I ran safari with MacRumorsLive and MadDailyNews side by side during the whole event and let them automatically refresh. MacRumorsLive updated every 60 seconds without a hitch, MacDailyNews failed to refresh a number of times and was 3 -4 min behind on most subjects. Probably because MDN has more hits…. but still.
QuickTime Pro 7.0.4 just became available through Software Update. You’ll need it to take advantage of new iLife ’06 features.
… That’s it?? A lame name-change to a laptop brand that was essentially passed over last upgrade cycle to make this one look ‘fantabulous’? Of course dual core CPUs with faster FSBs are going to be orders of magnatude faster than what came before – even in the iMac. Where’s the REALLy big news? Everything else jabbered about was info we could have gotten from a quarterly update conference call!
Look, I’m sure they’re fine products, and I know Jobs’ RDF is all-powerful, but this really is pushing the boundaries. The consumer electronics show definitely had more going on than this.

Now that the iWeb tour is working: “*iWeb publishing requires Internet and webserver access (.Mac recommended).”
So it doesn’t look like iWeb requires a .Mac account. It will just work more seamlessly with it. Nonetheless, I don’t see that iWeb can work with an existing web site and existing web pages. It looks like it has taken the cheesy RapidWeaver and Sandvox route of trying to cram everything into templates. Oh well, I had hope. Back to Xcode.

For a brief moment there, Apple’s market cap exceeded Dell’s. At $81+, Apple was worth about $68B; and at $31.25, Dell was about $66B.
Okay, it’s 3pm ET, and just looked again, and Dell is $31.09 and worth $65.6B.

what a let down. Where is that cool “one more thing” that blows everyone away? I get the idea of having it be about Intel today but the iMac and MacBook Pro are just not exciting enough.
If they are this much ahead of schedule with introducing new Intel based Macs then maybe we’ll see the entire product range change during 2006. If so we should see quite a few more announcements this year.

So… it wasn’t what you were expecting. But let us all know how in ANY way is it possible for Dell or Microsoft to be happy about today’s keynote. I’m sorry, but I must have missed Dell and Microsoft’s earth shattering announcements today… or in the last several.. ummmm… well…. years.
All we ever see from Dell or Microsoft is their visions (or Vista) for the future… what are they delivering today?
Sizewell, not to defend Dell, but they already announced dual core laptops would be available the beginning of February.
I think a lot of us are a bit disappointed because we were expecting something new and exciting. Great that the PowerBook, I mean the MacBook Pro goes Intel. It is surprising that the iMac went Intel since it just got upgraded 3 months ago. But I for one am disappointed that the Mac mini hasn’t been upgraded yet. Maybe it will happen soon.
So, we can deduce that g5 imacs were actually a half to as third as fast as new pc’s. What books do you guys read while waiting for your computer to finish its job?
Sure, Dell and everybody else has announced dual-core intel laptops, but none can touch the MacBook in terms of the overall package. It is extremely thin, solid, nice looking, and light. It has decent graphics while maintaining a thin and light body. It runs Mac OS X and Windows. It has a decent price. Dude.
Look at those G5 iMac vs intel iMac benchmarks. It looks to me like the G5 and the Intel Core CPUs are pretty much neck and neck, so in a way we just got dual-CPU G5 PowerBooks. Quite a step up from single-CPU G4 PowerBooks, eh?
Perhaps there is another event coming in a month?

Look again at those G5 iMac vs intel iMac benchmarks, and you’ll see that the G5 is about the same speed as a single core Intel Core CPU, which have been shown to be roughly on-par with Athlon64 CPUs per Mhz.
The only Macs which have been lagging in performance have been the PowerBooks.

Remember, Apple did not start any rumors. Apple unlike any other company, delivers whats ready and not what they think will be ready so you en up getting a good working product that is not rushed.

MacRumors certainly had more traffic than MacDailyNews. They were just more prepared, they had like 6 servers just for the keynote.
I wonder if that Burst lawsuit announced a couple of days ago held some things back – like the macmini or the “new” iPod video type announcements?

The only reason I can think of no Shuffle announcement is that there is a huge stockpile somewhere or a bottleneck.
Dells happy because the Apple laptops are in the same price range as their similarly based new intel laptops (announced last week). And like Dells they are not available yet.
Dells happy because no new minimac media center or “blow us away” video streaming store announcement.
Same with Google and Microsoft regarding the video on demand thing. They are happy. Gives them more time.

The new Dell Core Duo laptop starts at 7.94 lbs (and goes up if you add the DVD-burner!). It’s big and ugly. And costs 2299 and 2999 for the 1.83GHz. Compared that to the MacBook Pro at $2499 and 5.6 lbs!
Some of my predictions didn’t come true – no Mac mini, no iBook, no new Shuffle, no movies on iTMS. mini and iBook replaced by iMac and MacBook Pro. Guess Apple plans to milk each new product for everything its worth, which from a PR point of view, is very smart. Just like they did in Sep, and Oct last year.
Wonder if the amazing iPod/Mac/iTMS sales news from last quarter affected holding back some stuff to work on it some more. At this rate, Apple should blow through $100 easily, and its market value will zoom way above Dell.
And it keeps the rumor mills going. And guess this just means that some special red curtain events are coming in Feb (iTMS) and Mar (iPod) and Apr (iBook)!

…with the Dell you also get viruses, a crappy OS, crappy software and a higher total cost of ownership.

A 8lbs laptop compared to a under 6lbs laptop? Lug that extra couple of pounds around the airport for awhile, along with the extra size of a 17″ laptop and tell me which is a better deal if you travel a lot…

The 7800 Go is in a different class than the x1600 is.
NVidia is making the “7600 Go” to compete with the x1600; the “7800 Go” competes with the x1800 chipset, and the “7800 GTX Go” crushes anything ATI has for laptops.
The ATI x1600 Mobility scores about 3800 in 3DMark2005, while the “7800 Go” gets about 5800, using default settings.

I found the same thing from your link above. I don’t know folks … this doesn’t really seem to be the kind of earthshaking improvement most of us expected. The price is not good, the name is even worse (Mac Book Pro???) which is doubly bad since the laptop itself looks exactly like the PowerBook. And the performance …
It’s clearly better than the final PowerBook, but again that was to be expected given the tepid ‘upgrade’ the PowerBook was given last year. Yet is that ‘3x better’ claim for this new Macintel laptop from the CPU, or the chassis built around it? I mean, PCIx, a much better GPU, way faster FSB, Serial ATA – all of these are all things that could have been done to the PowerBook a year ago (including adding a dual core G4 processor in the same speed range). And where are the battery life estimates?! I’ve been on the webpage and have seen nothing there touting any improvement on that front, and wasn’t that supposed to be one of the main benefits from going Intel? In any event, I’ll certainly be interested to see what the independent performance numbers bear out.
I know I’m gonna get flamed for this, especially since I’ve never been completely on board with the whole transistion anyway, but while I love the fact that the PowerBook/MacPro has gotten a nice boost, I just don’t see the improvement being a result of the new alliance with Intel. Apple could have accomplished 80% of this with even the crappy single core G4 they stuck with last year, and been able to match Dell on price too, since G4 is a much cheaper CPU.
In addition, I too was expecting more regarding other products and services – something more surprising ro exciting. Honestly, this is the first Macworld Keynote that’s ever left me lukewarm.

Those links from Laff Topf are kind of reassuring. The Acer is using the x1400 graphics, which is pretty gimpy for games. Sony stuff is typically even more expensive than Apple stuff, and Sony laptops are known for having gimpy graphics.
I don’t know. I think that the MacBooks are going to be the sweet spot in laptops – whether you’re using Mac OS X or Windows XP, either will run great on the MacBooks I’m sure. If they had any faster graphics or CPU they couldn’t be so thin. Maybe I’ll save up for the rev.2 MacBooks that will have 2Ghz, x1800 graphics and Blu-ray optical drives. Woohoo!
The Dell 9400 is a lot of bang for the buck, and it handily beats the MacBook in performance (up to 2Ghz dual-core, 7800 Go) but the fact remains that it is a big thick ugly slab of plastic. The screens on those new Dells are really bright, but they have super-duper-ultra glare. It’s basically a mirror finish. You can easily see everything going on behind you in the screen reflection, which would absolutely drive me nuts.
I can’t wait to see some benchmarks on http://www.barefeats.com in February, and some MacBook running Windows XP benchmarks too, since I would want to dual-boot one of those things for games.
