I am familiar with Windows. Unfortunately for Microsoft and fortunately for me, I also use a Mac, so I can now see why and where Windows is sorely lacking. If I had never touched a Mac, I would be living in blissful ignorance – patching and crashing and wasting my life away in squalor.

The only Mac vs. anything debate worth having these days is against Linux. OSX won the “Who’s best” argument against XP when Jaguar was released.

99% of the 85% who use Windows made no choice at all. All they know is Windows. People who’ve really used both Mac and Windows operating systems for any reasonable amount of time almost always choose the Mac. It’s really quite simple. People who say they chose Windows actually chose nothing. Mac users, almost always, have had some contact with Windows (at work, school) and really have chosen the Mac over Windows. Windows people “chose” the one thing they know (Windows) against all the myths and lies they’ve heard about, but have no real experience of regarding the Mac.

I was talking to the administrative assistant (secretary) in my office the other day about the Mac. She wants to get a new computer for her house. I recommended the mini and she tells me “My husband told me you can’t check email on a Mac.”
This is the same woman that works 25 feet from me and sends me emails everyday and knows that I’m working on a Mac the entire time.
It’s not a matter of making people switch to the platform to make ourselves feel better, it’s almost our civic duty as decent human beings to inform them that there are alternatives to what they are familiar with.
The difference with Apple, is, were it to get as big as Microsoft, it would be more apt to handle it. They are not selling crap in the hopes of making enough money to fix all the bugs they know they’re going to find (as Microsoft did in the beginning, which they’re still paying for)… Apple already has the best product in features, security, and, as expensive as it may be, value.

Macs have about 10% installed base. Market share is currently around 4% as of last quarter.
I use Windows XP Pro at work everyday and OSX at home. XP isn’t that bad, though it doesn’t multitask worth a shit, but there is no way one could honestly say XP is the equal of OSX. And the gulf is only going to get wider.

You can’t switch some people even though the Mac is a superior product no matter how you examine it. I have owned both Macs and PC, and when you sit down behind a Mac, you have the confidence that it will just plain work without a hitch. Behind a PC, I was never as confident.
People who have chosen a PC simply have developed a relationship with the machine due to much of the upkeep, patching, reinstalling, virus quaranteening, and finger crossing they have to do. It’s like taking care of a sick animal. The Flourence Nightengale in them develops an attachment because the machine needs them.
As for me, I like the elegant power, the intuitive learning curve, the rock steady performance, and the virus free, malware free, spyware free environment of OSX. My machine doesn’t need me. It hums along on Panther doing what I bid, keeping my records, managing my photos and music, editing video, emailing, web surfing, and whatever else I need it to do.
Day after day, it works, and helps me work. Windows users, you have my compliments. You are needed.

I told him.. ehhh.. it doesn’t really work in this, but in iTunes it names the songs and albums automatically, that’s pretty basic feature.. furthermore.. playlists, smart playlists are way way nicer in iTunes…

Windows XP drove me to get a Mac. It sound like a good OS, until you try to use it features, which sometimes work, and sometimes don’t. The wizards are more trouble than good. The interface could be more screwed up, the networking alone is a disaster. Window, after window, after window, I swear it goes on for ever and you never can find what your looking for.
Put it this was Mac OSX may be OK but XP is horrible if you try to do anything other than run one program at a time, and just stick to the real basic stuff. Try to use any power user features and it becomes, to quote Forest Gump, “….a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.”
Apple did nothing to attract me as a customer, Windows did everything to cause to look for an alternative.

Don’t underestimate the comfort zone factor. Most people just want to learn enough to do what they want to get done and thats it. It usually takes a lot of pain to break people out of their routines. The fact that we are seeing an increase in switchers when this involves people having to leave their comfort zone and learn how to do something a new way speaks volumes about the amount of pain windows is causing.

It’s almost possible to own both platforms nowdays, forget Pear PC and Virtual PC. Get a PC made up without a cd drive. Get a mac mini and stick it on top of the PC. Get 1 monitor/keyboard/mouse and one of those switcher things so you can alternate between the two of them. There are some things the Mac can do way better than PC. And naturally in a PC dominated world the PC can be far superior to the Mac in many ways simply because it’s more compatable as more people have PCs.

Since you are clueless, I’ll explain by example:
My girlfirend is FORCED to use a pile of horseshit at work and is FORCED to have a corresponding pile of horseshit at home as part of her work. (For those keeping score, both piles of horseshit have the word “Dell” on them, whatever that means.) Anyway, the company she works for pays for both piles of horseshit, but my friend hates the stink and wishes her company had a clue about computers, for there is not a single thing she is required to do on either pile of horseshit that she could not do much better, quicker, and with less fuss, stress, and frustration, on Mac OS X. Her company mistakenly believes that piles of horseshit with the word “Dell” on them are cheaper than those strange gadgets that look like something from a sleek science fiction movie running something called Mac OS X, but her company is not counting all of her wasted time wrestling with both piles of horseshit, or IT expenses, or the down-time they’ve had from malware in their shortsighted calculations, things that would be non-issues with that “other OS” some affectionately refer to as Panther.
In another room of her house, in a nice room, she has a beautiful G5, with a beautiful matching 23 inch Apple display running Mac OS X. This is where she does her own personal computing (along with healthy amount of f****** my brains out using the Aquarium screensaver as our only light).
So, it’s one user, using both operating systems, one forcibly, one eagerly, and three computers. The ratio of PC to Mac market share for unit sales in this microcosm would be 2 to 1. But the installed user-base would be 1 to 1. Understand? Does that fit on your task bar? And that’s not even counting the fact that again, one OS is used FORCIBLY, and one is used as an actual PREFERENCE.
I hope this clears up for the difference between “units sold” and “installed user-base”. It’s meaningful. Accept it. You don’t need the permission of the PC press to use the meaningful numbers instead of the conveniently misleading ones. Really, you don’t.

What’s a Group IV subject?
When talking about market share…does anyone know the percent market share that Apple has of the education market?
At one time, maybe 5 to 8 years ago, Apple had more than 50% market share of the educational market. After that, it dipped down to the low 40% or so, for a couple years. In the last few years, I think the Apple total educational market share has slipped well below 40%.
The education market share should still be much higher than the 4% to 10% of total computer usage (business, educational, and home markets combined). Does anyone have the most recent educational market share stats?

I know its crazy that WMP doesnt do this automatically. But there are these things called settings. And well, they let you change settings!
Tools / Library / Checkbox = Check on Rename music files using rip music settings…Geez. Now does that seem difficult?
I use both OS X and XP. Both work awesome, Both do the job.
Both have been stable and secure for us. Both cost about the same.
We dont buy dells, we build instead. There is a huge difference between a Mac and a Dull (a mac wins hands down). I’ve used them both for awhile now. Some things are better done on one platform, others are done better on the other..Who Cares? As long as it gets the job done. And so far its been good.

BOTH platforms are grea. Windows XP is a fine operating system. It is rock solid, just like OSX. THe only problem with it is that IE is integrated into the OS and that is the main reason it is so vunerable to attacks.
If you use XP offline, then you will most likely NEVER have a problem with it. In fact, you would probably enjoy it as much as OSX.
Overall, OSX IS a much more elegant OS. Personally, I favor the GUI over XP. But, that doesn’t mean it is “better” than XP.

So please don’t laugh your asses of when he says things like “BOTH platforms are great”, or “XP is just as solid as OS X”, or, and this one’s a doosie, “If you use XP offline, then you will most likely NEVER have a problem with it. In fact, you would probably enjoy it as much as OSX”.
Having to use XP offline? LMAO!

In closing, Chris, I have to say that I’d wager a big pile of cash that you don’t have much, if any, experience with OS X. But don’t worry, we’re not going speak the truth anymore seeing as how it upsets you. Okay?
I also work in an environment with both Mac and Windows
platforms client and server. Yes, we’ve had our share of hair pulling days with both systems. Windows definitely needs to do something about security in the next iteration of it’s OS. In terms of general reliability of the OS i also would say the NT platform is rock solid.
Mac OS X is essentially a flavor of Unix and benifits
from the years of development that has gone into making
it a reliable OS. Let’s give credit where credit is due. Yes, Apple has done a great job in bringing a Unix based operating system to the desktop but, in my experience any system can be comprimised if not configured correctly out of the box. Apple users tout the operating system as being impervious to virus infection. I know the whole issue of security through obscurity has been debated but, if Apple gains serious
market share they won’t be crowing about their great
security for to long. Also, if they ever hope to obtain any serious market share they’ll have to court
the business enterprise market not the home user!!
Business, from my readings, is definitely not turning
away from Microsoft towards Mac OS X but, Linux. A
truly Open Source operating system.

No they don’t. That’s a strawman argument – arguing against a case that was never made in the first place. Since you’re not listening, what Mac users actually DO tout is that Mac OS X is far less vulnerable than Windows. And we tout it because it is true. And no, it is not through obscurity. Like it or not, Mac OS X is inherently more secure than Windows XP. Again, I did NOT say or imply that it was “impervious”, just far less vulnerable.
i can guarentee you that pretty much EVERY student at yale has used mac osx at one time or another. the way the computer labs are set up, macs are on one side, pcs on the other. if you have a specific application you need to run on a particular platform, you wait for a turn at the one you want. for most students with 10 minutes between classes, you plop down at the first available machine just to do your email.
