Adam Frucci reports for DVICE, “This is the first in-dash installation of the iPad we’ve seen, but it’s certainly not going to be the last. Are we looking at a major use for Apple’s new tablet?”

“The iPad available right now isn’t the one you’ll want to use,” Frucci reports. “It lacks both 3G and GPS, robbing it of a very large portion of the usefulness that having a dash-mounted iPad would offer. But as of next month, this might be one of the hottest uses for the newly-released iPad 3G.”

MacDailyNews Note: SoundMan Car Audio (Santa Clarita, California) explains the installation on their website: On The day of the iPad release, we were able to start our planned iPad project. We chose to use the iPad as the only source for the vehicles entertainment system. The dock connector will plug into a cable that runs to a Onkyo ND-S1 which will send the digital signal from the iPad directly into an Audison Bit One. The Bit One will then act as the D/A converter, and will also process the audio signal. The Bit One also has a great controller for adjusting the volume and audio settings. The amplifier we chose is the McIntosh MCC406M. Stay tunned for the rest of the build. You’ll be able to find all the pictures and videos on this page as they become available.
[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Scotty Too Hottie” for the heads up.]
That is pretty sick. Probably works better with the 3G model since you are unlikely to have WiFi in your car – but whatever.
I like the use of a McIntosh amp
I can’t wait to have this installed in my Honda Element. One thing I will do is make easy to take out, that way when I go somewhere I can take it out to use indoors. This is going to be the ultimate car stereo interface.
“Well, you see, um, officer — this YouTube vide came up and ….”
“But Officer, I was just playing Plants & Zombies, and I really didn’t mean to run the red light”
Wait a second…
I submitted this article too…
Who is this “Scottie Too Hottie”?
Screw this in dash Krap. When they can put it right in the middle of the steering wheel I’m in!
The real genius of this is that the screen will orientate correctly if he rolls the car ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />
Can please you spit out the chewy before taping?…

LOL
And it blends!
Future so bright he has to wear sunglasses.
Great idea, esp. with the 3G model.
The iPad will likely need an anit-glare overlay for in-vehicle use though. Lots of glare and reflection in the video which will only be more apparent, and troublesome on the road.
@VelcroMonkey
Thanks for the laugh this morning. Awesome comment.
Talk about a true in-car entertainment system! Get the 3G iPad and you’ll have access to all kinds of information all the time. Sweet.
He looks pretty happy to me.
Get a life…
Nice touch. Advancements in technology are always reflected in how people use the technology. iPad is such technology that will be used in ways unimaginable. Way to go Apple!!
But what about apps that only work in portrait?
And you can keep a bluetooth keyboard in the glove for time s you want to type out a quick email to someone
“The iPad available right now isn’t the one you’ll want to use”
In the not too distant future, many homes will have a couple of iPads lying around the house with the people living there echoing the phrase, “no, I had it first!”
This is in addition to the G3/4/5 models that will be taken out of the house.
I’d probably want the home button on the driver’s side, but I wouldn’t kick it out of bed for eating crackers.
Takes balls to put a $500 device into a Toyota.
**Toyota: There’s No Stopping Us!**
dude, this is awesome.
Very interesting to see this. I have three modified cars and have been planning an iPad installation for each since it was announced but I’m waiting for the 3G version as it will also do satnav.
Cool to see this done so quickly and I am interested in the rest of his install.
The first iPad install…
