Unless they’re campaign-based and more than just simple shooters, gaming on a computer is for losers.
I liked “The Guy Game”. Why was it pulled?
that blows. so all but the best g4 powerbooks aren’t supported. blah. hope the mac mini comes out soon!
Gaming is better on dedicated systems and computers are better for science, math, internet, and video. Bottom line.
Dick, what the fsck are you babbling about?
First person shooters work so much better with a keyboard and mouse than with a game console controller. For that reason alone is this type of game better on a computer than a console.
Besides, I’d rather use my Apple Mac than a Microsoft or Sony product any day.
“Gaming is better on dedicated systems and computers are better for science, math, internet, and video. Bottom line.”
I couldn’t agree with you more.

You can use a USB keyboard/mouse with a game console too ya know…
I bet it sucks on the fastest Powerbooks. I bet it runs fairly well on the dual-G5 2.7GHz. I bet it runs great on the fastest AMD systems. It’ll probably run great on Macs by sometime next year.
Face it. We’re behind when it comes to raw performance on anything other than floating point or memory throughput. Games don’t need awesome FP performance or multiple processors.
A dedicated hardware console designed from bottom up just for games is far superior to ANY pc for playing games.
period.
whatever, some games are better on dedicated consoles, ie: sports, car racing, arcade, multiplayer on one screen and “console” titles. Other games are far better on a computer, such as real time strategy, traditional RPGs, first person shooters, puzzle games, flight sims etc. The computer generally has the following advantages:
– proximity to the screen provides better immersion (how much depends on size and quality of screen of course)
– more state of the art hardware. Consoles are powerful when they first come out, but get eclipsed quickly by computers which are updated far more frequently (6-9 months vs. 5 years)
– mouse. Nothing beats a mouse for games where you have to navigate menus and select objects. It’s also the most accurate analog control there is for first person shooters. Control pads suck for this purpose.
– Keyboard. From chatting with others, to interactive features of a game, to having a large number of options available in-game. Some games just aren’t possible on a console because of the lack of a keyboard. Flight sims come to mind.
– comfort. I can sit at my desk and play first person shooters for hours on end without any noticeable muscular fatigue. Sitting on a couch hunched over a controller becomes very unconfortable after a couple of hours.
– updates. PC games can be updated frequently via the internet. Traditionally, consoles never were, but that may change with the new consoles being more internet integrated.
– mods. A game you have played to death can suddenly give you hundreds of additional hours of gametime with all the game modding that is going on.
– Free internet play. Most computer games can be played on the internet for free. Systems like XBox and XBox 360 require monthly or annual subscriptions to play online in a closed network.
That isn’t to say consoles don’t have their own list of advantages. It’s up to the individual to decide which are more important for them. Anyone else think of anything I left out? Also, be happy to see someone’s console advantage list. I could come up with some of my own, but seeing as I prefer to play on computers, I’m not going to help defend the opposing opinion.

Quake 4 is super demanding on hardware. I’ve got a 2.6Ghz Athlon64 with a 7800GT video card, and it doesn’t play as smoothly as I would like at 1680*1050 resolution (native on my 20″ widescreen display) with 2X AA enabled. On the other hand, Half-Life2 plays perfectly smooth with all of the graphics settings maxed out, with 4X AA at 1680*1050. Half-Life2 is a far more interesting and good looking game, too. Quake4 uses the Doom3 engine, which sucks in a really big way on PPC Macs, but runs fine on Intel Macs. Quake4 does have some nice dual-CPU optimizations in the latest patches of the game, which should be a big plus on the dual-core Intel Macs.
mouse aiming = far better than any console game.
but that’s just for what I MYSELF like. what’s with people who think the only games that are good are the kind of game THEY like?
1st-person shooters are a HUGE market. And the best fun you can have by yourself!
aiming a first-person gun with a console is frustration, not fun. qet a mouse and point and click. Fight your enemies, not your controls.
q iv looks like great fun and I’m all over it!
“I liked “The Guy Game”. Why was it pulled?”
It was pulled because one of the models who posed topless was underage.

Unless of course you are talking about the Nintendo Revolution controller. It is going to take FPSs to a whole new level of immersion. It will be much more intuitive than using a mouse+keyboard setup.

I’m with Andy C., I’d much rather play games, especially FPS, on my Mac than a console. Now we just need more of them! I wish Apple would by Aspyr and kick it into high gear.
Is it going to run on my Mactel iMac via Rosetta???
Andy C. — We half agree. I think campaign/strategy games are better on a computer. First person shooters/idiot games — no way.
I’ll take a campaign-style/historical/situational game and play it on a computer, since it truly engages the mind. But shooters and the other racing crap, pffft — those are what dedicated gaming consoles are for.

Ohhhh, myyyy . . . so she was (gasp) 17! when she posed (gasp) . . . TOPLESS!!!! Ohhhhh, wellllllll, that explains EVERYTHING.
God forbid that, in “enlightened America”, you are permitted to see the (gasp) areolae of a (gasp) 17-year old!!!! Ohhhh noooooo. Even though she’s (gasp, shock, horror) . . . SEXUALLY MATURE at that age, she’s still just a (indignancy, outrage, gasp) CHILD!!!!!
And even though (what!?!, shock, furious) “underage” “children” go to clothing-optional beaches with their PARENTS or friends — yes, even in (gasp, incredulousness) AMERICA — where their precious areolae can be seen (the horror, the horror), we mustn’t allow that to stop us from killing the distribution of a game intended for . . . (shock, awe, anger) ADULTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a joke. You Americans drive me nuts. Can you at least begin to see how people in other parts of the western world laugh at you occasionally? Huh? Just a little bit?
(And no, I know that ALL Americans aren’t hypocrites. And I know that now some Americans will chime in and try and eradicate me. But sheesh, sometimes it seems as though you all are way too f*cking uptight. You know, the whole “it’s all done FOR THE CHILDREN” thing. Blechhhhh.)
“American Boobie Fears”, I’m an American, and I must admit, I’ve always thought it ridiculous that in this country, the only part of a woman’s breast which is taboo is the nipple, yet it’s the same part that is identical to a man’s, which is not taboo. I don’t get it either.
Hey horse’s ass… I mean whatever:
Uh… game systems ARE computers.
..the only part? i thought there were others. thats not bad
“carlo”- the only part of a woman’s BREAST!
And in a truly enlightened society, NO body parts would be “taboo”. The whole concept is asinine to many people.
ndelc “…the only part of a woman’s breast which is taboo is the nipple, yet it’s the same part that is identical to a man’s,…”
Well there´s your problem ndelc – you don´t know the difference. Tip: They look a lot different in real life and not in the magazine. Maybe someday you will get to see a woman´s nipple in real life.
“fighting alone, along side other Marines”
Makes sense
