“In the past year, tantalizing signs of an Apple revival have emerged. In the education sector, where a few years ago Apple looked like roadkill due to Dell’s rapid advances, Macs are making a nifty comeback. In higher education, Apple has racked up stellar 40% shipment growth in each of the last three quarters, and its market share has crept up nearly 1%, to roughly 11%, according to IDC.,” Alex Salkever reports for BusinessWeek.
“In the market for sales to K-12, Apple’s laptops have gained 3.2% market share over the past year — even as desktop sales have slipped. That’s crucial because the education markets are swiftly ditching desktops for notebooks. Further, young scholars are tomorrow’s computer buyers, and the more they learn to love the Mac, the better that will be for Jobs & Co.,” Salkever reports.
“After years of Apple sales to the government and large corporations drifting aimlessly, the outfit has finally started to win a serious following there, too, based largely on its well designed and highly versatile rack-mounted servers… Apple has plenty of new irons in the fire as Jobs & Co. enter a period of promise and, perhaps, prosperity,” Salkever writes.

Rock on Apple. I know I will use their products until I can’t use them anymore.
Watchu talkin ’bout Willis!!?
Apple is a zero debt company already. any revenue brought in above production and marketing costs is ALL profit…
moo.
People are beginning to wake up…
All we need now is all those old fashioned IT bosses realising that there is an alternative to windows – that is better than windows.
Those guys have their heads permanently stuck in the sand!
Still – the next generation of IT bosses will be more open to change THAT IS GUARANTEED!
It’s the older generation of IT guys that need to be retired off and get some 20 year old wiz kid, who knows more than them anyway and is upto date on new ways to run the IT depts!!
I think it is inevitable that Mac will eventually take over. It’s just a matter of time. I hope I see it soon!
It’s not IT bosses that’ll have to change. After all, their power comes from how big the IT department is. It’s the CEOs and CFOs who are concerned over the bottom line and the continuity of their business.
what a great tuesday.
The big thing that would move Apple market share up is if IBM would bring out their faster chips NOW!
With intel having problems bumping up the speed of their chips and M$loft delaying 64.bit OS Apple could build up some converts and new sales….if (see IBM sentence above).
And apple bring out its 64.bit OS…
IT dept. support their users. Of course, the IT department of a company is necessarily larger in a windows world.
Now THAT’S what I like to see! Actual numbers showing an increase in marketshare! Sure, it’s only education right now, but this could filter into the consumer market, and maybe even the enterprise market.
I may be dreaming, but this is sweet news.
My school is considering giving macs to the students. I hope that it does since it’ll be my first mac!
Issuing PC laptops to students who will get connected to the internet would be a support nightmare.
Also Macs have another advantage in education. The ability to create PDF documents from any application with no additional software. Who needs MS Office compatibility?
Aas long as the IT people have a say in what gets bought they will be reluctant to specifiy Macs. After all, who is going to buy a product which requires less maintenance, and consequently less people. They have spent many years learning how to fix Windows systems, and would be reducing their organisation’s dependence on them!
This would be seen as a reduction in status (and hence, power). Until the financial people get the message that Macs are less expensive to maintain, the staus quo will remain
Red Wings suck…
No, No, No, don’t you see the beauty of it? Convert an office to XP from Mac’s equals instant profits! Those poor hapless saps that are used to things working are an easy mark. Think of the billable hours as you go from one disaster to the next. From one new virus to the next. It’s called job security. If I was a consultant, or smart IT admin, I would do the same. Gotta eat!!!
OOPS, that’s what I get for having to many Safari windows open…
C-weed:
“OOPS, that’s what I get for having to many Safari windows open…”
Did you mean “tabs” or “windows”? You should be using Safari’s tabs… much nicer than a zillion windows.
Is this it. Is this the first stage in the human races step to the next level of conciousnes/enlightenment ? mmmm… Don’t forget Longhorn is coming. Yeah it’s still MS but it might be better.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a mac user and always will be.
When I said ‘better’ above I meant better than anything MS running today. NOT nessesarily better than anything Mac that will be around when Longhorn come out.
You say you want a revolution….
