Firefox breaks 10% mark, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer lost nearly 4% market share in past year

“Firefox, the free open-source Web browser from Mozilla Corp., quietly gained enough users in March to finally grab 10% of the Web browser market, according to a report released yesterday by Web audience-measurement firm NetApplications.com. Firefox was used by 10.05% of Web surfers last month, up from 9.75% in February. That compared with the 84.7% of users on various versions of Microsoft Corp.’s Internet Explorer in March,” Eric Lai reports for Computerworld. “In third place, according to Net Applications, with 3.19% was Apple Computer Inc.’s Safari browser, which is used only on Macintosh computers. Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based Net Applications specializes in tracking browser usage at small to midsize companies.”

  1. wish apple could bring safari up to the compatibility level of firefox, fortunately we have safari enhancer which makes life easier. I really like the feel and function of safari but all too often i have to reopen the page with firefox. I guess it’s all good though.

  2. I got my friend to install FireFox on his PC and I showed him all the cool stuff and usability and he says it’s much better than IE6 (no sh?t Sherlock)BUT he still wont use it. He says, “I’m used to IE6.” Some people! Grrr! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”shock” style=”border:0;” />

  3. I research corporate sites eternally with Safari. In the last 6 to 12 months compatability issues have disappeared 100%. Safari is one very, very neat browser now.

For me, scores out of 10 are:

    Safari: 9
    Firefox: 7.5
    Camino: 7
    IE on Windows: 2.5

  4. Jimbo von Winskinheimer – I used Lynx back in Fall 1994 during my last semester of college. I had an Advanced Editing class held in a computer lab and two of us were smart enough to use the Macs in the back row – IIvx if I remember right. Lynx was cool if really simple. I had a 7100/66 back in my room that we called the Death Star because it was such a monster for the time. Oh, and I’m typing this in IE at work. Stupid Big Four company will only allow access via IE, even for simple Web mail.

  5. Greed will be the ultimate undoing of MS.

Active X wasn’t “invented” to make anything better, it was designed to make IE proprietary and keep the easy money rolling in.

But MS has shafted themselves by interconnecting Active X, IE and that kludged together pile of garbage called Windows.

In the not too distant future this technological house of cards will collapse under its own weight.

    MS is the Virus!
