Speculation season is in full swing. Following two separate “Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard screenshots” incidents (see related articles below), a video purporting to be Mac OS X Leopard has surfaced.
Apple plans a sneak peek of Leopard on August 7th at WWDC 2006 in San Francisco.

I love the whole tabbed Finder though. I was hoping for that since Tiger.

The only thing with tabs is that you lose the functionality of expose, sure you can read the tabs but expose lets you see individual items.
Fake:
1. Too short for no reason.
2. Doesn’t show enough.
3. Why use a shaky handheld video camera? Use something like iShowU for a clean movie of what’s happening on screen.
4. Just edit a movie together to do what you want to fake, play it full screen and shoot it with your video camera.
Well, you can hardly say that was “Photoshopped”.
Production values a bit on the shoddy side, but sufficiently clear to show the tabs.
So … we have Tabs in Safari (and Firefox)
We may have Tabs in Finder
We could have Tabs for screens – if only third party
Will we get all the above? From Apple?

as much as i like seeing wats going on, and wats about to be released. this leeker inside apple is not a good thing. apple needs to find out who did is.
It was also shown using a PowerPC iMac (as much as the shaky camera work allowed me to see). I wonder if you will be able to dual boot with Winblows on the PPC Macs with Leopard?

I’m going to repost what I posted yesterday because I think it is very instructive.
An interesting exchange between a co-worker and myself yesterday:
Coworker: (seeing me reading MDN’s website) “Do you have a Mac?”
Me: “Yes”
Coworker: “I was thinking about buying a Mac last year when my Dell died.”
Me: “Did you?”
Coworker: “No. I bought another Dell, but it died after nine months. That was a few months ago.”
Me: “Did you buy a Mac then?”
Coworker: “No. I bought another Dell.”
Me: (blank look on my face) “Really! If you bought a car and it died after 9 months, would you buy another car from the same company?”
Coworker: (blank look on his face) “Uhhhhh…..No, I don’t think so…….I should of bought a Mac.”

I can’t say real or fake for sure. What I can say is that if that’s fake, that’s a very well made fake.
That’s probably not too hard to fake, if you know what you’re doing.
I call fake on this one.

Heck it’s probably shaky and short because it’s being recorded with a mobile phone.
This could have been faked, clearly there could have been more video taken.
absolutely FAKE it doesnt make any sense from a usability point of view to have tabs in the finder.
Ill explain why. As it is, the existing items in the finder menu run along the side vertically, this allows each seperate item to only take up the height of the text. If you have tabs like in this video youre going to run out of room horizontally. and who wants to have the items names shortened ?
theres just no need for this, it doesnt add anything to the usability, in fact it makes it worse.
Apple won’t do this.

If that’s fake somebody has waaaay too much free time. When the user selects tabs the window slides down as the tabs come in. That’s pretty slick for a fake.
Not fake! How many Finder windows do U guys end up having stashed behind Ur two hundred open safari windows? I get up to, say ten… Makes perfect sense to tab Finder!

I agree with Carlo, that a tabbed Finder in and of itself doesn’t appear to be more functional, however, this is Apple we’re talking about. We need to see how they implement it. They could be planning a paradigm shift in the way we interact with the Finder in which tabbed windows are perfect. We’ll see.
But what if it’s done right? Tabbed finder windows could be usable if properly implemented. For example, if I drag a folder from tabbed window 1 to the title of tabbed window 2 and brought tabbed window 2 to focus. Also, while you would eventually run out of horizontal room, it could be handled similarly to the bookmarks bar in Safari – and I don’t see too many people opening more than a few tabs. I for one think this could be a nice little addition to the finder – if it’s done right.
As far as the video goes – yeah, it is a bit underwhelming, but if it is indeed true, it was probably the quickest new feature to show off. Notice the person didn’t even get the full About Mac window before turning off the camera. I have a feeling some of the shakes are from being nervous about being caught, ’cause if this is real someone’s getting their ass kicked. Then again – it wouldn’t have been impossible to fake.

I can’t even imagine why sites, MDN mostly lately keep posting this crap. Why MDN?
Also why is MDN so slow lately? I wait forever in Safari for the site to load. I’m a 30Mbps connection and all other site fly. Sometime I wait but most otehrs I just split. This visit wasn’t so bad. But most times I don’t bother.

Back to the finder – Looks useful, hope it’s true.
Relax with the analysis. This Is So Fake. There is no reason to have the camera-work be quite so Zapruder-like, except a certain of exuberance about the faking, and a healthy desire to obscure details.
(I would guess that we are just looking at a skinned and renamed version of Safari in action: the web pages are pictures of Finder windows. That’s an elegantly minimal solution to the problem of mocking up a tabbed Finder. Note, too, that we don’t get to see the About this Mac window actually spawn–we just pan over to it quickly.)

Obviously when names in tabs are shortened, simply hovering over them would reveal a popup of the full name. I can’t imagine why you would think this is a deal breaker for the feature. After all, the Dock doesn’t show any names at all until you hover over items.
I for one welcome our new tabbed Finder yadda yadda yadda.
I dunno. I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest to see tabbed Finder windows. It goes well with their “Finder as application” window introduced with Panther (right?). If you’re going to have a single Finder window meant to be the only window you need (as opposed to opening a different window for each folder, the old-fashioned way), tabs make a heluva lotta sense.
But I wouldn’t use them. I’m too set in my ways. I prefer to have every folder I’m currently browsing in a different window, old-school. I always get rid of the folders on the left-side, and I only use column view to do a quick “drill-down” when I’m searching for something.
Expect the next Apple Leopard pre-release on Flickr. Viral marketing at its best, brought to you by Apple. If nobody gets sued over this, then you know Apple released this inte3ntionally to stir up sh*t.

Tabs completely make sense for users with small screens. (think 12 in. PowerBook)
Anyway, the tabs wouldn’t necessarily narrow into oblivion; they could be like Camino and overflow into a pop-down menu.

How about an ad campaign where Ashton Kuchar goes around office buildings with MacBooks running Leopard and gets PC users to try them out. And if they want to smash their PC or throw it off a building they can keep the MacBook? At the end the new Mac user says, “My name is Jon Dough, and I just got Tabb’d.”

Great job Apple! – except tabbed browsing is already available in a nicer file browser – Cocoatechs’ Pathfinder.
It totalt fake im using 10.5 now and i can assure you there are no tabs and under macosx it says version 10.5 not version 10.5 prerelease-beta
