Analysts: Apple Video iPod ‘likely’ on February 28, ‘coud be tablet-sized or HDTV-based’

Bear Stearns analysts Andrew Neff, William Hand and Ted Chung weigh in on Apple’s special event scheduled for February 28th: “Video iPod likely — but could be tablet-size or HDTV-based. As speculation begins to build around what AAPL could announce on February 28, we think — focusing on the adjectives ‘fun’ and ‘new’ — the most likely products are either a tablet-size iPod or larger HDTV-based iPod… While more Intel-based products (new iBook or iMacs) or a phone are possible, neither strikes us as ‘fun’ or ‘new.’ Or it could be one more thing,” The Consumer Electronics Stock Blog reports.

  1. *iPod Boombox – Both Fun and new.

*iBook update – If it is a total revamp then it could be made more fun and then could maybe be classified as new.

*Media Hub paired with a wireless talbet for controlling the content – Very fun Very new.

*Tablet style Video iPod – New but not much fun for all the people taht just bought a new iPod when it was updated a few months ago.

*Some kind of software – Photobooth has been refered to by Stevo as just for fun so maybe something along its lines. Maybe a new iSight and a windows based version of iChat or partnership. Now that would be very fun.

The fabled iPhone – Fun I guess new not really new as there are a few phones out already, but make it compatible with Skype and allow one to use it for video communtication through AOL, .Mac , and Skypes system and you have a very fun phone.

Apple branded HDTV with built in Media center. Very Fun, Very New.

  2. No question these are consumer based products with the greatest likelihood being
full length movies for iTunes, a media hub with TIVO like capability (here comes the cube again!)…and possibly a touch screen ipod with a bigger screen. Anything else would be a genuine surprise.

  3. LOL, man, people are just pulling these predictions out of their asses aren’t they?

An HDTV based iPod?!? So is that an HDTV with an iPod interface, or an iPod that can play HDTV content? I’m willing to bet money that both are VERY unlikely to be announced on Feb. 28.

  4. Our “wish list” of speculation is about a foot long. Everything is on it and it’s more than 10 months before Macworld.

    – Airport Express AV
    – Intel Mac mini
    – Intel iBook (“MacBook?”)
    – iPhone (cell, VOIP, or both)
    – Tablet Mac
    – Tablet iPod
    – Media Center Mac Gizmo for HDTV
    – Pro Apps ready for Intel
    – New movie store w/movie downloads
    – iBambi**

Apple could do this kind of thing four times a year and we’d all drool four times a year with a wish list longer than the monthly list of Windows viruses.

**How about the introduction of an “iBambi” with nothing inside. You have to feed her, otherwise she pouts.

The iBambi would be the most fun you’ve ever had. She’s a quadruple D– Dinner. Dancing. Drinks. Delightful (though that doesn’t start until after the dinner, dancing, and drinks).

The warranty is only good until her delight wears off.

Someone suggested a dinner for vegan Steve Jobs with totally non-vegan Bamb. Even Steve can’t afford a night of dining and dancing with the pneumatic Miss Hambi.

  5. Don’t forget that there will likely be another event just a month later on April 1, Apple’s 30th anniversary. Steve’s mention of it at this year’s keynote was no simple musing me thinks. I think the anniversary would be a good point to make an announcement of the pivotal move into the living room, along with media products. TIme will tell.

  6. HDTV based iPod?

    So what, a 32″ Widescreen iPod then? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

This guy is blowing smoke out of his arse. The small low key invitation is going to be just that, a small low key event with a few iPod accessories and possibily a Intel Mac Mini (outside bet).

All this wide speculating on massive new products like a Video iPod will just serve to make Apple’s Stock drop when they just introduce a few “fun, new” products on Tuesday and nothing really major.

  7. Times like this, ol’ monkey-boy must be hunkered under his desk, sweating with nervous anticipation. ‘Cause after whatever-it-is gets announced, like always before, he’ll have to gather his… developers, tape on some pasties… and dance like there’s no tomorrow.

  8. I’d add this to the speculative list of new product ideas:

A laptop-sized, Bluetooth-enabled input device (i.e.: keyboard/mouse) for Front Row/Home Theater use. And instead of the predictable keyboard approach, could Apple surprise everyone with an input device that is a screen-based tablet…

  9. I’ll join in. I predict:

    1) iPod:HD-DVR built into an enormous HD LCD screen (essentially AppleTV) — or maybe an enormous screen w/doc for iPod:HD-DVR

    2) iPod w/Wi-Fi built in and ability to download straight from the iTunes Store without the need for computer

    3) iPhone that works over VOIP/Wi-Fi as well as any mobile phone network I choose (Ha! yeh right)

Honestly, in terms of innovation (new) any one of those would be neato completo yippee, but I’m hoping like crazy that it’s a Mac Mini w/Apple HD-DVR capabilities.
