The total prize won amounts to US$13,854.
The rules of the contest included such provisions as:
• Instructions must boot Windows XP (at least), not Vista or any other version of Windows.
• Windows must be able to coexist with Mac OS X and each system may not interfere with the operation of the other (basically a traditional dual boot system where one OS is running at a time)
• Your method, upon starting the computer, must offer the user to boot either OS X or Windows XP
• You cannot use virtualization software such as Xen or VMWare
• Winner gives contest website the rights to post the solution exclusively

You need to have Win XP running on a PC first for the “solution” to work.
Can someone please explain to me the hoopla surrounding this? If some one can made Virtual PC for a PowerPC (and it worked rather well), I fail to see why making something similar for an Intel Core Duo is a big deal.
With Virtual PC you can drag and drop from one platform to another. WIth this dual boot thing, I doubt it if it is anywhere near as flexible.
I have absolutely no doubts that there will Microsoft will make a Virtual PC for the new Macs; they have everything to gain.

Well I suppose if people can start using their Apple laptops in windows software environment it’s at least a foot in the door for OS X.

While VirtualPC may be a great product it doesn’t allow access directly to hardware such as video cards… this is not good if you’re using apps that require any amount of graphics…
Virtualization may hold a better view if it’s implemented correctly. The hardware’s there, it just needs to be accessed without affecting the rest of the system, just like it would if it was a native app.
Personnally, I’m looking forward to products like VMWare for the Mac! or even Core level virtualization that will enable us to run OS X and WinXP/Vista virtually and concurrently with OS X

Yep… For me this is not a big deal because I do my best not to touch windows in any way. But for some users who depend on a windows only software which has to take use of the hardware at its fullest it just might be a reason to switch. And that my friends is always a good thing. But ultimately a wine like virtualization solution would be the best way to run win apps on a mac. It would make Windows PCs obsolete.
I’ll wait and see. Integration does not always work, on the long run.

This can only help Apple. Why? Because it allows more people to purchase their hardware. They can run their XP while using Apple hardware and possibly dual boot to try OS X. It helps gamers buy Macs. Now all of a sudden, the Power Mac becomes a viable choice for gamers. And it helps people like me who work in a Windows shop. My chances of getting a MacBook Pro have gone from 0% to maybe 5%. Hey, its a start.

2. Video record a Dell starting up.
3. Play it full-screen on an iMac. (It was too dark to see the mouse and keyboard actually being used).
4. Keep the money and go drinkin’ with your mates.
