Thurrott: Apple’s ‘iPod Mini isn’t a sales phenomenon at all’

“As I wrote previously, only Apple could ship limited quantities of its iPod Mini in an attempt both show that it can meet a shipping schedule and then claim that the demand for the product is so high that it can’t make enough product to satisfy demand. I suppose that’s one version of what’s happening. But the truth, of course, is that Apple didn’t meet its February for shipping the iPod Mini in quantity in the US, and now it won’t meet its self-imposed deadline of shipping the iPod Mini worldwide in April either. That’s because, today, Apple announced that the product won’t ship until July,” Paul Thurrott writes for Internet Nexus.

“You may recall that Apple quickly announced that it had received 100,000 pre-orders for the iPod Mini but subsequently never mentioned how many they made so far, how many they’ve shipped to customers, or how many further iPod Mini orders they’d received. I suspect 100,000 is pretty close to the whole run, and on that note, I stand by my assertion that the iPod Mini isn’t a sales phenomenon at all,” Thurrott writes.

MacDailyNews Take: CNET reports that Greg Joswiak, vice president of hardware product marketing at Apple stated today, “We expected it to be a hit, but (demand) is turning out to be stronger than expected,” Joswiak said. “U.S. demand is going to consume all the supply we had planned through June.” If Thurrott thinks Apple had planned to sell only 100,000 iPod minis through June, he’s even more delusional than we had previously thought. We think Paul’s in for quite a shock when iPod mini (and iPod) sales numbers are released.

  1. And another thing!

If Apple report that they ‘only’ sold 100,000 by 03/31, they still sold an iPod mini every 34 seconds since 02/20/04 – the first day of official sales.

Have Dell sold a DJ every 34 seconds? Actually have they sold a DJ every 34 minutes?

  2. Does Paul have an axe to grind. Here’s some personal correspondence he sent me:

“What I’ve said is that Apple is a morally bankrupt company, rotten from the top, that lies to its customers, and has been sued for this by its shareholders and customers. I’ve said, correctly, that the company’s market share has fallen, year-after-year, under Steve Jobs, and it has. I’ve said that Apple copies as much as it innovates, which it does.

In short, I just report the truth about Apple, and this Money article corroborates everything I’ve ever thought about the company. It’s lie built on lies.

    Paul”

  3. US customers have been so keen to get their hands on the 102g, 9 x 5 x 1.3cm player that Apple has already reached its end-of-June sales target. It hopes to ramp up its manufacturing in the July quarter, the company said, enabling it to begin selling the product overseas.
    Let’s repeat that one…
Apple has already reached its end-of-June sales target. Now let’s see.. it is 25th of March…April…June… Someone is selling some iPod’s

  4. :: “What I’ve said is that Apple is a morally bankrupt company, rotten from the top, that lies to its customers, …In short, I just report the truth about Apple, and this Money article corroborates everything I’ve ever thought about the company. It’s lie built on lies.::

Why does this sort of rant so sound eerily familiar?

It sounds like the sort of hate Clinton used to get from people who hated him and his adminstration.

I am not trying to drag politics into the thread, but Paul’s hatred of Apple seems to be on that sort of level, with that sort of language.

It is like irrational hate. There may have been something the “object of hate” really did to piss off the “hater”, but at this point, there is only a cycle of hate. The “hater” simply hates the “object of hate” and all who support it because they keep saying he is wrong, but he can not be wrong because the original reason for his hate has been forgoten, it’s like the haters ego or id has replaced the reason he hated, so he can not be wrong, if he was, then he would invalidate himself!

This is a like Dark Side hate. This is totally irrational hate. This is insane hate. This is I must be right or all I stand for is wrong and if all stand for is wrong then I do not know anything and that scares me hate. This is darn near going postal hate.

Anyway, I am not a head shrink, but I think Paul could use one, it would help lower his chances of heart failure.

  5. People who don’t like the taste of Crow, should avoid making fools of themselves by predicting a product’s failure based on their hatred of the company producing it.

Those previous Mini doomsayers with any credibility have already admitted they were wrong about the Mini’s sales potential. Those with zero credibility continue to spin the numbers and babble on with their pathetic attempts at marginalizing the Mini’s incredible success story.

  6. As an aside, I note that Thurrot has dropped the tagline “An honest look at Windows alternatives” from his Internet Nexus site. It now simply “a blog by technology writer Paul Thurrot”. At least he’s being honest about about his lack of honesty.

And I also note that his list of personal hardware on the site includes Mac gear and Linux machines but makes no mention of Windows kit. Does this mean he doesn’t know what he’s talking about when he writes stuff on his Windows Super Site (sic)?

  7. “What I’ve said is that Apple is a morally bankrupt company, rotten from the top, that lies to its customers, …In short, I just report the truth about Apple, and this Money article corroborates everything I’ve ever thought about the company. It’s lie built on lies.::”

Well Mr. thurrot, here I sit with a mac, earning my living by producing art and content on this mac.I havent been lied to by apple anymore than I have been lied to by the media, MS, coca cola, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Mr. Thurrot the FACT that I make my money using a mac makes your assertions morally bankrupt and rotten.

  8. This may make alot of people upset, but Apple should have charged $299 or $350 for the miniPod at the beginning, if hard drive volume is the only problem. If the cost was $199, then we wouldn’t see miniPods worldwide until Christmas because of the demand.
What Paul Thurraw-throat wrote is absurd and ridiculous and again he looks like a fool and he should get fired for continuously abusing his columnist oath to be neutral. His bias is tattooed all over his forehead, and he has nothing else to write about. Surely people at his business are getting tired of this. This guy has a biased agenda, and as he continues to look foolish, so does the company he works for. I also have a bias in favor of Apple, but I am not a columnist or journalist and not abusing my job position.

  9. Yet more delusional stream-of-consciousness rambling from Thurridiot. I’m deafened once again by the stereo cacophony of the sound of a wooden nose growing and his credibility going Timberrr!

  10. This shill for everything M$ never posts articles about his favorite companies illegal monopolistic practices, it’s failure to provide a decent OS that is not full of security holes, his failure to disclose that he uses an iMac at home, his simplistic meaness towards people and his incredible hubris at calling himself a “journalist”. As I’ve said before, MDN needs to stop posting links to his stories which only give his bosses reason to keep him on because of all the hits. MDN has to learn to show some taste and class and ignore this bully.

  11. And I also note that his list of personal hardware on the site includes Mac gear and Linux machines but makes no mention of Windows kit. Does this mean he doesn’t know what he’s talking about when he writes stuff on his Windows Super Site (sic)?

I think that’s because he’s constantly tearing it apart to fix it or upgrade it so posting stats on his Windows kit would be unproductive, as they’d only be accurate for a very short period of time.

Thurrotts credibilty is on par with president Bush’s!

Actually, I’d say it’s on par with that of Richard Clarke’s.

  12. “Actually, I’d say it’s on par with that of Richard Clarke’s.”

    LOL!
You must have internet access like most if us, so do a little research before you show your ignorance, please.

  13. “Richard Clarke”? Is he talking about Wesley Clarke? Anyway, let’s leave the politics for another forum. This is Mac stuff. And Thurrott bashing. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  14. JC: You must have internet access like most if us, so do a little research before you show your ignorance, please.

I’ve been following this story for quite a few weeks, and I have read as much as I can on the Hearings and Clarke’s book, not to mention reading interviews of Clarke dating back to early 2002. So before you start blasting me for my ‘ignorance’, ask me how much I’ve read up on the subject.

  15. Johhny,
I agree that this is irrational hate on the scale of those that hate Clinton. It reminded me of the irrational hate of those that hate Bush- like Moveon.org. Pure hate. It bothers me, too. I think more temperment is needed. Everyone screws-up and everyone has successes.
