Apple: Lessons in self-disruption

“Concerns are raising: Without Steve Jobs, has Apple indeed lost its Mojo?” Richard Gutjahr asks for G!.

“‘Quite the opposite’ says Horace Dediu, one of the most fascinating Apple experts, I met. Horace started as a developer, has been an analyst for Nokia and knows the mobile industry like no other,” Gutjahr writes. “With his company asymco.com he is one of the brightest stars in the analysts’ scene, especially when it comes to Apple. Anyone who had the chance to see him at one of his iPad-navigated presentations on stage understands why.”

“Horace made a statement, which I found quite intriguing: In order to remain innovative, it is not enough to reinvent yourself again and again. Apple must be the one to destroy its own business,” Gutjahr writes. “A few days ago, Horace and I sat down for a Skype-Cast (New York and Munich). In this conversation we touched issues like the Post-Jobs Era, Apple’s philosophy, the long-term strategy of the company and, of course, the Next Big Thing.”

Oh, gawd, Richard! This is business 101. (At least in the circles I move in.)

  2. “not enough to reinvent yourself again and again. Apple must be the one to destroy its own business”

What an idiot! A business must not allow past or current success to cloud their view of the future. No business should destroy their success instead they need to figure the path forward.

iPod to iPhone to iPad to the future… iPhone was not setup to destroy iPod, it allowed it to become less relevant and got moved into iTouch and I am sure iPhone at some point become irrelevant with another innovative method of communication. I recall a video clip talking about EyePhone 🙂

Apple showed the level of innovation is going through the roof at WWDC and the proof of the pudding will come in Sept/Oct.

“Authors must not destroy their reputation by writing crap”

  3. Apple willing to kill off it’s own products? Never! Well except for ……

    iPod being killed by iPhone
    desktops being replaced by laptops
    laptops being replaced by iPads
iTunes sales being threatened by iTunes Radio/Beats deal.

As for Google killing it with new innovations???? What have they brought to the industry……like…..ever? Outside of search? Google glass is still just a prototype with no timeline for success. GoogleTV=Flop, Nexus Q = never made it to market, ChromeCast = success but shot in head 6 months later by their fourth attempt at an AppleTV called AndroidTV…..we will see.
Yes, they purchased robot, drone and AI companies and they continue to play with self driving cars but NONE OF THESE ARE PRODUCTS!!!! Google talks up what they are doing and kill off products faster than new products are introduced but I don’t think that is INNOVATION. Sounds more like having enough money to keep trying stupid things until, hopefully, one pays off.
