by the “true” video iPod.
Two or three months later, the new iPod is released with its own fanfare, in time to catch students going back to school and to build up to the holidays.
MDN, a catalyst for dreams and fantasies. A person can live weeks without food, a few days without water, but nary a second without hope. I have not been disappointed with what Apple delivers, but I have always been impatient. Therein lies the hope. I wait with credit card in hand.
Crabs,
I think a touch-screen interface is coming – but it will be OS 11. To be released in 2011. “Our OS goes to 11!”
Whoa, I just watched that Jeff Han guy on YouTube. That s*** is amazing! And if Apple have that stuff on board, in patent or whatever, we’re in for a serious ride.
Also, it shows how Apple ultimately will not be affected by OSX virtualization on PC. Apple hardware will be required.
Feb 20th would be great for new MBP’s – the government should have payed me back by then for that f**king interest-free loan I’ve given them all through 2006.
@Linux Guy and Mac Prodigal Son: “… I used to go to Apple Recon back in the 1990s to read their Mac boosting info”.
I used to read Apple Recon when it was run by Robert Morgan. he was suggesting APPL were a terrific buy in the days when they looked like going bust. I put it down to stock ramping but after a while I became a convert and climbed aboard. The rest as they say is history….
I still want my 12″ MBP…need it by August at the latest. This would be nice…
The event is to announce Macs with Vista pre-loaded, among other things.
I’m ready for that 20″ MBP, Apple. =) Could you be introducing it on the 20th? I’m rapt with anticipation! And I’m in a good mood because my new Quad 2.66 was waiting on my desk when I got to work this morning. ^_^
