Enderle: Apple’s iPhone is going to do very well

Apple finally put to rest months of speculation by announcing the iPhone today. “I think the iPhone’s going to do very well,” says The Enderle Group’s principal (and only, unless you count his wife) analyst Rob Enderle. “Done right, this could shoot through the cell phone market rather nicely,” he says.

Enderle thinks there will be “some background drama” between Apple and Cisco over the “iPhone” name (see related article below). In typical ludicrous fashion, Enderle describes URGE and Rhapsody as “more advanced” services than Apple’s iTunes Store.

Enderle also thinks “Apple TV” is a better brand for the product than “iTV.” Regarding Apple TV’s potential, “It’s all about content,” Endlere says (even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes).

Enderle spoke with MarketWatch’s Tracy Johnke via a cell phone that can’t hold a candle to Apple’s iPhone.

  1. People are not understanding what they saw.
Ya want it spelled out for you?
the iPhone will sell millions and millions and millions of copies of OS X to people who have never experienced it before, and then they will wonder how the OS X experience is on a computer, and they’ll buy an iMac or a Mini.

This is nothing short of a revolution. There isn’t even a reason to talk about the horrid Zune anymore. It makes that MS new operating system stale news, and before it even launches.

Some people just can’t see the big picture. “Steve was stupid to pick a carrier that has poor service in my neighborhood.”

Proves you just don’t get it!

  2. I think we’ll see something completely backward in the mobile phone industry with the iphone. Verizon, arguably the leader right now, is banking on a good network and crappy (relative to the iphone) phones. Cingular now has an amazing device and a poor network. I see Cingular upping the anty with their network (holy crap, how much data are they going to have to serve now????) to the point that their network is equal to or better than verizons.

Cingular no longer has to worry about getting people to their network. They just have to keep people there, which requires good network/customer service.

It is my hope that we’ll see Verizon’s choice to sell everyone media that they already own as one of the more massive mistakes in tech business history.

Apple is leading the fight for the consumer, not against us.

  3. Enderle tests the wind before speaking. He would be just as willing to condemn Apple and to praise Apple depending on his mood at the moment. Whatever Enderle says is based more on his own emotional instability than any reasoned thought and analysis.

  4. @Freddy the Pig

    Right on!
Hell I am Canadian and don’t get Cingular. I don’t care. It will come here eventually. People mainly are into instant gratification …the stock increase was enough for me ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

What’s more I for one am happy to see the future even though it is a little delayed getting here. My only disappointment is not to find out any of the unknown features in Leopard that I was hoping would be revealed today. Oh well, good things come to those who wait.

  5. Redmond WA January 9th, 2007

Rescue Crews rushed onto the Microsoft Campus today to aid Microsoft “Heavy Weight” Steve Balmer. Balmer was found on the floor of his office in a “Fetal Position” stuttering and drooling. While the original diagnosis was that he choked on a jelly doughnut, crew quickly discovered the real reason for his colapse… Apples iPhone announcment was on the screen of his computer.

  6. For years Mac geeks have been speculating and begging for an iPhone and now that it’s here they’re complaing about Apple leaving the computer business. I think if we just relax and give some time for the dust to settle on the iPhone nuclear bomb they just dropped, we’ll be pleasanlty surprised by the Leopard, iLife, Mac announcements sure to come in the next little while.

  7. Am I the only one who is scared that Enderle says it will succeed? Hope he is right now don’t get me wrong but I am nervous that he has said this judging by some of the ridiculous things he has said in the past. :/

  8. In related news: MS announced that ‘they too are considering introducing a full-screen, nun-touch phone that squirts, once Ballmer has finished writing down the specs onto his napkin’.

It is reported that they are willing to turn their back on their WinCE and SmartPhone partners since this policy had worked so well with the Zune.

  9. The real bad wireless network is nextel/sprint…according to Clark Howard they are losing more customers than gaining them….Verizon is #1..Cingular is #2..I also would prefer verizon (my wife’s phone is good) but all the services drop some calls..just the nature of the market in the US. I would love an iphone but don’t need one although the cool factor is very tempting…If my spare house sells soon I just might get one…just my2 cents…

  10. Did you guys catch that appearance by The Man? Michael Dell took the stage at 9:00am PT today and wowed ’em at CES. Michael Dell! It’s still sinking in. What a product lineup, and it’s all tied to Microsoft Windows!

What Dell had to say and present was typically electrifying. First, Bill Gates was awesome, but Michael Dell was icing on the cake with his innovations. Had to share it with you guys, especially Buster. Zune, xBox, Windows Home Server. Gates & Dell–you guys ROCK!

What’s new with you Apple lemmings?

    Your potential. Our passion.

  11. i luv zune tang wrote: “zunetag is rite dell stock went up over 2 percent today!!!!! sure wish Apple would have done that gud ;-(“

Yes and MSFT didn’t do too bad either… they only dropped a quarter percent today!

  12. Zune Tang,

Gates and Dell were awesome once but like their equipment and software they are stale and dated. Apple has shown
this time and time again. It’s the IT folk who can not adapt… Now Apple has shown the Cell Phone companies how it
    should have been done.

Apple just did to cell phone manufacturers what they did to MP3 manufacturers, took a large sword and cut off their heads.
Everyone will have this phone in 2 years. Cingular just made billions dollars. As for the nay sayers…
The iPhone is powered by OSX and completely intergrated with all the iApps.

    The Ericksen’s Nokia’s and Motorolla’s are
    crying like little babies tonight.

Funny how you call us Lemmings, we just don’t want to pay you for
tech support anymore. XP sucks and Vista SUCKS MORE…

PS: The Zune is still selling like SNOT Cakes.. News at 11

  13. I’m so glad they went with GSM. Non-US it’s the best option.

In Australia, and probably elsewhere in the world CDMA (Verizon) is being phased out. 3G is it’s replacement. GSM is the largest network, and CDMA was a stopgap for analog networks. The US is unique in it’s reliance on CDMA.

They would have better coverage with CDMA in the US, but in 1-2 years they’d be useless elsewhere. He also mentions 3G as a future standard so that’ll be good as well. 3G (NextG) is the replacement for CDMA is Australia.

It is painful for the US at first, CDMA has better coverage, but globally they couldn’t do anything else.

I agree, Nokia and the rest of the smartphones just got king-hit badly. Waiting on 08 for my iPhone. Want a unlocked version please ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” /> Or just for someone to figure out how to do it yourself
