Gucci debuts US$195 designer iPod carrying case

“International fashion house Gucci Group has pounced on the market opportunity inherent for third parties in the success of Apple Computer’s IPod music player–introducing its own designer IPod carrying case,” Jonny Evans reports for Macworld UK. “Available online through Gucci’s U.S. store, the IPod case is available in multiple colors and costs almost as much as an IPod–$195.”

“The case is available in this season’s Gucci colors–beige/ebony GG plus with dark brown leather trim, green/red/green web carrying handle, and silver hardware,” Evans reports. “Gucci’s product reflects the healthy market surrounding Apple’s product. And Gucci’s case may appeal to select high-profile IPod users, such as Victoria Beckham.” Full article here.

  1. I’ll leave the Gucci, but I kinda wish I would have bought that Burton jacket that had the iPod controls built into the sleeve. My skiing ensemble would have been complete with that baby.

  2. The case is attractive with a distinct Gucci look. I agree with Fred. Clearly the case isn’t for everyone. There’s plenty of ballistic nylon out there for the average “smart PC user” as someone put it.

For those who can afford it and do care about fashion and design, I say, “Accessorize Accessorize Accessorize!”

  3. I quit wearing watches, can’t find one that can take the abuse I give it. Forget about spending $5k on one. That’d be money down the toilet. Quit using pda’s for the same reason. The iPod stays home or in the van, never to work, heck, the screen’s all scratched up after a month and a half as it is, and I’ve been easy on it.

The people who are buying the Gucci case are probably buying the iPod for the EXACT same reason, it’s a fashion statement. If ease of use meant anything to these people, their wealthy husbands/fathers would run their offices on the Mac and tell the IT dept where to stick their windoze machines.

  4. For the same reason as treadlightly, I gave up on watches long ago. I have developed a great sense of time and a really ingratiating way of asking for it when I need it. The guys with 5k watches always get screwed up faces when I ask them, however. I get the feeling they think it is worth about $5 each time. no offense Abomb.

  5. I’m all for people buying this bag and I think it’s a fair price as well (people have their own value equation). If I could afford a $5k watch I might buy it, but $5k would have to be like $50 is for me now. Hmmm, 100 times increase in salary, unfortunately, that ain’t gonna happen.

  6. Everyone has different financial priorities. I personally don’t wear a watch – I can look at my cell phone for the time. When I did wear a watch is was a $50 Fossil. However, I spent $1,000 of a european toilet (Duravit) for my house. I’m glad we have people willing to spend $200 on a Gucci iPod case – keeps people employeed.

Besides, if a Legally Blond 3 comes out I’m sure we’ll see Reese Witherspoon with an iPod in a Gucci case (she had a tangerine iBook in the first movie).

  7. This is actually a huge compliment to the iPod and its design, and can only be seen as a positive for ipods image as the best player money can buy.
It wouldn’t surprise me if Cartier was next with some diamond studded case.

  8. exnihilo–“Fred, some nice elitism”

Not elitism, not an Apple campaign, just a statement of fact. No need to take it personally, right?

I’m not accusing Apple of it, I’m accusing Fred of it. But what was really amusing/annoying was that after four sentences, three of which are wrong, Fred follows up with a quote that says Mac users are smarter. Of course, I’m assuming that Fred is a Mac user, since who else (outside of marketers) would bring up that link.

  9. One guy, to a biker silver Mercedes are the enemy. Big cars you can’t pass easily, driven mostly by people not paying attention (I suspect that is because the cars are just too comfortable). However, I have to say that the electric folding in mirror is a nice touch ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

I take it you have one.

  10. I think the bag will sell heaps in Japan, and may even push iPod sales there! If Vuitton ever makes one and it catches on, supplies of the Mini will remain tight elsewhere.

  11. egads.. did sb just fuckin ask why someone would buy this thing….

    WAKE UP! It’s Gucci!

Nothing they make is practical, it’s snob appeal for rich bored trophy wives.

It’s nice to see that they chose the iPod over the Dell DJ.. respect, even from a materialstic market like the fashion fags, is still respect
