User receives iPod Radio Remote (with link to photos)

An iPod user received his iPod Radio Remote today via FedEx. “I ordered it right after the keynote and since I’m the person who can’t stand waiting for something I’ve already bought, I went with FedEx 2nd day shipping for $6 more. Here are my first impressions,” BOSS677 reports at iPodbank. “The remote looks good. It’s quite tiny but matches my white iPod well. I would imagine that it wouldn’t quite match the black iPod. I think Apple should really consider coming up with a black version.”

“Radio reception is quite good. You can set your favorite radio stations in memory and it’s easy to change from station to station. Click the wheel and the name of the station displays. You can also use the remote to turn the radio on and off. One great feature is the ability to browse iPod menus while listening to the radio. You can look at your photo’s and listen to the radio at the same time,” BOSS677 reports. For those “who like to listen to news or radio talk shows, this could be a fantastic add-on to your iPod.

  1. Why? The headphones are white and this remote attaches to the headphones not the iPod itself.

And don’t think you’ll ever get black headphones from Apple… The white earbuds have become a cultural symbol of coolness..

  2. well, so much for the “iPod doesn’t have FM radio” arguement.

didn’t people start buying portable music devices because they were tired of FM radio? after i bought my first Walkman many years ago i’ve rarely listened to radio.

    MW: “need” as in…
“Radio? ‘Pods don’t need no steenkin’ radio!!”

  3. Baron says: “didn’t people start buying portable music devices because they were tired of FM radio?”

Yes, but for some people it’d be nice to be able to get the weather, or a stock update or news report on their iPod every now and then.. Now we can.

  4. I almost never listen to the radio, but when I do, it’s a local AM station. They cover local news very well and I like their political bent. I wonder if anybody sells an AM radio receiver for the iPod.

  5. The thing that sucks with this is that it attaches to the BOTTOM of the iPod! Not at the top like the headphone, but at the bottom where the dock connection goes.

With that said, my iPod carry case does not have a bottom attachment for working out, and why woluld it? I would probably buy one if the price was $20 bucks cheaper… and the outlet was not at the bottom….

  6. I don’t understand why AM radio never gets mentioned in these threads. FM generally = music. But that is why i have an iPod (well, 3 actually). But AM = talk/news/live sports which i don’t have on my iPod. I would buy the first AM radio add-on anybody made.

The main draw of FM for me is for the gym. Most of them have switched their audio for the TVs in the cardio areas to broadcasting in FM.

  7. Jesus, don’t they sell Am/Fm radios so small and cheap that they’ve become like calculators? Why must we have a fm radio for the iPod? I am just glad it’s an add-on rather than a new feature. Please, Apple, if all the other MP3 player companies decide to add bottle openers to their MP3 players to use it as a value-added ‘we have this that the iPod doesn’t’ type of maneuvers, please do not follow suit other than like this. Sell a bottle opener that people can attach to their iPod and make them pay $50.

  8. In the UK we have the wonderful Radio Four – BBC talk radio, I guess you’d call it, but really an indescribable mix of plays, soaps, comedy, documentaries and all sorts of other programmes. An extraordinarily rich mix of programming, for sure. To have that on your iPod is easily worth the price of the remote

  9. Wow, $50 for a WIRED FM radio and remote control. That’s about $30 too much. Even the remote for my Sony TV is $30 on the internet, and it has a lot more plastic and buttons ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” /> Oh, and it’s infrared.

Guess Apple were fortunate/intelligent they didn’t pick a company name with an “S” in it which can be replaced with $.

Still if you must have it, you must have it (and the iPod interface is pretty sexy.) But I still maintain it’s overpriced.

  10. Baron says: “didn’t people start buying portable music devices because they were tired of FM radio?”

Yes, and anyone who says otherwise is mentally deranged.

    Or a Creative Employee.

  11. I’d like to see a 3rd party add on turn the iPod into a universal remote with the codes listed for every type of remote. I could go anywhere and wreak havok with that. Go to a bar and sear ch for the make model in my iPod then turn the thing up or down or change the chanell…hehehe.

  12. If Apple thinks radio is so important they should build it into the iPods. Personally I can’t stand wired remote controls; they add more cables and clutter in my pocket. If you want a great wireless remote control look at Griffin’s accessories. The AirClick is amazing.

  13. This is just like the Mac mini, it just removes one more lame excuse for people to use; like, I’d buy a Mac, but it’s more expensive than my Dull little white box. Now, those people who want FM, can put up or shut up.

  14. Got mine Friday, ordered it on Wednesday on Apple Store Sweden which said 5 days for delivery!

Works fine when once you set it to European radio frequency reciption standard, instead of default US ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />.

Reciption and sound above average for such recievers ( I have small Sangean FM-AM and a SonyEricsson add-on radio hands-free to compare to.

  15. When I’m at home I’ll check the web or TV for news and weather. In the car I’ll listen to AM for the same. If I’m wearing a portable device, it’s probably because I wish to GET AWAY from news and stuff like that. If you need stock updates you might be better off using a Blackberry and that’s only if your job requires it. If you’re a just a normal consumer and use a portable music device for stock info… you REALLY need to get unconnected and find something better to do with your time.

  16. Sum Jung, I would also like to see support for AM. The signal (range) can be much better and that can be especially important for people away from big cities. AM programming is also different. Some do still broadcast in stereo – for the few AM stereo receivers still out there.

  17. Ordered mine 15 minutes after the keynote – Got it on Thursday. It’s great – the FM part works great. Two things – however – there is no way to use presets (it does remember your last station) and there is no way of tuning/seeking with the remote. You’d expect there to be a way to seek using the forward/back buttons on the iPod’s scrollwheel as well. You have to manually scrub for stations – meaning it helps to know what stations you’re looking for. The plus side is that it drains the battery slower (I believe) due to it not accessing the hard drive as much. It’s a FM tuner. Pure and simple.
