“International fashion house Gucci Group has pounced on the market opportunity inherent for third parties in the success of Apple Computer’s IPod music player–introducing its own designer IPod carrying case,” Jonny Evans reports for Macworld UK. “Available online through Gucci’s U.S. store, the IPod case is available in multiple colors and costs almost as much as an IPod–$195.”
“The case is available in this season’s Gucci colors–beige/ebony GG plus with dark brown leather trim, green/red/green web carrying handle, and silver hardware,” Evans reports. “Gucci’s product reflects the healthy market surrounding Apple’s product. And Gucci’s case may appeal to select high-profile IPod users, such as Victoria Beckham.” Full article here.
See the Gucci iPod case here.
The bag just looks like a piece of shit. Seriously what ipod user would want one of those. A custom grocery bag would look better than that for an ipod.
newmonkey – I think I tried to qualify that it wasn’t necessarily the same in different markets. I don’t dislike BMWs per se, but I don’t want to the guilt by association of a typical BMW driver as they are in UK. I think maybe the equivalent term is ‘jerkoff’ in the US.
Basically BMW drivers in the UK tend to be inconsiderate to other road users, think they own the road and also see the marque as a prestige status item rather than as a very well built car. Some might ascribe this to jealousy, but Merc drivers tend to be much friendlier road users.
Personally I see a car as a tool, and it’s a rapidly depreciating asset, so I go for the cheapest one that does the job. I really don’t care about performance or brand or looks. I have a small family and when I bought my car three years ago, after some consideration, bought a Renault Kangoo. People think it’s a ridiculous car, but they just don’t get it. It’s superb at doing what it’s meant to do, which his mainly short trips with kids and a huge load capacity for longer trips. The BMW drivers would laugh at it, and they’re welcome to, but on practicality and cost, they’re probably the fools.
Those who do a lot of long distance driving, which is obviously more likely in the US, may have a much stronger need for a beemer than most people in Britain, which is why I tried to point out attitudes might well be different across the pond.
Gucci wont make any real money on this until they release the so-called “ripoff” cloned version of the Gucci iPod case for $30 and start selling it on the streets of NYC.
What a racket: make a $1 item, put a $195 tag on it, then sell it on the streets for $30. You’ll sell the occasional case to the idle rich (bonus) in high fashion stores, BUT you’ll sell volume (prime income return) on the streets to all the gullible slaves to fashion thinking “what a bargain I am getting! I’m only paying $30 for a $195 iPod case.”
Yeah I’m married to one, who has 4 sisters, and 2 sisters-in-law (one of them mine), and all of them fit in the later category – multiple times, I might add. How many Gucci bags does a women need? I just don’t get it, and never will. I have one wallet, probably the 3rd or 4th wallet I’ve ever owned, in my nearly half century on this earth, and I almost never carry it.
Zac
Ooh. That’s a nice consipracy theory. I like it.
So, you ask how many gucci bags does a women need maczc?
The answer is as many iPods, PowerBooks, boats, sports cars, and/or home theater systems us guys need 8^>
You know, you can actually get that case for free. I just picked up a cool new Gucci briefcase (just $1640) and they threw in the iPod case for free!
Tedasarus, atleast those thing’s are actually usefull for something! What the hell is a gucci bag usefull for? Personally there the stupidest things I’ve ever seen, and then they sell them for ridiculious prices.
I agree with you, Jack. I just haul around all my crap in brown paper grocery bags. What the hell would I need something stylish, well-made, and functional?
