Apple ‘iPhone’ could hit 15 million units in first year

“Various market sources indicate that the timing for Apple to launch an iPhone should be by the end of the first quarter of 2007, with the first-year global demand for an iPhone likely to reach 6.0-15 million units. This indicates that Apple may take delivery of 12 million handsets through the whole year of 2007 instead of taking delivery in one lot,” Daniel Shen and Steve Shen report for DigiTimes.

“With DigiTimes Research recently estimating that global shipments of music handsets expected to top 134 million units in 2007, shipments of an iPhone handset could take up a 5-10% share of the global music handset market next year,” Shen and Shen report.

Shen and Shen report, “Although Apple is strong in a number of areas, including product design, integration of software and hardware systems, as well as loyalty from Apple fans, Apple may not be able to compete effectively with leading handset vendors, who have also stepped up their development of music handsets, such as the N-series and 5200/5300 handsets from Nokia, the ROKR-series from Motorola and the Walkman handsets from Sony Ericsson.”

  1. There’s been a story– someone linked it here a few days ago– about M$ paying people to blog speculation about the next big thing from Apple to prevent sales of current models. It just makes me wonder. This speculation has really ratcheted up lately, and we have quite a while to go before January’s keynote. People may begin to burn out from all the rumor-mongering and then get dissappointed when Apple produces something other than what has been expected.

  2. It’s not a matter of whether the other manufacturers include music playback, it’s HOW that feature is included and HOW it is accessed and managed.
People still fail to realize that the reason the iPod is so successful isn’t that it’s the only MP3 player on the market, it’s HOW it’s designed to make the experience enjoyable.
Word-of-Mouth is still the best advertising on the planet. That why the Mac is gaining market share at phenomenal rates and why the iPod is still king.
If Apple releases a phone, I’m confident that it will make personal information management effortless. People will feel that it will revolutionize modern communication.

  3. I’m having a lot of trouble connecting to your website from a Windows machine at work. IE keeps hanging on a pop up for “Texas an American Revolution 2007 Silverado”. And the cruelest cut of all, it has even prevented me from providing feedback in previous attempts. I’m hoping this one goes through.

  4. I’m having a lot of trouble connecting to your site from a windows machine at work. IE keeps hanging on a pop up ad for “Texas an American Revolution 2007 Silverado”. It has even prevented me from submitting feedback on previous attempts. I’m hoping this one goes thru.

  5. “Apple may not be able to compete effectively with leading handset vendors…”

This is a Pile of crap. I bet Apple computer knows a thousand times more about this market than this guy. I Apple makes a cell phone, bet your ass it will sell- and sell big time.

  6. Realisticly, I think Apple is going to have to have a revolutionary, envelope pushing product to immediately get those numbers in the first year. It is going to have to be radically different, and I think video iChat + a true iPod+ 80211n integration is the key. Some cannibalization is going to happen. I think Apple is waiting on 80211n before the iPhone and Leopard will be released.
