“Select members of the industry and media received invitations Tuesday from Apple to a special event taking place one week from today at the California Theater in San Jose. The event, Think Secret has learned, will not usher in the much rumored video iPod but rather new PowerBook and Power Mac systems,” Ryan Katz reports for Think Secret.

Intel-based iBook/Newton/iPod will be called either ‘iTab’ or ‘iPad’.
It seems about the right time for the first dual-core G5 PowerMacs to come out. I would like to see PCIe, too. Not sure about the PB – could be a ~2GHz G4?

Absolutely no way, ThinkSecret is dead wrong this time. The Intel Macs aren’t going to be ready by next week and Apple certainly wouldn’t call a media event to introduce PowerPC based Macs of any kind. This is an iPod/video/digital media event, pure and simple.
The original Mac was unveiled at the same theater back in the day. Say hello to antares- the dual-core G5 PowerMac. Say hello to dual FreeScale 32-bit PowerBooks.

I am suspicious, because Think Secret has had so little information the past few months (since it got sued by Apple, big time), and they’ve had many reports be wrong–I think because Apple has been toying with them and intentionally trying to make them look bad.
Before the lawsuit, they were basically always right about everything–but now I doubt that, having been clueless about the original rumor, they would be the only site to learn the truth about what this special event will actually cover.
I think they’re being used. Also, I hope they’re wrong because I want to see what’s coming in terms of the video future from Apple–and an Airport Express with video out sounds great to me. Hook it up to a projector, and you’d be all set!

MCCFR, I think it’s “One More Thing”, not “One Last Thing”, but I hope you’re right about the Tivo-like device. Maybe Apple bought Tivo and made it better. Didn’t the CEO of Tivo say that he wished that they would a few months ago.
I highly doubt that it’s Intel Macs yet. My money is on a video iPod.
No way is Oct 12 ‘devoted’ to PowerBooks and PowerMacs. Why?
Why? In the past, upgrades of PBs and PMs have been no big deal. Apple just did the upgrade, made a standard announcement, and went on with life.
Everyone knows the current line of PowerBooks and PowerMacs are near end of line as the Intel-based machines are being developed. Why make a big fuss over something that’s going to die eventually anyway?
Apple could very well ‘announce’ new PowerBooks and PowerMacs on Oct 12. But, the ‘One more thing…’ will be an iPod that shows videos and music videos available for sale on iTunes Music Store.

Although new Powerbooks & Powermacs are nice, I don’t think that
Apple is going to go to all the trouble without introducing at least one new product, even if its not as big as a new iPod. It could be something like new software or a new type of airport base.
I don’t have a clue as to what the annoucement is but I am for darn sure it ain’t just speed bumps for the PowerMac/Book lines. Seriously why would Apple call a special event for this? They only call for a special event on things that are truly a suprise (the nano, color iPod and U2 iPod, the ITMS to name a few). WHy would they make themselves look like small potatoes to update the pro line? They will update the Pro lines either queitly at the event or just on the Apple.com But there will be something exciting at hte event.

I’m with those who doubt that Apple would call a big event just to upgrade their towers and laptops, unless it’s one heck of an earth-shattering upgrade.
Apple has utterly castrated ThinkSecret. The lawsuit may not yet be settled, but they’ve already lost.

I have been speculating that Apple will introduce MacTels at MWSF, with shipping dates in February to thwart delayed buying decisions for some time. October would be much to early.
MW = time. As in, “Is the time right”? No.
Oh yeah, dual-layer DVD burners and faster graphics in the new PowerBooks too. Possibly H.264 accelerated video, but that might have to wait until Intel PowerBooks – depending on ATI. I’m guessing no two-button trackpad until Intel PowerBooks.
One last PowerBook thing – 200Mhz front-side bus, up from 166Mhz.
um, wouldn’t intel based Macs need to have software ready for it to function correctly? Like, say for example, Photoshop????

Apple hasn’t been holding special events for basic PPC upgrades. The last two upgrades to the Powerbook and the PowerMac just slipped out, and look at the latest upgrade to the Mac mini. Not even announced.
This event won’t be ppc updates surely…

Just a wild guess by the Dude here…. but the Dude thinks that it will be a home theater type device. A home entertainment center connecting your digital lifestyle to your TV for easy viewing.

Think Secret nailed it. PowerMacs and Powerbooks have been in a nasty slide.
Expect nice upgrades to the PowerMac–e.g. ability to have 4 drives, smaller cases, etc.,–and HD support for the PowerBooks.
Personally, I hope we see a sweet new 17″ Powerbook with the ATI x800 and a 2ghz CPU, and faster and better everything. I’ll upgrade from my Rev. B PB17 in a second if that is the case.
Plus, you know iLife 06 is going to have some creative HD support. Keynote will have better HD support. Apple is laying the groundwork now with hardware for the software in January.
I think that there will be a new iPod with a vibrator.
IF TS is correct, I cannot see any reason for showing a Powerbook unless
its with an Intel chip or the Motorola dual core 8641 chip (which is not scheduled to go into production until next year).

With Hardmac talking about supply channels in Europe being very thin it is possible that there will be more than one product announced.

I kind of think a G5 for PowerBooks might happen. Not delivering one was definitely an embarrassment for Stevo. Might be a personal redemption kind of thing just to say he delivered what he promised. I doubt Intel-based units are ready just yet. This will probably be a combo video iPod, Mac power boosts kind of thing. Will be interesting. Stevo seldoms disappoints.
Of course, I’ll have to use my soft rubber skin for it then, so I won’t chip my teeth.

And yes I think I’ll agree with you, but it will be very expensive, I think they will be 970MP G5’s not Intels, only in PowerMac’s. There is hardly any MacTel software ready yet.

Do you think Adobe, Microsoft, and the rest will announce new software before Apple will announce Intel Macs? I’m not speculating Intel Macs, but software will FOLLOW hardware — not the other way around.
When Apple announces Intel Macs, iLife, Adobe’s suite, MS Office for Mac will be ready. But that’s about it. All other Mac software will have to follow. Apple’s not going to wait until EVERY software developer is on board.
Some one pointed out that the announcement itself had rounded upper corners and 90° bottom corners, just like the Mac desktop. I seriously doubt this is anything other than intentional and needs to be factored into the equation. How about if Steve does more than just a single thing, but a synergy of interrelated products:
• HD movie iTunes store
• set top box/Airport Express with video out (pre-n, of course) to connect the Mac to the TV
• Video iPod with an iHome feature to carry content around and preview, or SPECULATION ONLY: an iTablet with a 16:9 size screen around 5-6inches diagonal that can serve as a portable movie veiwer, internet access point, intelligent remote for the set top/Airport Express/Mac/other devices and can also act as a dumb terminal for your desktop Mac, with a limited set of built-in applications such as iLife and iWork 9and of course iTunes/iCal/Mail/Address Book. Price: $699-$899 depending on size of hard drive.

2005 – the year of HD. I like the vPod rumours. I am highly suspicious of the G5 and PB rumors. That’s just blind speculation and wishful thinking.
There will be a lifestyle electro-gizmo announcement. The curtains symbolize that it will be something new, an unveiling. Something secret. It would be unusual for Apple to annouce PB upgrades at an event like this. It must be something new.
It’s going to be the eBook. A $100.00 laptop for poor third world school kids.

I don’t know about that. Hell, it could be anything. But the way it’s being done – debuting the Nano, creating all that buzz. And then throwing this “One More Thing” out there creating even more buzz. If it WAS just a new system or PB, it’d be such a let down.
No, even if it’s not a video iPod, I’d like to think it’s something nobody saw coming… something really new and exciting…. it’s not that Macs arent’ exciting – they are. But the way this was orchestrated, it doesn’t feel like that…
