“The personal computing world has been abuzz over the past week with claims Apple Computer is planning to follow up its phenomenally successful iPod music player with a ‘video-pod’ portable device,” David Frith writes for Australian IT. “Like many Apple rumours, it sounds unlikely at first: chief executive Steve Jobs has previously downplayed speculation along these lines, saying he can’t see much of a market for the concept. Mobile music is one thing, mobile video quite another.”
“Watching movies on a tiny screen seems less than compelling, and viewing while jogging – let alone driving – could be hazardous to both your health and that of others,” Frith writes. “On the other hand, last week’s reports first surfaced in The Wall Street Journal, which earlier scored a major scoop with news that Apple was in talks with Intel on moving the Macintosh to the Pentium platform… Given the accuracy of the Apple-Intel story, many analysts are speculating that the WSJ has a Deep Throat in the upper echelons at Apple’s HQ at No 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California – and therefore the video-pod story is right too.”

What Deep Throat???
Jobs notified IBM on Friday. IBM called WSJ and told them about the Intel switch that was going to happen on Monday.
I believe it
I think people are missing the point of a video iPod. It isnt necessarily a device for watching video while you are running or jogging or whatever, although you could watch it on a small screen. It is a device for being able to take your video with you. Go to a friends house, hey lets watch the new blah blah movie. You plug into their tv or computer and there ya go.
Hammer,
You’ve got it nailed!
The video iPod will flop as bad as the Shuffle.
Can’t wait! =P
then they’re on purpose. Apple and Steve want the press to get some info early. As long as they control what and when.
hammer is right, but I’d add that a video iPod would be pretty slick for video podcasts. wake up in the morning and your iPod is loaded with sportcenter, the latest news, etc. for you to watch on the commute or during a break in the day.
This is where the subscription model may work very well, no? An iTunes-ish store where you can buy, or rent movies as long as you pay a fee?
I’m a movie buyer, or at least have been. I’ve gotten quite a pile of dvds over the years. It’s just now dawning on me that when the tech upgrades, I’m stuck with all the old stuff. I would love the chance to access tons of films, though and not have to worry that years down the road, my pile of ‘vinyls’ are collector’s pieces…
My $.02.
How can anyone think the Shuffle is a flop? It instantly took over as the market leader in flash based MP3 players when it was released.
It also doubled iPod sales increasing the rate at which new customers for iTMS are added.
If that is a failure – what is your criteria for success?
but I want the model with 250GB
” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
have always libeled Apple as a failure, a niche product, a toy computer (because there were not so many games for it :D), an expensive gadget, a company on the brink of a failure. Even today with a couple stellar years behind there are still people talking about Apple and using terms like ‘flop’, ‘failure’, ‘doomed’ etc.
It is pretty much as a constant as Plank’s ‘h’, speed of light ‘c’, the unified atomic mass ‘u’, Boltzmann’s ‘z’, Avogadro’s ‘Na’: The % of Apple bashing in any average week in magazines, journals and blogs.
That’s right, SG. Then I wouldn’t have to stay up until midhinght to catch up on the sports of the day.
Also, if you could plug your iPod into your car to listen to music, shouldn’t you also be able to plug into into your car’s DVD entertainment system?
Awww yeeeeeaaah!

When your only tool is a hammer, all problems begin to resemble nails
Nope. The fact that they will share the same brand for their CPU does not make a computer running OS X the same as one running Windows. Exactly the same way a today’s PC running Windows is affected by VISTA (Viruses, Infections, Spyware, Trojans, Adware) while the very same PC running Linux is not.
Since computers must be too difficult a topic for many, it is equivalent to believe that an Audi 8 is the same as a VW Jetta because they are made by the same automotive group, or that a Porsche convertible is the same as a VW Beetle convertible because they share components, even in the engine.
I recenlty flew to Vegas…took my PSP with me…I watched a movie on it while I flew out (the in flight movie stunk).
I’d prefer to take my Video iPod if it existed. I’d like to carry my iMovie’s I’ve made on it – to show it to friends on their TVs.
Jobs is sharp – he won’t let video slip by – but until he’s ready to do it right – he’ll spread misinformation about how it’s wrong. Come on, even today Apple says they make nothing on selling songs…you gotta make a little on selling 500 million tunes?
if you think that the iVideo store is all about a iVideo Pod, then you’re thinking is small.
Its going to be about much more than a video iPod.. much more. Think about what iTMS has done to CD sales. The iVideo store will do this, plus rid us of Blockbuster in the long run.
How about using the video ipod to watch those videos in your on care video system.
Mr. Bill…
it won’t be the 3″ shit that MS is touting.. that would be hypocritical.. the screen has to get bigger before we can talk about this..
iPod HD
None of you truly see the potential. This is NOT about the video iPod, even though one will come out. This is not about the store, which inevitibly will come out as well. This is about some other media device/software. Apple is notorious for creating a flawless setup and checking all aspect of the interface. iPod+iTMS+Airport+Airport Express = perfect setup for audio. Everyone is right that the video iPod is too small to watch regularly. The video feature wont be included as a seperate iPod (maybe at first) but as an addition to the regular iPods like the iPod Photo. The iTMS will include the videos because people dont want to use 2 progs to buy things. Once you see a new, faster wireless standard, one that is even more capable of streaming video, apple will release a new device like the Express. It all pieces together.
The iPod shuffle was a resounding success as a gateway product, driving consumers to the next iPod up the range.
I am sitting here in front of a 17″ lcd display on my iMac-videos look pretty sharp on it.
If I was travelling, my 14″ iBook screen would show a movie pretty decently, better than a 3 or 4″ screen.
iPod showing videos, don’t really care.
Good quality videos, fairly small downloads on my iMac or iBook for a fair price-now I am interested.
Ability to show it on the 42″ TV I have to fight the rest of my family for control over-Hmmmmmm
The iPod Photo was the obvious stepping stone to video. With the release of the PSP and iRivers which have video capabilities, Apple and Steve must have something up their sleeves.
Applebasher you are an idiot! Fact! You say you have always “libeled Apple as a failure, a niche product, a toy computer” and your reason for this? Because there are hardly any games for it!! Sheesh, it never amazes me that people still throw this chestnut into the fire. if u wanna play games go buy a playstaion or gameboy (notice how the names start with “play” and “game”) leave the serious work to the people who have proper computers that work, never crash, never get a virus and you can fix it yourself without any hassle. GROW UP, the industry does not revolve around how many vacuous games you can play on your computer, some of us have better things to do with our time, instead of learning some goddamn awful controls for the next big game , why not instead learn how to use a proper application than wasting 50/80 hours on a game that gives you nothing at the end of the day. My favourite “game” is Photoshop, i’ve been playing it for years and have still not completed it.
Anyway the iVideo Pod is intigruing, i’ve been waiting for a device like this since the dawn of the iPod, a device that can hold all my media, i can take it anywhere and still have my music, movies and data at all times. If it it was hot bootable, it would be even more incrediable. A Mini Mac Mini!!!!!!!
