so all i want to know is this on a pay monthly contract for that price? if so, thats more expensive than i 1st thought :s, still want it though, may have to import from u.s. to uk if possible, cant wait them extra months, july is bad enough

A couple years ago I had a dream about this device. It ran OS X, had iPhoto integration, touchscreen, etc. I never thought I’d actually see such a thing.

Does anyone know if the version the Apple will sell will be SIM unlocked or will you be tied to Cingular even if you buy direct from Apple?

Not exactly what I had wanted, but it is also different from the device I was thinking about. I was thinking phone/iPod. This is different with the OSX apps. Very nice.
in terms of getting one, the only sticking point is the capacity of the flash memory. That is, given that flash memory is dropping so rapidly in $/GB, there is probably going to be a 16 GB version in a year. For cheaper devices like a nano, that doesn’t really factor in. For a $599 device? It will make me hesitate to buy the 1G. 8GB is really the least I would want for a device that is supposed to double as my music player (my 80 GB iPod is 1 GB from being full). Seems very sweet, but that issue will definitely be a part of the decision-making process.
As for the carrier, Cingular already has locked me in for another 18 months, so not a huge deal. Will be interesting to see how much the EDGE services will cost.
Come on folks, you’ve just been shown the form factor and capabilities of future iPods. Substitute a HD for the phone, WiFi and Bluetooth capability and you’ve got it.

I have to agree that in a year or two we will see “iPods” in this form factor.
Imagine an 80GB or 120GB iPod with all the OSX, Wifi and bluetooth goodies, but not a phone. Everything that those stupid UMPCs claim to be, but cheaper and actually small enough to carry around, easy enough to use.
I am not going to buy one this year. I don’t need a cell phone, what I want are all the other internet, messenging and music features it has in that form factor.
Are all a bunch of lemmings, having lost any sense of purpose for your life other than the very temporary thrill of holding the latest gadget in Steve’s toy closet.

You mean exactly Zune size, except in thickness, but without the HDD.
This is one beast of a phone, size and weight wise. It has no 3G, no more capacity than a small iPod, it’s more expensive than more capable devices. Anyone who’s ever used a phone touchscreen keypad only will tell you that’s a really bad idea using it anywhere other than when you can sit down and give the phone your full attention.
Yes, the Mac faithful will flock to it.

Bill Gates and Balmer must be screaming into their pillows with this new device especially since Apple is using Google maps. It’s only a matter of time before Bill starts courting Jobs to go run MS. Not even if Bill makes Jobs the second richist man in the world.
Apple will make a lot of money with the first generation. A lot of early adopters will go for it.
For myself, I just got a new phone, really need to replace my 3G iPod with a larger capacity and the price is out of my range.
I’ll wait for a year or so when the capacity increases or the WS iPod finally debuts. It took me till the 3G iPod to buy and so I’ll wait for this baby too.

Google maps sucks compared to real turn by turn mapping software, but at least it’s free and can be run on dozens of different phones. It’s a barely functional system though compared to real mapping software under Windows Mobile.

What planet are you from, man? This interface KILLS Windows mobile, which is a total abmomination. This phone has hilled the whole PDA industry as we know it. People are going to eat it up. I just want to LICK IT!!!

with Zune and Vista. Regarding the Pillows, they should have two large sumo wrestlers
hold their pillows on their faces until they are dead for inflicting Windows on the public for
soo many years.
PS the iPhone will not work with Windows, thats got to hurt….
