Apple debuts new iPod shuffle ad (link to video)

Apple Computer has posted their latest iPod ad online, this time for their new second generation (2G) iPod shuffle.

The new iPod shuffle TV ad features “Who’s Gonna Sing?” by The Prototypes and shows various male and female torsos clipping their iPod shuffles onto their clothing with an interesting morph-like transition between each person – somewhat reminiscent of (dare-we-say-it?) the end of Michael Jackson’s “Black and White” video (in overall feel, not the exact same “morph” technique, of course).

  1. Great ad. Effective. Çatchy. Right to the point. Obvious.
With the Zune ads, you are at least 20 seconds before you even see the brick.
I, on the other hand, am one of the few who kinda like the brown color of the Zune. I’m a burnt orange, earthtone kind of guy. However, I would make that color an addition to all the many colors of the iPod. M$ was ignorant to make it the main color. That came straight from Monkeyboys office. Brown works for UPS, but not for teenagers, which is the main market.

  2. Nice ad, the kind you can’t take your eyes off like those HP photograph ads.

M$ Zune ad Photos gives me the creeps. Looks like a sexual assault is going on with all the women on the ground with screaming faces.

  3. Ghandi just bought a new Shuffle to go jogging, and I gotta say…MAN that thing is sweet.

He’s trying to convince J.C. to get one, but he is, traditionally, a bit of a tight-wad.

I can create money out of thin air, so no price is too much for this guy.

  4. “Actually those aren’t morphs at all. Nothing like the technique used for the Jackson video.
What was used here is layer compositing. Think Photoshop layers… but in motion.”

I was trying to figure out how they did the videos. It’s too smooth for a morph, but I also don’t think it’s entirely layer compositing either. If you look at the transition between the orange shirt with the tiger on it and the horizontal striped purple and grey shirt, you can notice that the orange shirt underneath actually starts to fold in as the striped one comes down. It is very much like someone was putting on another shirt.

Also, when the black jacket is unzipped to reveal the orange tank top, the black jacket and arms completely disapears behind the woman. A little easier to think about with layer compositing, but still that guy had to shrink down to a small enough place to be covered up by the more petitie woman.

On many levels, this is a very nice ad.

  5. What’s so great about that ad? “Put some music on.” – pleeeease.

I just got the new bitchin’UPS brown Zune and I tied a big rope chain to it and got it dangling ’round my neck. Yea, baby!

  6. “Made me think that iPod owners are supposed to be trans-gender cross dressing fashion victims who don’t have a clear sense of their personal style.”

    Watch the generalizations.
I’ll put my personal style up against yours any time.
