President Bush’s weekly radio address podcasts available via Apple’s iTunes Music Store

“President Bush’s radio addresses [are now] offered via podcast… Here’s what White House spokesman David Almacy told me: Selected Bush speeches, along with the radio addresses, are available now at the iTunes Web site. A team of about a dozen Web staffers are converting these and selected speeches into MP3 files and making them available too,” Robert MacMillan reports for The Washington Post.

“Not only that, the White House has created RSS feeds for the radio addresses in English and Spanish. That means that anyone who wants to can sign up to receive the information through their RSS readers along with news and other Web site updates that offer this service,” MacMillan reports. “‘As technology advances, the White House recognizes the importance of providing content in new ways to reach new audiences to communicate the president’s vision,’ Almacy said. Regardless of the current brouhaha over what that vision is, it might be possible to classify the Bush White House as jumping ahead of the curve on technology.”

  1. Being created perfect and living perfect are not the same. Adam made a choice and set all of this imperfection in motion.

As for miraculous signs, most didn’t believe even after the saw them and neither would you. Your heart is too hard.

  2. Intelligent Design. Now there’s buncombe if I’ve ever heard it. I sent Washington Journal a commentary, but it was not aired. To wit, if the complexity of life implies the need for an Intelligent Designer — whether God, space aliens or Ralph Lauren — then the Intelligent Designer is necessarily complex. Who designed the designer? Obviously, this is an infinite regress that never comes to an end. Simply put, the advocates of Intelligent Design want to put God in the gaps in evolutionary theory and have us believe it is a scientific answer. It is not; in fact, it is no answer to anything.

  3. Science —

    Dear Prophet,

(You can believe that if you want to, but you can’t prove it, and it doesn’t change the truth. Natural random processes will never advance continually in greater and greater complexity or result in systems designed for specific purposes.

You can’t put a bunch of elements into a burning couldron, wait a few million or billion years, and end up with a Porshe. In exactly the same way, you can’t put a bunch of chemicals into a pot, wait a few million or billion years, and end up with a human being.

    Not possible. Completely illogical.)

YES I CAN and guess what? It is called ‘MAN’ very logical, you might even be one!! Scarry isn’t it?

4 Billion years of evolution against a few what ever you like!!!!!

  4. Here’s an article that may make my point a bit more clearly that I can.

    http://www.venganza.org/

” I think we can all look forward to the time when these three theories are given equal time in our science classrooms across the country, and eventually the world; One third time for Intelligent Design, one third time for Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, and one third time for logical conjecture based on overwhelming observable evidence.”

  5. Here’s an impartial bystander’s opinion.

Religion is absolutely the most evil thing that has ever existed in the world.

Say what you want about “your” religion, how its all about peace and non-violence, but the reality is that the very concept of religion is devisive – you are either “save” or not, you are “good” or “evil”.

The reality is that, throughout history, more wars have been fought and more people have been killed due to religion than anything else. And if you dont believe that the current situation in Iraq is related to religion, then you need to pay closer attention.

  6. Hey guys,

This is all very exciting stuff, but I am on the front line here in Afghanistan and I can tell you that no ideology that anyone has expunged so far, has made a difference to the daily lives of the people that are coming back to life in Afghanistan.

They are Still Muslims and proud of it, ( no problem there) They just want to be able to bring up their families without believing they will be part of a future war. Either by their own government or by the American’s.

When someone offers you peace, you will take it and trust that it gives you room to prosper. They are prepared to do this!

let’s hope that the hard work done here will lead to that. The signs are good. The locals are not arguing about ‘Intelligent Design”or any other design, they just want peace and safety for their children. They haven;t haqd the time to sit and think about it!

Not much to ask from a very rich ‘WEST’?

    Is it?

  7. It is a shame to see fellow Mac enthusiasts exhibit such narrowminded expressions as seen in most of the posts above. I think that the office of the President embracing podcasting for communications to the citizenry a positive step. Regardless of how much some of you may hate the current President, he will be replaced in just a few years, but the precedent of podcasting the views from that office, undiluted by the media, has been set.

Regarding ID, I suggest some of you rabid naysayers read the multiple books of Gerald L. Schroeder. Schroeder is a physicist, with both his undergraduate and doctoral degrees from M.I.T. His writings on astrophysics to quantum mechanics to microbiology are very enlightening. I defy any of those that want to dismiss ID to read Dr. Schoeders books and not come away with a better understanding of what the theory of Evolution proves and does not prove. Evolution fits quite nicely within the framework of ID; they are NOT mutually exclusive. If you REALLY want to understand the nature of life on earth, I suggest you keep a truly open mind and not simply adhere to one belief system or another. For the record: I wasn’t raised in a church going family, I am not affiliated with any religion, I am a college graduate that majored in biology. Lastly, the biochemistry of DNA and RNA is some of the most complex and sophisticated chemistry on the planet, yet it appeared with the very first life on earth. Statisticians have ruled out the plausibility or the possibility of these extremely complex molecules, and there attending interaction, merely happening by “chance”. Regardless of how many billions years ago our planet was formed, water didn’t appear to relatively recently, and none of the complex chemistry of life is even possible without it. The period of time from when water condensed on earth to the appearance of life is a blink of the eye in geological time. “Chance” simply does not allow for it. READ and become enlightened. There are many such FACTS that are simply not explained by Evolution alone.

  8. Prophet,

The bible was written 40 years after those “stories” happened (leaving room for much elaboration and misinformation), by people who didn’t understand the complexity of our world. Their words should not be taken at face value. e.g Noah’s Flood was not a flood of the whole world because they did not have a concept of how big the world was. Noah’s flood was just a flood in their area, proven by scientific fact (there is a show on Discovery that examines events such as this to see if there are explanations for what is said to have happened and most if not all are completely explainable). People come up with strange theories for things when they do not understand and there is a whole lot they did not understand at that time so to look at the bible for all your answers in life is just plain ignorant.

  9. What I believe, is that humans did not evolve from some intert primordial soup. How could they? Thats just absurd.

Let me tell you what happened. Millions of years ago, a vactioning family of alphacenturians landed here to take a dump. In this fetid pile of waste they excreted onto the surface of the planet, were the initial bacteria from which all further native life on this planet evolved.

Someone on here mentioned a building, the existence of a which is proof of the existence of a builder. As such, the existence of human waste is proof of it’s origin. There is no better example of human waste than the current president of the USA to illustrate that example.

  10. I’m with Spark. Don’t confuse intelligent design with creationism. Many scientists have embraced ID because evolution simply doesn’t have all the answers.

As for Iraq, it’s the insurgents who are slaughtering civilians, not coalition forces.

  11. Prophet:

So, God is talking directly to us through the Bible? Or is it just his ghost-writing team? Of course, if one truly reads the original Talmud, there are literally hundreds of commandments which, I assume, you observe. Let’s start with an easy one first? I presume you haven’t eaten any shellfish recently or eaten a hamburger with a milkshake.

Aramaic translated into Greek then translated into Latin and finally into German, English and a hundred other languages. I’m sure there was no room for misinterpretation, especially as the Roman Empire was seeking to maintain control of Europe as Christianity spread.

You can believe that if you want to, but you can’t prove it, and it doesn’t change the truth. Natural random processes will never advance continually in greater and greater complexity or result in systems designed for specific purposes.

Utter rubbish – the random processes are not advancing continually, they were complex to begin with, they’re complex now, they’ll still be complex in 20 billion years. But guess what? They’ll be the same processes.

As for “systems designed for specific purposes”: more nonsense. Only a religious zealot in his arrogance could believe that they’re part of a system designed for a purpose (“Why are we all here?”). The random nature of the Universe made the Earth habitable, and the random processes of evolution resulted in humans, and the random processes of procreation resulted in you.

The only “system” you and I are part of is the Homo Sapiens system, which chaotically interacts – normally detrimentally, despite our alleged intelligence – with other systems comprising other species as well as self-contained systems defining climate, ocean currents, coastal erosion etc.

As for complexity, the only powering force is humankind continually “progressing” by trying to alter the environment in which it resides utilizing technology and skills that it has acquired over time through a process of trial and error.

You can’t put a bunch of elements into a burning couldron, wait a few million or billion years, and end up with a Porshe. In exactly the same way, you can’t put a bunch of chemicals into a pot, wait a few million or billion years, and end up with a human being.

Again, more crap: the Porsche is the result of numerous technological leaps made by Man’s ingenuity – mining, the smelting of ores into metal, the discovery of oil for light and heat, the invention of the steam engine, the discovery of the distillation process, the discovery of electro-magnetic forces. The raw materials were there as a result of the previously mentioned accretion of neutrons, electrons and protons to create a variety of elements, which were then either used in their near pure state (e.g. malachite into copper ore) or combined to create more complex man-made materials.

Man is partially the result of external events – not least of which was a large ball of rock smashing into the Gulf of Mexico around 60 million years ago without which mammals would never have progressed beyond the shrew and the dominant species on the planet would be some form of evolved lizard.

If the rock would have gone straight into the Gulf at a perpendicular angle, it probably wouldn’t have been an extinction event and if the rock would have coincided with Earth at another point on the mantle, the resulting “nuclear winter” wouldn’t have been as bad because of the precise elemental make-up at the impact point.

  12. MacLibertarian,

You are wrong about socialism. Socialism is the natural state of society.

Unless you are advocating anarchism (your name suggests otherwise) you believe that people should be organized into a society. And in this very belief you are advocating socialism.

Think about it logically for a minute. Society exists expressly to prevent darwinism. Consider : If I were the biggest baddest guy in town, I could rob and rape and kill, and no single person could stop me – thats darwinism. But, when 3-4 townspeople band together to stop me, and are protecting the “weak” from the “strong” – that is socialism. They are using their combined strength to benefit everyone.

Take that idea and consider our society. We have laws and police and they prevent physical darwinism from occuring. Make no mistake, this IS socialism. The problem with our society is that our socialism is unbalanced – we protect people from physical darwinism, but not economic darwinism. This allows a few people to soak up all the money and all the land and all the resources until there is nothing left for the rest of society. This is fundamentally unbalanced and doomed to failure, because when there is nothing left for the rest of society, society will break down so goes its protection against physical darwinism. And what do you think will then happen to those who profited so well through economic darwinism under the protection of the society?

  13. MacJack & Spark:

Yep, and I can find “scientists” who are willing to go on record and state that global warming is a myth and that there is no proven link between smoking and cardio-vascular illnesses.

Just because someone graduates from MIT doesn’t make them infallible, any more than just because I passed my driving test in 1989 means that I’m still a good driver in 2005.

As for the statistical probability of DNA/RNA occurring by chance: you must be joking. Have you ever heard the expression that “in an infinite universe, everything is possible”. DNA per se is not actually complex, it’s simply four base proteins. “Ah”, you say, “but guanine, adenine, etc are complex entities in and of themselves”.

This is true, but we have no idea whether life originally tried to blueprint itself using other proteins derived from other amino acids and whether those attempts failed or to what extent they succeeded before the ultimately dominant DNA/RNA system we know and love appeared.

All we really know is that, at some point, a successful mechanism for defining life as a self-replicating single-cell organism was arrived at by chance, and that those single-cell organisms evolved in a highly diversified manner to exploit every niche and environment on the planet.

The FSM was a new one to me and a great read. Very funny. A great improvement over the Invisible Pink Unicorn. [Please note the sarcasm is my next statement, even though it is true.] Unfortunately, worship of either of these would be breaking at least one of the first two commandments.

    Science–

Do you really think current translations of the Scriptures are based on translations of the originals? The finding of the Dead Sea scrolls was a great encouragement to translators because they were 1000 years older than any other copies we had and they were near identical to what we had been using. The few differences were only in changes in spellings of words or in style.

What I meant by “systems designed for specific purposes” was things like: blood clotting, digestion, replication, sight, touch, pollination, the hydrologic cycle. These things could not have been arranged accidentally. They must have been designed.

Anybody can look at a Porsche and see that it was designed. Somebody thought of it and figured out a way to build it. Anybody should be able to look at a bacterial flagellum, let alone the whole bacteria, and see that it was designed. Somebody thought of that flagellum and figured out a way to build it using over 50 proteins which could never have arranged themselves randomly, no matter how long you waited.

  15. “Statisticians have ruled out the plausibility or the possibility of these extremely complex molecules, and there attending interaction, merely happening by “chance”.”

“”Chance” simply does not allow for it. READ and become enlightened. There are many such FACTS that are simply not explained by Evolution alone.”

    spark,

    that’s crap right there buddy.
the fact is there is still A LOT about biology that hasn’t been figured out yet. for a bio major you’re the one that needs the more open mind. Atleast with biology there’s more to learn. with ID, its just a euphemism of sorts for creationism. you say to read more. All the books in the world can’t create a convincing argument for a creator. The evidence just isnt there. AND it never will be.

  16. just out of curiousity,

i cant remember where i’ve seen this but a man came up with a mathematical algorithm that randomly created shapes based on a certian set of rules.

many of these shapes amazingly came out shaped like tree leaves, snowflakes, and other natural occurances.

if a math equation can do this based on certain conditions, why can a bunch of proteins and amino acids do the same thing? the environment would of course choose the variables creating life that was suited for it.

  17. johnny–

“a man came up with a mathematical algorithm that randomly created shapes based on a certain set of rules”

Well, God came up with the “certain set of rules”. He wrote millions of applications using DNA and then He ran them.

  18. God’s plan? Huh?!

The U.S. Census Bureau reported that hunger is a daily concern for 13.8% of Americans.

There will be 125 million births in the world this year. By the time this group is ready to start school, there will have been another 625 million births.

Every 20 minutes, the human population grows by about 3,000. At the same time another plant or animal becomes extinct (27,000 each year).

According to the U.N., if fertility were to stay constant at 1995-2000 levels, the world population would soar to 244 billion by 2150 and 134 trillion by 2300.

The population of the U.S. tripled during the 20th century, but the U.S. consumption of raw materials increased 17-fold.

One tenth of all the people who have ever lived are alive today.

The richest 20 percent of humanity consumes 86 percent of all goods and services, while the poorest fifth consumes just 1.3 percent.

There has been more growth in population since 1950 than during the 4 million years since our early ancestors first stood upright.

Only 11% of the world’s soils can be farmed without being irrigated, drained, or otherwise improved.

Current extinction rates are at least 100 to 1,000 times higher than natural rates found in the fossil record.

Every year, between 17,000 and 100,000 species vanish from our planet.

…and Bush wants to cut down more forests to find more oil to make more greenhouse gasses.

  19. I recommend the writings of Richard Dawkins for a thorough and devastating debunking of Intelligent Design arguments. Especially “The Blind Watchmaker: Why the Evidence of Evolution Reveals a Universe Without Design” and “A Devil’s Chaplain: Reflections on Hope, Lies, Science, and Love”.
