Mac vs. Windows debate is again ringing all over campus

“Many of the great pop-culture debates of our time involve intense rivalries — Yankees versus Red Sox, Britney versus Christina, Ford versus Chevy. Among these great discussions stands one that has shaped the technological world: Macs versus PCs,” Daniel Holevoet writes for Yale Daily News. “Ten years ago, the computer world was different than today, and it seemed like Microsoft had bested its rivals. Beleaguered was a popular phrase used to describe Apple, and Linux was less than a year old and unknown outside small circles of avid coders.”

“But today, the decision is not so clear-cut, and Apple has made a much larger comeback in Yale student and faculty computing than its 10 to 12 percent national market share would indicate. According to Yale Information Technology Services’ registration records, nearly 20 percent of University students and 33 percent of faculty choose Macs over Windows PCs,” Holevoet writes. “With a reinvented, cutting-edge operating system and a cool, sleek design, Apple is clawing its way to technological equality on campus. Products like iPod and iTunes have transformed the Apple brand into a status symbol as much as a technological tool, and alternative platforms such as Linux have moved out of the shady realm of hackers and into the public eye. The debate is renewed.”

MacDailyNews Take: This is a fun article to read, with one Mac user quoted as saying, “I have an Apple bumper sticker on my car, a patch on my hat and a poster in my room. You don’t find that kind of loyalty with Windows users, and there is a reason why.” After reading the article, we’re not sure if the writer and/or people quoted in the article understand that Apple’s Mac OS X is UNIX-based. Let us know what you think. There’s even one student who said insists that “his Windows system was adequate for his needs and purchasing a Mac was not worth it” and that he is “more comfortable using Microsoft programs and prefers Windows Media Player to Apple’s iTunes,” as if to offer proof that one can be “booksmart” enough to get into Yale and still display a certain lack of other smarts, not to mention taste. Meaning: if you haven’t used both Mac OS X and Windows XP, how much is your opinion as to which OS you prefer really worth? The comfort of familiarity, self-imposed ignorance, and some people’s resistance to change would seem to be some of Microsoft’s last best weapons against the superior Mac solution.

In a world without fences and walls, who needs Gates and Windows?

  1. All of you ManGoo™ / SploogeSwallower™ whiny, fudgepacking, gay Mac lovin’ fruitcakes need to stop hugging trees and plumbing male anus and get a real computer with a superior Intel CPU and Windows XP Professional. Mac fags make me want to puke – you’re all like, like, like… 1980’s Eurotrash. Quit lubing up your browneyes for man meat and learn to use a real man’s PC!

  2. “If he really had used Mac OS X, why would he be singing the praises of Windows?”

    Fork Ball: RTFA.

The poor guy isn’t a MS drone pushing PR down our throats…he’s a poor student who finds a PC “adequate for his needs.” Why must be switch? Why must he spend money on something he doesn’t feel is neccessary?

This is not the solution folks. If we want “switchers”, encourage those who dislike their current computing environment, not chastise those who are content.

  3. I was talking to the administrative assistant (secretary) in my office the other day about the Mac. She wants to get a new computer for her house. I recommended the mini and she tells me “My husband told me you can’t check email on a Mac.”
This is the same woman that works 25 feet from me and sends me emails everyday and knows that I’m working on a Mac the entire time.
It’s not a matter of making people switch to the platform to make ourselves feel better, it’s almost our civic duty as decent human beings to inform them that there are alternatives to what they are familiar with.
The difference with Apple, is, were it to get as big as Microsoft, it would be more apt to handle it. They are not selling crap in the hopes of making enough money to fix all the bugs they know they’re going to find (as Microsoft did in the beginning, which they’re still paying for)… Apple already has the best product in features, security, and, as expensive as it may be, value.

  4. Stantheman, I did RTFA.

And I defy you or anyone else to produce more than 1 or 2 out of every 100 people who’ve used both Mac OS X and Windows that pick Windows over the Mac.

People who used both generally pick Mac in overwhelming numbers. People who know only Windows, “choose” Windows.

  5. Used both – from the original Mac Finder and Windows 3.1 to the current offerings of both. Will always choose the Mac OS.

Ron needs to get a bigger thesaurus. Or is he compensating for an embarassing lack of something else, perhaps?

  6. “But today, the decision is not so clear-cut, and Apple has made a much larger comeback in Yale student and faculty computing than its 10 to 12 percent national market share would indicate.

Since when does Apple have 10 to 12 percent national market share? Get a life and a good article.

  7. “Mac fags who suck down baby batter like it’s man pudding, just love to put down Windows. I love Windows and I will never try a Mac because I don’t want to turn into a hairy-man-ass-loving, tree-hugging, boner-biting skin-flutist. Hippie, commie, pinko, throat-sausage-loving, ass-stuffing Mac queers make me want to stay as far away from fruity Mac toys as possible. I’ll keep upgrading Windows, thank you.”

Then why come here? Get off your mom & do something useful with your time.

  8. Ron, drill a hole in yer head with a tube steak to release some of the decay. You have so much dick on yer mind it’s amazing. When you close yer eyes you must see dancing penises everywhere.. surrounding you in the warmth of what missing from yer dead daddy. Dancing penises schlacking yer head with man-goo. What you need is a man to make some good loving to you. A big man with a big penis should put a bag over your head and hit it with a mallet. Penis penis penis! That’s all you closeted homos think about! Be a man and take the dick!

  9. I use Windows XP Pro at work everyday and OSX at home. XP isn’t that bad, though it doesn’t multitask worth a shit, but there is no way one could honestly say XP is the equal of OSX. And the gulf is only going to get wider.

  10. You can’t switch some people even though the Mac is a superior product no matter how you examine it. I have owned both Macs and PC, and when you sit down behind a Mac, you have the confidence that it will just plain work without a hitch. Behind a PC, I was never as confident.

People who have chosen a PC simply have developed a relationship with the machine due to much of the upkeep, patching, reinstalling, virus quaranteening, and finger crossing they have to do. It’s like taking care of a sick animal. The Flourence Nightengale in them develops an attachment because the machine needs them.

As for me, I like the elegant power, the intuitive learning curve, the rock steady performance, and the virus free, malware free, spyware free environment of OSX. My machine doesn’t need me. It hums along on Panther doing what I bid, keeping my records, managing my photos and music, editing video, emailing, web surfing, and whatever else I need it to do.

Day after day, it works, and helps me work. Windows users, you have my compliments. You are needed.

  11. WMP over iTUNES?!

my roomate is using WMP.. man that blows chunks.. he plays one song over and over, and still hasn’t figured out how to do playlists on there..

I’m not a total religious freak when it comes to Apple.. but.. I mean.. come on.. he ripped a CD in WMP and WMP didn’t even copy the song titles.. WHAT THE F? IT says Song 1, Song2, Song 3 etc, what a useless piece of crap.

I told him.. ehhh.. it doesn’t really work in this, but in iTunes it names the songs and albums automatically, that’s pretty basic feature.. furthermore.. playlists, smart playlists are way way nicer in iTunes…

He just won’t use it because it’s by Apple.. his loss..

  12. Mac queers make me want to stay as far away from fruity Mac toys as possible. I’ll keep upgrading Windows, thank you.

    Huh? George Bush is gay?

I will agree with you on one thing though: you WILL keep upgrading Windows…

Congratulations on being duped by MS’s “we’re almost there” and Intel’s “we’ve got bigger numbers”marketing squad.
