Hitwise: Apple ‘iPhone’ search volume already greater than ‘iPod’

“Since Steve Jobs’ announcement of the iPhone at Macworld two weeks ago, Internet users have been flocking online to find out more information. For the week ending 1/13/07, the share of searches for ‘iphone’ was greater than the weekly share of searches for ‘ipod’ at any time during 2006. The week ending 1/20/07 still showed a greater volume of searches for ‘iphone’ versus ‘ipod.’ This early surge in interest should indicate a rosy future for the iPhone when it becomes available in later in the year. Interestingly, the volume of searches for ‘ipod’ peaked during the last week of the year, rather than before Christmas as one would expect,” LeeAnn Prescott, Research Director for Hitwise, blogs.

The news takes some time to dissipate into the general population. We

aren’t ALL geeks waiting on our tiptoes for the next keynote to tell us

what our future is. I’m not mocking the gal, it just seems obvious to me.

All those disappointed kids who got a Zune for Christmas, I guess.

She forgot that most people buying an iPod for someone else already know about the product, so why look it up; and then after Xmas, people are Googling to find new 3rd party bits, how-to’s, troubleshooting, etc.

And of course iPhone searches are going to go through the roof following the announcement. So what? (in relation to iPod, I mean). There was no new iPod announcement, and people already know what iPod is. But they hear about this thing called iPhone and they want to find out.

This lady needs a reality check.

Now I have an interesting tid-bit to add, kist like Ms. Prescott – something I have noticed. When it’s raining, more people are going to buy umbrellas! OMG! It’s true. Remember you read it here first, on our own beloved MDN.

Well duh. All those people who got an iPod for Christmas googled for iPod accessories, user help and other info. Not that surprising.

  5. Yes, they make lovely routers like the one I have. It looks like a plastic bug that might live in a George Lucas film. You know, right next to an AT-AT or something. And it’s *blue*! I can’t really complain about my WRT54G, but I would never line up in the middle of the night for one. The Cisco iPhone was not released to be a successful product, it was released to give Cisco a foot to kick Apple with.
