Apple setting stage for Windows PC users to demand Mac OS X for any x86 PC?

“There is talk of [Apple] using a ‘trusted platform’ method of having the Intel version of OS X look for a proprietary chip before it will boot. This will ensure OS X will run only on Apple hardware. I look for Windows XP to be running on the Intel-powered Macs long before OS X runs on PCs. Apple senior vice president Phil Schiller said there are no plans to sell or support Windows on Intel-based Macs. But, he added, Apple would not actively preclude someone from running Windows on their Intel-based Macs,” Jim Rossman writes for The Dallas Morning News. “Mr. Schiller also reiterated Apple’s stance on running Mac OS X on PCs: ‘We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac.'”

Rossman writes, “Surprisingly, Dell chairman Michael Dell last week said that he would be interested in selling Dell computers preloaded with Mac OS X. ‘If Apple decides to open the Mac OS to others, we would be happy to offer it to our customers,’ he wrote in an e-mail to Fortune magazine.
This marks the first time a big-league PC maker has publicly stated a willingness to include the Mac OS. Usually, they’d be afraid of angering Microsoft, but Dell is so big it can afford to stand up to Microsoft.”

Rossman writes, “Early testers are saying the developer copy of Mac OS X for Intel will run on any PC. I think that might be on purpose. Apple wants the PC world to see how great OS X is on any platform. I bet once word gets out, Apple will sit back and wait for the PC world to demand OS X for PCs,” Jim Rossman writes for The Dallas Morning News.”

MacDailyNews Take: Rossman’s crystal ball obviously came from the same shop as Jeff Harrell’s and John Dvorak’s.

On June 11, Harrell wrote of the Mac OS X for Intel developer version (including the iLife apps, too) hitting piracy sites and running on non-Apple PCs, “This is the most awe-inspiring stealth marketing move I’ve ever seen… Apple’s giving their potential future customers a free taste, that’s what they’re doing. It’s a try-before-you-buy deal.”

Dvorak wrote on June 13, “Once the system stabilizes in the wild, Apple announces that it cannot do anything about the piracy situation and that it’s apparent that everyone wants this OS rather than Windows. It’s ‘the will of the public.’ Apple then makes the stupendous announcement that it will sell a generic boxed OS, ‘for the rest of you!'”

  1. Nice story, but the reality is that development Macs that use x86 CPUs are the only computers that can load x86 OS X. That is not to say that copies of the OS and applications are not on file sharing networks but only development macs can run them.

  2. well the reports i read say that this is incorrect . They tried to load the developers copy on 2 different standard type PC’s one of them being a Dell and niether would boot the Mactel boot up let alone start an install. I forgot the error message but it was something like incompatible hardware or something like that but not that exactly.. it just illuded to that fact

  3. When will these baseless stories end?!?!?!?

Just because they’ve swapped chips to be ones built by a chipmaker that makes chips for pcs too doesnt mean that apple are suddnely going to let go of their business model (that they’ve had since day one – apart from the dark days of the clones… and look what happened to those!)

Let it rest – i think all these stories should just be ignored from now on.

    yeah…’sure’

  4. As I said in another thread, I’m willing to bet that Apple will not license only OSX to other vendors, but will indeed license Mac hardware and software to vendors in an HP / iPod-style deal. Apple controls the hardware design, build it, and let 3rd party vendors stick Windows on it, so to not break their existing agreements with MS. If that happens, instant market share growth.

  5. Why not create a version of OS X that runs off a CD-ROM without needing to touch the hard drive? The would give Windows / Linux users a quick and easy welcome to OS X just like KNOPPIX does for Linux.

  6. I think it will be as Steve says, they want to do the whole widget. They also want to compete, OS X will run best on Apple hardware. If Dell was liscensed to sell Apple products, it would have to meet certain criteria like HP does. Knowing Dell though, he would do his own thing just like Steve and Bill do. It will be an exciting time.

  7. I think Apple can license their OS demanding a full price of the OS, not the discount price that MS does with the OEM…. If Apple charge 200 $ for every non Apple Mac OS X license it will be like the profit of the hardware

  8. “This marks the first time a big-league PC maker has publicly stated a willingness to include the Mac OS. Usually, they’d be afraid of angering Microsoft, but Dell is so big it can afford to stand up to Microsoft.”

Erm.. perhaps, but we already knew this… months ago Jobs was on the cover of Fortune, talking up Tiger, and mentioned that a few of the major PC box assemblers were humping his leg to get Tiger running on their boxes. That was huge.

Having Mr. Dell ask for Tiger is a very nice change for him… ironic, to say the least.

  9. It just seems that if Apple gives up control of the OS/hardware symbiotic relationship, OS X quickly becomes another Windows. Part of Windows problem is its trying to run on all these cheap, generic computers all using different setups, chips, etc. It would certainly still be secure, but I wonder if it would run as well or still be as user friendly on a PC… doubtful.

When will these baseless stories end?!?!?!?

Don’t forget, dear End It Now, the howls of protest and ridicule – FROM EVERYBODY! when one of this forum’s favourite enemies predicted that Apple would turn to Intel – and that was about a year ago.

The computer hardware market is strongly contested by a lot of of companies.
The OS market – huge and lucrative as it is – is dominated by one company, and Apple happens to have a better product than this company, and, with the change to Intel, is now in a position to compete with this company.

    The temptation will be great!

  11. Proprietary chip. If Apple can’t keep up with the demand, why not allow HP or Dell to purchase the chip and sell a dual boot machine. This way they would still have hardware control and not be responsible for all machines to run their system. At the same time Apple would still lead in design for a few dollars more.

  12. Guys think of the really big news. For years Mac users had to contend with PC users and debate the availability of software. “Windows has more software,” they would say. If Mactels can run Windows and all of its software, as well as, Mactels own software, who now can run more software?

How about PC’s are faster? Not anymore.

PC’s are cheaper. (Crap usually is). Macs will have features that can be compared to Dell’s and HP’s.

    Times, they are a changin.

  13. My money is on APPL… I can’t imagine how this can’t be a be a huge groth opportunity!

If anyone can provide a valid case against future growth, I’d love to hear it.

  14. Whoever cannot see this coming is ignorant to change. It is happening before your eyes and you can’t see the forest from the trees. Yes, Steve Jobs said that he will not license OS X, but he says that he won’t do things until he does it. I bet everyone here who thinks this will never happen also believed that Mac going on Intel was a rumor up until it was officially announced by Steve Jobs even when reliable sources said that it was true the weekend before.

This is not the clone days. OS X is superior. Apple is not as heavily reliant to computer hardware because of the iPod success. And apple stands to make much more opening OS X to everyone.

If you think that if Apple kept OS X only for Apple machines that they would dominate the market, you are dreaming.

The only way to dominate a market is to aggressively saturate it with superior product which they will when they license it to everyone.

I don’t believe Apple will become a software only company, but I do believe that most of their revenue will be because of it’s software influence.

They will remain strong in the hardware department because they offer the superior experience, mac hardware and mac software together, and they will license hardware like they are doing with the iPod.

Ask yourself the following question if you doubt me, but pretend that you are forced to make a computer purchase.

Which computer would I buy if my only choices were a Mac that could only run Windows or a Dell that could only run OS X?

I would choose the Dell unless I was dependent on Windows. Which would you choose?

    It is the software, stupid

Using Dell, HP, Sony etc… as distribution and marketing partners will be huge! Trust me on this one….Dell and company will advertise and distribute OS X on their machines with passion. For you psyche majors: “Microsoft just ain’t doing it for them, anymore.” They need posture to stand up to Microsoft, and OS X will give it to them. It is a win win situation for everyone.

  16. Another day, another the same story regurgitated by MDN.

Just think folks at least 365 days of reading the same story over and over….
remember the Bill Murray movie “Ground Hog Day”….
