Sherlock’s missing movie trailers explained

“In Sherlock’s Movie channel, movie trailers may not appear even though other movie information does, such as show times and theatre locations. This can happen when the Moviefone website that Sherlock relies on for movie trailers does not offers the trailer in a format that Sherlock can use,” Apple explains.

“If this happens, view movie trailers at the Apple Movie Trailers website or Moviefone’s website,” Apple advises.

MacDailyNews Take: We post this because it happens routinely to us and we get emails about this issue, too. Not much of a solution, but what are you going to do? Yes, we still sometimes use poor little abandoned Sherlock.

  1. The problem isn’t that Apple is no longer supporting Sherlock, it’s the sneaky way in which they went about it. Instead of openly stating that Sherlock will no longer be supported in 10.4 and beyond, they just let the features languish inexplicably until they finally explained this week.

Apple needs to be more proactive in handling their shortfalls, a press release regarding overheating notebooks or Sherlock trailer inaccesibility would go a long way towards alleviating the bitterness that I see on these forums.

Every company makes mistakes, but Apple, it seems, refuses to admit theirs, even when a firmware update (in the case of overheating) illustrates that the problem did indeed exist. Please Apple, we love your products, but we want to like your conduct too.

  2. I’ve had very few times when trailers wouldn’t show or play in Sherlock, but that’s never really been an issue as I never watched them anyway.

However, for the past 4 weeks or so and for no reason I can discover, no movie info shows up in Sherlock at all. Getting info from newspaper sites, theater sites or MoviePhone (where Sherlock got it’s info…or used to) is a royal pain. Navigation requires going thru about a half dozen pages and is snail slow.

I’ve always used Sherlock for finding theaters and movie showtimes because it was always quicker and easier, so it’s a bummer.

  3. Sherlock lover here!

I’m actually a big fan of two Sherlock features. One is its movie search. Not having trailers anymore is no skin off my nose, as it still does a great job of telling me what’s playing and when, for every one of the many theatres in my area. I know some widgets do the same, but what can I say? I like it Old School.

However, the second thing I use – that I really rely on Sherlock for – is language translation. I swear, Sherlock has no equivalent that I’ve seen in a widget in that department. I’m sure I’m not typical, but I actually use that feature quite a bit, with a variety of languages (I’d love to see more though – especially Latin). And while it’s translations are never perfect, they do get the job done in a quick and easy way that I haven’t been able to equal with any other software.

    So, Long Live Sherlock! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cool grin” style=”border:0;” />

  4. sherlock movie does stink – I finally tired of using it and I’m in a town that the service should be readily accessible.

Instead I do this in google:
    movie:myZipCode
    <enter>

for trailers I always like Apples Quicktime Section

  5. Upgrade “incentive” I guess. Kinda Adobe-like, if you ask me.

After buying 2 successive versions of family packs of OS X, I balked at getting Tiger, because I’m fine with Panther, and was tired of dropping $180 a year for an updated OS. Too bad Apple is letting some of the features fall by the wayside. You’d expect that the features of your OS would remain intact after such a short period of time, especially considering the lifespan of Apple’s hardware.

Odyssey67: I’m with you. BTW – Was also with you on all your “transition” comments.

  6. Odyssey, I too use Sherlock for movies and translations. Looking up the local movies available, theatres they are in, times they start, run times, etc. still seems easiest to me in Sherlock compared to everything else I’ve tried. Translations seem more accurate than other things I’ve tried too. The other functions don’t stand out to me.

Having Latin in Sherlock would be a great help. Back in the day, Latin was *the* language to take in school — none of those whimpy derivative “romance languages” (which has nothing to do with the languages being romantic, but rather to do with them being derived from a Roman language). However, translating Cicero’s orations was a pain.

Odyssey, even with a competing name, would you like to borrow my early copy of Aeneid by Virgil? (And no, contrary to popular opinion, I am *not* old enough to have known Virgil personally.)

  7. “Sherlocks movie info is THE BEST! (When the movie trailers work) Now if someone could just port it to Dashboard I’d be a happy camper.”

I couldn’t agree more! I haven’t seen any program, widget, or web page that does what Sherlock’s movie does. Widget’s are too small to to what Sherlock does.

If anyone has an alternitive for movie listings that works as good as Sherlock please let me know!
