This is certainly very somber news.
Does anyone know if Apple updated the iPod firmware from 1.2 with this release? Version 1.2 broke my 60GB 5G iPod with video – all I get are scrambled sceens and freezes when I update, requiring a restore with version 1.1.2. (I suppose I’ll find out in a few hours anyway, but if anybody knows…?)
what about the album-art issues?
it would be great to have the option of either attaching the artwork to the file itself, or removing all artwork from the files and have a single file in the itunes folder. i just don’t like the inconsistency with artwork that was previously attached with that which we can now download.
and what about the cover art screensaver? will the 10.4.8 update allow us to show off that “beautiful” artwork steve was so proud of?
and one more thing…
i have a feeling all our complaints with coverflow will be resolved with core-animation in leopard… agree??
trex67: A failure that severe would be all over the Mac news sites. Are you sure that it wasn’t a glitch while updating? I’d try to update again.
trex67 — I’ve been having zero problems with my 5G 60GB iPod under the 1.2 firmware update…you might try a complete restore, rather than an update, on the next try…
Thanks for the tips, folks.
But, I’ve actually got a gripe: In order to play the songs I purchased throughout the years, I am forced to upgrade to iTunes 7??? That seems a bit ridiculous. I PAYED for those songs fair and square, so why should I be forced to upgrade at a time that Apple suggests in order to play them?
G4 1.5PPC continues to not restart on command. Also with 7.01 the Wallflowers ‘we could be hers’ would not sync until I loaded it into a separate playlist. Then on my 5g video it displayed Hillary Duff artwork. The Mac still has the original artwork.
Bugs?

To LordRobin:
It certainly wasn’t just me. If you go to the discussion forums (http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=808) for iPod at apple.com you’ll find dozens of people have had this problem. I realize if you haven’t had a problem you don’t need to check the forums to find out if it’s widespread or not. As to why it hasn’t been more widely reported, your guess is as good as mine. It may only affect some of the earliest 5G video iPods – I ordered mine the day they were announced.
To justme2:
I’m glad you haven’t had any problems with 1.2. I guess most people who’ve upgraded have been OK. To clarify my experience (and I’ve read many identical accounts), I downloaded/installed iTunes 7.0 the afternoon it was released. I then docked my 60GB 5G iPod and was notified that a new version of the iPod, 1.2, was available. I clicked on the update button, and after it installed the iPod automatically restarted. Within a few seconds, I realized I had a problem – the screen “scrambled” (that’s just the only way I can describe it) and froze. The clickwheel was completely unresponsive. Naturally, I panicked. I reset using the menu and select buttons on the iPod, but after the iPod restarted, it scrambled and froze again. I repeated this sequence a couple more times, same result. I then tried to restore with 1.2, which deleted the contents, but I figured it was toast anyway at that point. All that process got me was a frozen iPod that was empty as well. LUCKILY, I was able to downgrade to version 1.1.2 using the previous updater which was still in my utilities folder.
The real downside for me is that I was hoping to sell this iPod and buy an 80B 5.5G. But who wants to buy an iPod that they can’t upgrade to the newest version? (Would you?) So, unless Apple decides to fix this rare exceptional problem, I’m kinda stuck.
BTW, I’m a total Mac fanatic, and this crappy experience hasn’t changed that. I’ve got a lemon, but it still works fine, just not as fine as I’d like.
I got the songs to play. It took a little hack on my computer for some reason. Thanks.
anyone have the nike+ipod kit? I’ve got it, and the volume of the nike woman’s voice is really loud compared to my music…
Am I the only one with this problem? is it related to iTunes 7?
How do you completely uninstall itunes 7 on a mac? I’ve downloaded 6, but can only get so far in the installation process. After selecting my location (mac hd), I get “package name: itunes – action disabled”.
Am I missing something?
I get that too KM, does anyone know how to completly uninstall itunes 7 for a mac?
I finally just deleted every itunes folder or package I had in applications, HD, and home>library. Then I emptied my trash and downloaded itunes 6 just fine.
Make sure you copy your library to a disc first, etc.
