“In 2005, IBM plans to bring a significant feature from higher-end servers to the next generation of its PowerPC 970 processor line used in Apple Computer machines and Big Blue’s own blade servers,” Stephen Shankland reports for CNET News. “The next-generation chip will have technology that lets it run multiple operating systems simultaneously, said Karl Freund, vice president of IBM eServer pSeries. Doing so allows a computer to handle more jobs at the same time and to be used more efficiently.”
MacDailyNews Note: If that name sounds vaguely familiar, he’s no relation, that we know of, to Karl Freund, the “I Love Lucy” director of photography (among other things) who, along with Desi Arnaz, developed the 3-camera system of filming television shows that’s used to this day. Freund died in 1969.
“The technology, called partitioning, relies on a concept called virtualization that breaks the hard link between an operating system and the underlying hardware. Partitioning is available today only on servers using IBM’s higher-end Power4 and Power5 processors and in competing server designs from Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and Intel,” Shankland reports. “Freund declined to comment on when in 2005 the chip is scheduled to arrive but said it’s “pretty late in the design cycle now.” Apple plans to use it, he added.”

eServer is a brand that covers multiple sub-brands (pSeries=UNIX, iSeries=AS/400, etc).
It is similar to Macintosh being the general brand and PowerMac, iMac and eMac being sub-brands.

If I don’t allow 2:49:04 PM firefox.exe TCP adsvr.adknowledge.com 8000 Block Once – then I will immediately receive a port scan from adknowledge.com and will effectively shut down my browser due to Outposts attack detection setting to block intruder (I will have to disable the feature or allow the ad) – BUT then it will go as far as this!! (using other IP’s to mask?) for instance techzonez does not even use adknowledge.com – yet, somehow adknowlege is using the name to mask a port scan.
Is there a solution besides disabling or do I have to allow the ad? Maybe i’m doing something wrong?

I only receive this popup at this site (only one tab open in firefox). Allow once = popups repeatedly asking for permission – everytime you refresh – Deny or close rule = instant port scan
I added a bunch of ad servers to my hosts file (double-checking against the Activity window in Safari). The adknowledge stuff is a secondary link from one of the primary adserver links that I blocked.
Only the direct advertisers (like those from this domain and apple) remain!

er, what are you guys talking about! I’m running Safari with “Block Pop-Up Windows” turned on as are most of the readers (I think) on this site.

It depends whether or not you like audio advertisements coming from a company that port-scans your computer if you block thier first attempt (see posts above).
Get rid of the audio ads MDN or you’ll find your visitors go elsewhere.

Okay, I’ve been on MDN for about 20 minutes now and I just heard a commercial. What the hell was that! Did my curser have to go over an ad or did it just start by itself.
I don’t mind sound when my curser goes over an ad, but it better stop when I move my curser off that ad!
I have a few questions.
First, would this be a revised G5, a G6, or something else.
Second, why in gods name does MDN know who the director of photography was for “I love lucy” I mean, I own every single episode (including the lost pilot) on VHS and i don’t even know that stuff… someone has too much time on their hands….
Third, I have iTunes for audio, not ads posted on MDN. Shame….

concerning the ads and unwanted connections. Do you guys have the firewall on and Block popup windows checked, do you have shared on?
How do you have to set your connection/Mac in order to see that happens?
I get nothing from adkwhatever, nor do I hear any commercial even with mouse hovering on ads. Tried them all. No connections started nor audio ads.
Not jocking: nothing happens here.
