  1. On an Aside, I see that Apple is at least pricing their iPod Euro for Dollar. Not exactly fair, but then it does include the VAT here in GMany

(btw. Bush is a tit. for security reasons, Frankfurt Airport was closed down, there have been about 200 km of traffic jamsm and almost an entire city was closed down, and the Rhine was closed to all traffic for a 25 km stretch)

  2. Can anyone tell me what the “shuffle songs” in the main menu actually does. I just updated my 3gen iPod, and if I’m in a playlist playing a song, then go back to the main menu and click “shuffle songs”, the iPod goes to my library and shuffles that music instead of going back to the playlist and shuffling that. Is there any way around that using the main menu for shuffle?

    Hey g

That would be a great feature but at the moment you cannot shuffle within a playlist.
You’ll have to put the music you want to shuffle in one playlist and make that the Library on your iPod (update manually).
    Good luck with that!

  4. Yeah, so now it works when I write something as a test.

    Larry,

You have to activate the settings on your iPod in the settings menu under “Main Menu.”

    Kath,

Yeah, thanks for the info, but I won’t be doing that at the moment. I just don’t like how you have to manually go into the settings and set to shuffle songs instead of being able to do it with the shuffle option now on the main menu.

You’re not serious, right? I shuffle within my playlists all the time.

  6. Playlist specific shuffling:

make a smart playlist with all the songs you want. Switch the playlist to ‘number’ view (the first column). Hit the shuffle button at the bottom left. Synch to iPod.

To shuffle up again the next day just toggle the shuffle option again and ta-da, freshly shuffled playlist.

I have done this for a year now. It takes a couple of seconds each morning but once you get into the habit of doing it life is good.

I agree that this option should be on the iPod somehow. Somehting like holding down the play button when you select a playlist to shuffle it up would work.

  7. Much ado about shuffling:

(Note: I’m speaking from a 1G iPod v1.5 perspective, but this is probably relevant to most version of iPod software after running this update)

I also cannot understand why there is a “Shuffle Songs” command from the main menu. To do the same thing all the time I merely press the play button from the Main Menu. The Shuffle mode must be selected in Settings for this to work.

This also works with playlist shuffling. No need for setting up a pre-randomized order like mike k. suggested. Just select the desired playlist using the scroll wheel and press Play.

If the Shuffle Songs command irritates you, you can stop if from displaying in Settings > Main Menu. This customizing of the main menu is a nice feature. I’ve added Clock and Calendars to my main menu for quick access.

the problem with this solution is that it is all or nothing.

For example, during my daily travels i love to listen to a random selection of songs from a set sample. I like to shuffle up all my non-classical, non-live, non-Podcast material (i.e regular songs).

However, when i go the gym, i have a set order i like to coincide with the tough parts of my workout. So across the board shuffle would suit my first playlist but not my second.

This is why playlist specific shuffling is needed. Neither the new/updated ‘main menu’ shuffle option, nor the preexisting ‘settings’ option permits this flexibility.

  9. No problem Larry.

Ok, another gripe about the iPod software.

First, they need to fix the damn shuffle commands, as has been commented before.

Secondly, they need to add an upgrade where the “sleep timer” can go into the main menu. I know it’s only one click through the clock menu, but still. It should be an option. Every night I go to bed, I use the timer so that my iPod shuts off. And every night I have to click through the menus to get to it and set it.

  10. ATTENTION PEOPLE WITH 3G IPOD:

To enable the shuffle from the main menu you need to goto into your ipods settings > main menu > enable the shuffle option.

Poof! Shuffle on the main screen of your 3G iPod. Worked for me after this update ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

Thanks apple this is long overdue.
