‘iPad Air Plus’ schematic reveals 12.2-inch display and Apple ‘A9’ processor

“Japanese magazine Mac Fan has published what it claims are drawings for the much rumored upcoming 12-inch iPad,” Jordan Kahn reports for 9to5Mac.

“The report in Mac Fan, which refers to the 12-inch iPad as the iPad Air Plus, claims that the new iPad will include a 12.2-inch display, new A9 processor, four speakers to offer stereo sound in any orientation, and arrive sometime between April and June of next year,” Kahn reports. “Latest rumors for the device claimed iPad Pro would sport a smaller 12.2-inch display and a profile of 7mm, which lines up with the drawings published in the latest Mac Fan issue today.”

Bloomberg and others reported that Apple was planning on releasing the device sometime in early 2015, while a recent report from The Wall Street Journal claimed Apple had postponed mass production of the larger iPad from December 2014 into next year as suppliers struggled to meet demand for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launch,” Kahn reports. “The latest rumors from the supply chain point to delays that will see mass production of the larger iPad start sometime in Q1 or Q2 of next year.”

  1. The 12″ display would be enough to convince me to upgrade from my iPad3. Faster? More memory? Not really pushing my iPad3 at this point. But a bigger screen? (just wish I could get a smaller phone that performs as well as 6/6+ 🙂 )

    1. It’s got to have some form of unique benefit. If it’s just bigger, I’m not sure that will justify the upgrade from an iPad Air 1/2, or hardly worth the wait if in the market to buy.

But on the other hand, if there is some unique benefit, I’m excited to learn what that might be.

  2. more baseless rumors.

If Apple wanted to build an actual iPad Pro, then it should make the display large enough to display at ~100% scale an A4 or standard office 8.5″x11″ page. That would be a roughly 14″ diagonal size.

However, it’s clear that Apple has no interest in making an iPad Pro. The iOS ecosystem is being designed around media consumption, not content creation and sharing. So instead of having a large palette for creative work, the iPad offers just enough screen room for reading magazines, email, basic internet, and games. iCloud doesn’t offer the user the ability to store or transfer very many RAW images, and of course the addition of a proper SD card reader or external display connectivity is something Apple would rather do by gouging customers with strings of overpriced white adapters. $50 to convert Lightning to HDMI — that’s highway robbery.

Besides, a ~ 14″ display would require a relatively sturdy body and significantly more battery than Apple offers today. What makes us think Ive could even conceive of a product thick enough to do the job?

The Mac platform, though Apple refuses to advertise it, remains the only real tool for creators. For those who just want a larger iPad display, then keep panning swiping pinching and zooming away. Because you know how efficient all that finger manipulation is — that’s just what every productive person loves to do, right, smudge up his work display?

      1. If you can list 10 pieces of media that I can buy that were produced exclusively on iOS, then do so. If not, STFU.

For every student who does a film project or professional photographer who happens to publish some great photos from his iPhone because that’s what he had available to him at the time, there are a million iOS gadgets serving up nothing but Hollywood’s latest fantasies and Google ads. Sorry, but no amount of your snideness will change that fact.

  3. Mike, you don’t have to be such a jerk! Besides, I don’t see that you have taken into account the new I’M/Apple deal which may be a catalyst for a larger iPad. Not saying it’s a sure thing but a possibility.

    1. Scooby, while I normally attempt to be as socially adept as possible, my response to althegeo was commeasurate with the usual personal attacks that althegeo levys on other users. Forgive me for descending to his level of social ineptitude.

My point is, there is no way any iOS device can legitimately be called a “pro” anything. iOS has been designed from day one to be a mobile consumer platform primarily for consumption. The Mac is the platform for creation and productivity, and Cook has reiterated that is the plan for the foreseeable future. Frankly, i find it disgusting that Cook & Co have dumbed down the Mac OS and the Mac hardware as much as they have in the last 3 years, allowing thin design to trump capability and user-friendliness.

Oh, and I’m still waiting for althegeo to find anything substantial produced on iOS.

And there’s nothing IBM is going to bring to the table that will remove the inherent hardware and ecosystem limitations of iOS. If one wants to be a digital content creator, it starts by getting a Mac.

      1. You’re assuming it’s going to run iOS.

Ever since the iPad Air 1 was released, I have said that an iPad Pro will be released, and I have speculated that it will run OS X (there is absolutely no other justification in just changing the brand name oft he iPad to iPad Air). Essentially a surface-style device, but with the Apple slant. It’s that empty product slot that Apple has yet to fill in their computer line.
