Apple’s ‘Get a Mac’ campaign: ‘Mac Guy’ dropped, ‘PC Guy’ to switch to Mac

“Radar reports that Apple’s ‘Mac Guy,’ Justin Long is out, but ‘PC Guy’ John Hodgman stays,” Bambi Hambi writes for Mac360. “Is Apple’s best ever TV ad campaign headed for history or ready to make history?”

“In true Apple style, the change will be historic. ‘PC Guy’ will switch to a Mac,” Hambi writes. “What a perfect set up for Apple to show Windows virus weary PC users how easy and wonderful a digital life can be when you switch to a Mac than having ‘PC Guy’ actually switch to a Mac.”

Hambi writes, “Don’t tell me that’s not a brilliant idea. Will it happen? Yes, sometime between the launch of Windows Vista and the introduction of Mac OS X Leopard.”

  1. >>John Hodgman was originally cast as because he is goofy looking, and plays the part of a buffoon …

Ndelc – Of all the reasons Hodgman was cast, I don’t think “because he’s goofy looking” was high on the list. He’s got cult appeal from his appearances on The Daily Show and his “know-it-all” stand-up character. But am I the only one who thinks Long and Hodgman are dead-ringers for the young Steve Jobs and Bill Gates??

  2. I’m not saying that won’t happen, but I call BS if it does. As I pointed out the other day, the actors are playing computers, not computer users.

Your comment is a great example of a geek, thinking in absolute logical terms, trying to reason about real life. And failing…

So what if the guys played computers, not users? The PC computer playing guy can simply start playing the Mac computer playing guy. It would be a great metaphor for “switching”, and everyone would get it.

    Except geeks of course.

And, as a clarification. While the do say “I’m a mac” and “I’m a PC”, the two characters DO NOT play a Mac computer and a PC computer.

Instead they stand as symbols of the Mac and the PC experience, encompassing the hardware, the software and the mentallity of the end user.

  3. Come on MDN, your own readers were suggesting this as soon as Justin Long got dumped. Why give Bambi the perceived credit for coming up with this idea – like she’s trying to do.

If it happens she’ll say “woohoo! I thought of that first!” Bollocks of course.

  4. “Huh? How can he switch? HE’S A PC! The point of the ads was to heap abuse on the PC itself, not on the users, by having the actors embody the machines! “

The point of the Ad would be, Mac, PC, Same hardware, same thing.

He’ll do it at the point Apple starts pre-loading Vista, some time next year.
