First in-dash iPad vehicle installation (with video)

Adam Frucci reports for DVICE, “This is the first in-dash installation of the iPad we’ve seen, but it’s certainly not going to be the last. Are we looking at a major use for Apple’s new tablet?”

“The iPad available right now isn’t the one you’ll want to use,” Frucci reports. “It lacks both 3G and GPS, robbing it of a very large portion of the usefulness that having a dash-mounted iPad would offer. But as of next month, this might be one of the hottest uses for the newly-released iPad 3G.”

MacDailyNews Note: SoundMan Car Audio (Santa Clarita, California) explains the installation on their website: On The day of the iPad release, we were able to start our planned iPad project. We chose to use the iPad as the only source for the vehicles entertainment system. The dock connector will plug into a cable that runs to a Onkyo ND-S1 which will send the digital signal from the iPad directly into an Audison Bit One. The Bit One will then act as the D/A converter, and will also process the audio signal. The Bit One also has a great controller for adjusting the volume and audio settings. The amplifier we chose is the McIntosh MCC406M. Stay tunned for the rest of the build. You’ll be able to find all the pictures and videos on this page as they become available.

  1. Yeah, that’s great, until some thief comes along and smashes his window to get his iPad.

I think I’ll wait until the $30 double ventmount comes along! Connect that to my Peripheral Electronics dock connector, which connects to my CD changer input, and allows me to pipe my iPhone sound thru my car’s 12 speaker stereo with sub, and uses my built-in controls on my steering wheel. Total cost for my current iPhone setup $120. $20 for the ventmount, and $100 for the Peripheral Electronics adapter kit. No thiefs to worry about.
