RUMOR: Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard features revealed

“My Non Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with Apple precludes me from revealing proprietary detail, but because most, if not all, of this is posted elsewhere and is commonly available, I have no problems with confirming the following,” “technosaints” writes on the OSx86 Project Forum.

Some highlights of “technosaints” long list:
• During the Leopard install, you are given the option to create specific partitioning to accommodate M$ Vista and Linux. Reformatting your HD is not required. Depending on your processor and RAM, all OS’s can run simultaneously & independently. A (minimum) 150 GB HD is required (250 GB is recommended), and 2 GB RAM (minimum) should you wish to run more than one OS. Dual processors are required for optimum performance, though this may change in 10.5.1 or 10.5.2.
• The Dock will be much different. One new feature is that as icons are added, they will automatically migrate/expand around the screen as needed (or, you can reduce the size of the icons as presently done). Also, multiple docks are an option as is the amount of “bounce” desired in those dock apps launching or needing your attention. There is an accompanying bounce sound, a boing-boing sort of thing.
• Hooks are built-in to support an Apple PDA, but I can say no more.
• You can have 3 ‘Finder’ windows open simultaneously, much like having 3 displays, all running different applications or OS’s. If networked, any 3 computers can be displayed. Depending on the function/application, you can even Drag & Drop between displays.
• Mail, Address Book, iCal, iSight, and iChat will become one integrated application, much like Entourage (but better).
• An across the board speed increase of 35 – 40%.
• Sherlock has been eliminated (use Widgets instead).
• Numerous (other) bug fixes, including a totally rewritten Spotlight.

“Leopard will be previewed in June at the WWDC and released in early November,” “technosaints” writes. However, Apple is scheduled to hold World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC 2006) in August, not June.

  1. “Mail, Address Book, iCal, iSight, and iChat will become one integrated application”

Pardon?. Evertyhing except iSight is software. How are they going to convert a piece of aluminium (hardware) into software in order to bundle it into a big “Entourage but better”. If they do, im going to be they are alchemists or something

  2. “Mail, Address Book, iCal, iSight, and iChat will become one integrated application, much like Entourage (but better).”

Bleah, what a pile of steaming donkey turds THAT would be…which is also better than Entourage, coincidentally…

  3. One new feature is that as icons are added, they will automatically migrate/expand around the screen as needed (or, you can reduce the size of the icons as presently done).

What does that mean? I can’t make any sense out of it at all?

When you add or remove icons in the Dock as it exists now, it automatically resizes all of the icons in the dock to best fit the screen, so WTF is this guy talking about?

And there is no program called “iSight”. It’s a video camera, not software.

  4. And there it is on April one, alright. Word for word.

anyways .. regarding iSight: It actually does have a software component. Keeps showing up on my Software Update but I don’t have the hardware. iSight Update 1.0.3 980KB

  5. I’m also going to need eight gallons of margarita mix, two gallons of tequila, two hundred limes, eighty-six bags of round ice cubes, eight hundred feet of Playtypus Super 100 fishing line, six gallons of kerosene, forty-seven pounds of Silly Putty, thirty-two heads of cabbage, an air chain hoist, seventeen Flamenco dancers, and a large block of goat cheese.

  6. would assume that this will be the last version to run on PowerPC and Intel.

When you assume… Tiger supports the g3, which are 2-9 years old. There is no way they will drop support for g3, g4 and g5 for 10.6, which is probably 2-4 years away.

I’ m highly skeptical of this. Why the factual errors? It doesn’t make sense for a highly informed source or a haox starter. If I were making stuff up I would check some basic facts first, then again if I was working close enough to Apple to know these things I would know that the iSight is hardware and that WWDC is late this year. Strange, very strange.

  7. 3. DiskWarrior (in lieu of TechTool) will be bundled with 10.5 if one chooses Apple Care or extends their current Apple Care contract. I don’t know the pricing or specific details, though Apple Care for older machines will increase significantly with the machine’s age. Machines over 6 years old (from date of mfgr.) are not eligible.

My thoughts on why this is fake, or possible has some truths, but is mostly fabrication, is from item 3 above. DiskWarrior isn’t a replacement tool for TechTool Pro. DiskWarrior is a directory repair application. Its great at what it does, but it does not check memory and other hardware issues, perform speed tests, etc. That said, I’ve been able to use DiskWarrior to solve issues 75%-85% of the time, without having to escalate to TechTool Pro, but I’d be pretty pissed if I needed to perform a hardware test, and the only tool Apple provided was DiskWarrior.

  8. “Mail, Address Book, iCal, iSight (sic), and iChat will become one integrated application…”

Makes no sense. I love them as seperate apps, plus they work fantastically together. Entourage is one messy uber app. Better keep them seperate, please.

  9. Well cripes. All we really want to be true is the part about running multiple OSes concurrently, right? And for you guys that say no to be wrong. ahaha.

C’mon. I’m a a tired old man. Plus .. the missus won’t pop for a new Mac for me ’til it’ll run Windows, too.

  10. The report does sound questionable, especially given all the discrepancies.

The multi-boot OS thing sounds ludicrous. Tech support alone would kill Apple, especially if it didn’t work as advertised… oh, wait, Apple doesn’t advertise. ;^)

Seriously, ANYthing purporting running Vista directly on a Mac would HAVE to have problems. After all, it’s a Microsoft OS! I would NEVER cripple a Mac running ANY form of Windows on it. Being able to run a Windows app directly, without needing Windows could be desirable for those one-of a-kind business apps people are saddled with running.

Some of the other “rumors” sound pretty desirable, though!

iCal, in it’s present state is a joke. it’s really just a 1.0 with some bug and compatibility fixes. Apple should buy Claris Organizer (now Palm Desktop) back from palm and do a serious overhaul.
Address book isn’t much better. And I wish they would make the mail Pictures easter Egg a standard feature.

    http://www.nikwest.de/Software/

Combining iCal and Address Book with Mail seems like an excellent move. If I could selectively Sync it with my Palm and phone, without buying six different utilities (Missing Sync, Blue Phone Elite, etc.) that would be excellent.

Stirring iChat into the mix seems moot, since it links with Mail and the Address Book. I rarely use it, so am not familiar with it’s niceties, though using it for direct file transfers is great!

Anyway, it’s fun hearing and pondering all this stuff. It’s part of what makes the the Mac universe so much fun!

  11. I find it interesting how from the beginning days of Mac OS X, we have never seen any info or screenshots of the upcoming OS until Steve took the wraps off of it*. Are we supposed to believe that all of a sudden, all of this info has sprung up? I don’t think so.

*Please correct me if I am wrong.

  12. The redheaded stepchild, Sherlock, has been ignored and abused for some time. RIP

There is no reason to use the above derogatory racial statement. Why is it that Redheaded step children are supposed to be beaten? If I said this about any other group that wasn’t white the ACLU would be sending threatening letters to MDN and pressing for action.
